The front or tne central is, the rendezvous and club; room of nearly all the young men uu a large pare or tneoia enes or the town. Young people must be enter tained somewhere, and the stranger in our midst, too, finds time hanging uevy on ms nan as. ml pUDHC liorary lorone thing would attract a great many, so why not establish a public library? The zealous advocates of re form will find that thev can do much in that direction even ix prohibi tion is defeated. - Another excellent plan for the sequestration of young people from bar room mnuences would be the forma tion of social clubs which, exist in al most every town the size of Charlotte in the country. There is nothing of the kind here unless it is the dancine clubs. But dancing is their sole object. or any further social diversions one has to go elsewhere. There is nothing which gives so powerful an: incentive to-correct behavior as the fear of con demnation by social organizations Of this kind. The tone of societies is al ways higher than of the individual left to btmself and there can be little doubt that the present degeneracy of bon camaraderie into indiscriminate association without reference to social or moral qualifications could in no way be so effectually counteracted as by select social clubs. Whercfere n Cnaasje 1 y . - What a change in Charlotte! From a prohibition majority of nearly 200 in May to an anti-prohibition majority of ooo in August I There is a lesson in this change that is worth remember ing. Wilmington Star. The prohibition majority in Charlotte in May was only 25, as ascertained by the vote for mayor, and only included those who live within the corporation proper. The vote cast in Charlotte last Thursday included all who resided in the township, which takes in an area of some sixteen square miles outside of the city, including two or three Repub lican suburbs. But we cannot deny that there has been some change in public sentiment on this question. The city voted "dry" in May, but there was a tie in the board of aldermen. In order to make assurance doubly sure, the old board of aldermen were called together and passed what is known as the prohibi tion ordinances which at one fell blow crushed out every man who had any money invested in the buying and sell ing wines or beer, and since that time the question of enforcing the ordi nances has been toyed with like a kit ten would do with a ball of yarn. Pub lic sympathy was first created toward the men who were crushed out of busi ness without warning, and after a short tut the attempt to enforce the prohibi tion ordinances was abandoned, and an appeal made to enforce the law, which required liquor dealers to pro cure a license from the county commis sioners a law which had been held in abeyance for at least twelve years. All this weakened the cause of the prohibi tionists, and beside this there were not a few who voted for prohibition in the city, who were not willing to see the law enforced throughout the State, or even the county. We might say further that in the citv election in Mav. the Question was pure and simple : "Shall the bar-rooms be closed." and each man voted his sentiments, from his own standpoint, In the State election the action of the Republican executive committee solidified the Republican vote against prohibition, while the Democrats were divided, not considering it' a party question. The alder men rererrea to above were elected up on this understanding. Thev nave ac cepted their offices upon: this platform, and it any one of them now proposes to be false to his trust to fonret his manhood and his oath let it be known, and known at once. Charlotte township and the citv of Charlotte are distinct and separate, and the will of the majority of the citizens oi unariotte, as expressed in May last, did not bind this township outside the corporate limits of Charlotte; so nei ther does the vote of the township out side effect or bind this city. In May, 1883, the voters of Charlotte can decide whether or not they will continue to prohibit the sale of - liauors. but until then theTe can be no such decision. The mayor and six aldermen were elected upon the prohibition platform; they ac cepted their nominations, and in doing so bound themselves to that platform.
