THE CENTENNIAL, CIIOUU1. riie Original Ode by Paul II. Haync and Prayer by Charles Poindexter to be Sung at York f ou n Prof eor Siegel Earnestly Practicing the Chorus. Richmond Dispatch. Frofessor Seigel is earnestly at work organinizing and drilling the chorus for the centennial. Having divided the city in three sections, he had now, with the additions hist niffht, about 275 names of singers enrolled. The rehear sal at Sanger Halle last evening was a successful opening, there being about eighty voices in the diffeient parts re presented. The prayer, which has just heen written by Mr. Charles Poindex ter, of this city," has been set to the mu sic of an Aye'Maria by J. E. Schmoel z;rr, arranged by Professor Siegel. The prayer as it stands is a highly credit able production, the solemn character of the music adequately breathing the lolty sentiments oi the poem. 1 ne rol- low ing is the text of THE PILAYKU. Our futhtrs' God. who-ou thes piaini ur oid tcave ViCt'iy to our ia d, E' 'ii now in gracious favor d ins To bless the labor ot our hand. To Him let us our strain upra'se In solemn notes of prayer aDd praise Our grateful homage gladly pay. 'Twas faith In him that nerved their Leart And gave the vlct'ry to their hands. He did the wisdom high Impart That baffled all the foeman's plans; And gave our lands, In days of yore, Deliverance strong from trouble sore, Ui Utter suite and ieariul war. Built on foundation strong and deep The starry-pointing shaft we rear, The mem'ry of brave deeds to keep, And tell to every coming year. Po let us In our hearts upraise The monument of those brave days Of faith and glorious victory. The ode by Mr. Paul Hayne, of Geor gia, which has been set to music by Professor Mosenthal, of Philadelphia, has been received, and the parts will soon be lithographed for rehearsal. The music, though well made, does not seem at first blush calculated to arouse any enthusiasm. The following is the full text of THE CENTENNIAL ODE. Hark! hark! down the century's long reaching sloDe. To those transports of triumph those raptures of hope! The voices of Main and of Mountain combined, In glad resonance borne on the wings of the wind; The bass or tne arum, ana tne trumpet mat tnrii. s Through the multiplied echoes of jubilant hills! Holt at Haw River are being made and also altera tions in the building already in use, the combined efect3 of whicjh will be to mako it one of the largest and most capacious in the State. A new building of brick 48x50 is already under construction con necting two factory buildings now in use, together with an addition of 50 feet to one of these, which will give a total frontage of 150 feet. An addi tional story wilL be added to the two original buildings, which will make the whole a structure of four stories. A tower is to be erected on the new addi tion improving the arthitectural effect. This is another proof of the profit of cotton factories in North Carolina. There would be no additional money sunk in unprofitable Investments. A Down Town Merchant, Having passed several sleepless nights, disturb ed by the agonies and orles of a suffering child, and becoming convinced that Mrs. Wlnslow's Soothing Syrup was just the article needed, pro cured a supply for the child. On reaching home and acquainting his wife with what he had done, she refused to have it administered to the child, as she was strongly In favor of Homoeopathy. That night the child passed in suffering, and. the parents without sleep. Returning home the day following, the father found the baby still worse; and while contemplating another sleepless night, the mother stepped from the room to attend to some domestic duties, and left the father with the child During her absence he administered a por tion of the Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing That night all hands slept well, and the little fellow awofee in the morning bright and hap- m mother was delighted, with the sudden and wonderful change, and although at Bret offend ed at the deception practiced upon her, has con tinued to use the Syrup.and suffering crying babies and restless nights have disappeared, A single trial of the Syrup never yet failed to relieve the hahv and overcome the prejudices of the mother.
