n ft' If OHll, B. JOltES, Editor PrprlMr XmSKD AT m POBT-OmCl AT CHAXLOm, H. a. A SBOOro-CLABB MATTMLl WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1881. Referring to the editorial in yester day's Observer in regard to the-at-tempted'assassinatlon of the President, vre spoke only our individual sentiments and made no pretense to represent those of the community. . - The narrow gauge railroad is popular in .Texas. The 'fence" or "no fence" fight has been inaugurated in Georgia. The Lesseps isthmus canal does not seem to be making much progress. Within the past forty years the popu lation of Ireland has decreased S.OOO, 000. It is estimated that the wheat crop of Ohio this year will amount to 44,000,000 bushels, -.i.,..- The Sewanee coal mines in Grundy county, Tennessee, have been sold for 8525,000. Throughout her trials Mrs. Garfield has conducted herself with remarkable fortitude. The iron industry in England is de pressed. Only 556 out of 967 furnaces are in operation. Prof. Proctor says the comet will de stroy the earth, perhaps in about a mil lion of years. Well, who cares ? Ex-Governor Bishop of Ohio says he will never be a candidate again. One term was enough for him. When Arthur heard of the shooting of the President, lie said he "felt ex ceedingly sorry for Mrs. Garfield." IX If the President lives he will have learned the sentiments of the American people on the subject of assassination. Prof. Draper has succeeded in secur ing a very good photograph of the comet, the first successful effort ever made. V. P. Arthur is in Washington, but Mr. Garfield's good constitution and the doctors may prevent him from becom ing President. Jay Gould has purchased the St Louis bridge and now can dictate terms to rival railways running that way till an other bridge is built. The Irish Land Leagues of this coun try have nearly all passed resolutions condemning the attempted assassina tion of President Garfield. Guiteau has become suddenly fa mous, and his fame will reach the cul minating point when the hangman ad justs the noose and he swings from a rope into eternity. The net earnings of the Kentucky and Louisiana lotteries amount to about $1,000,000 a year, contributed by gulls who are hunting for a fortune at so much a chance. Ben Butler says that Conkling will shortly initiate a political movement that will throw all other political revo lutions in the shade. Conkling always "going to do" something wonderful. .,, , Conkling was among the few men in the Republic who did not express his regrets at the assassination of the Pre sident. But perhaps remembering the story of G. W's little hatchet "he couldn't tell a lie." The father of Christmas, who a short while ago killed his step-brother in Washington was hanged for murder. lie had a brother also who was tried for murder and acquitted. It is said that he is a harmless man and not apt to take life without provocation.. There is an invalid woman in Chica go who has neither eaten nor drunk anything for eight months. Life has been sustained by baths , of beef tea, milk and such highly nutritious liquids, with an occasional bath of alcohol to keep the pores open. She has lived for the past eight months in this way, not a morsel of food having passed her lips. Her weight has been reduced from 180 to less than 80. The report of the Mexican Railroad Company, which owns the line running between Vera Cruz and the city of Mexico, shows how the trade and com merce of that country are developing. For the last half of 1880, the business of this road was $1,970,720, as against $l,799,S7lf daring the first half of the year. During the first quarter of 1881, the business was $1,777,000, or nearly as much as for the previous six months. THE FOURTH IN GUILFORD. The people of Greensboro celebrated the Fourth in good style. A very hand some flag was presented to the Guil ford Grays by the ladies, the presenta tion address being made by Miss Nellie Dixon, responded to by Captain Elling ton. The declaration of independence was read by Mr. Foard, which was fol lowed by the oration delivered by Mr. J. M. Leach, Jr. of Lexington, who de livered a remarkably fine address. He is a speaker of far more than ordinary excellence, possessed of a good delivery, full, flexible voice, graceful jestures, self-confidence, and a splendid com mand of language. The meeting was elosed by the adoption of resolutions presented by Judge Gilmer expressing the horror of the people at the attempt ed assassination of the President In the evening .the young folks had a lawn party In ithe grove where the celebra tion took place in the day time, and ; concluded ,the festivities with a sc alable at the McAdoo House. At High Point there was a prohibi tion 4th of July celebrationi where it ls Baid there were about ib,ooTpT6ple& aemtted. Addresses were delivered, fey , Judge Merrlmon, W. 8. Ball, Rev. J. C--Price, Colored, and Denson. of Indiana. ALBANY. Tbe Content Drags lta Slow Length Along. Albany, July 5. Ga., Saturday morning, July 2, Mrs. Ophelia Nlsbet Saulsbary. - This sad event oc curred after a week ef unconsciousness, fronv which the deceased never rallied. The skill of physicians and the devotion of friends and rela tives were of no avail to restrain the gentle spirit within the casket Calmly and without a straggle It winged Its way to destiny and God's changeless country. The deceased was one of our city's Jewels, as fair in face and as beautiful In form as she was gentle In spirit None knew her but to love her. A tender wife, faithful daughter and firm friend, she made for herself a home In the affections of all, and left a spotless memory.
