NEW YORK POLITICS.
For years the politics of New York
has been notoriously corrupt, the pat
ronage and plunder of that rich and
populous State being so great as to
tempt the cupidity of office-seekers and
cause wide-spread demoralization
amongst them. The bosses , have run
the machine and had their little armies
of retainers at their heels, who did the
dirty work and took their pay in spoils
distributed. The voters have been
bought and sold by their bosses on both
sides with'as. much business delibera
tion and calculation as if they were dis
posing of so many live stock in market.
John Kelly has been playing the role of
"boss" to Tammany Hall for several
years, and has power enough, with the
following he controls, to decide the re
sult of any election. Knowing this he
makes his demands and if they are not
complied with he declares war and en
ters the field for vengeance and spoils,
This defection has cost the Democrats
the State twice if not oftener, and
given it to the Republicans. That he
entered into a corrupt bargain with the
Republican managers in the last Presr
dential electioh, by which he gave them
New York, we have not the slightest
doubt, and our belief is confirmed by
the following statement from Col. Bliss
who don't seem to be any better, how
ever, than Boss Kelly, in which he tells
how the bosses bortered :
"In the year that Cornell was running
for Governor, the Tammany Boss, of
of course, did not care anything for
Kobinson or the rest of the State ticket,
and we both agreed to trade votes in
the city. He was to give 3,000 votes to
Hamilton Ward and James W Wads
worth, and we were.to deliver ; 8,000
votes to Gumbleton, the nominee of
Tammany for a local office, county
clerk. I think. This deal, however, was
of a kind where the republicans gained
what they wanted and Tammany did
not. We tried to deliver the votes to
Gumbleton, but we couldn't possibly do
it."
Kelly is determined to rule or ruin
the Democratic party in that State, and
that is what he has been doing for years
past, since he locked horns with Robin
son and Tilden. His defection elected
Cornell, and gave the State to the Rs
publicans at the last presidential elec
tion. The Democracy cannot count
with anything like reasonable hope on
success, while such a venal trickster re
main3 in the patty to betray it. The
sooner they send him adrift ane take
their chances in the field with him
square against them the better their
chances of success. As an open enemy
he is less dangerous and less to be dread'
ed than as a pretended friend, ever im
perious in his demands, and ever ready
to betray. He is in Albany now with
his strikers demanding admission into
the convention and threatening to bolt
if admission be refused. Bolt is his
game, and by bolting he plays into the
hands of the Republicans, and draws
votes enough from the Democratic tick
et.to insure Republican triumphs. As
an ally or the KepuDlicans he is a suc
cess. As a DeSoerat he is an arrant
fraud.

It draws rather an ncriv tiir.tnrA of t.h

quote briefly from its leader of last

abuses which exist: "Like a huge devil

graauaiiy drawing this town into their
deadly embrace and choking out the
healthy temperance and moral status

be perfectly indifferent to the loath

The editor of the Philadelphia Record
does not seem to be a very ardent ad
mirer of Col. McClure, of the Times, if
we may judge from such complimen
tary allusions as the following :
"The reason that the prognostications
of A. K. McClure with reference to the
course of President Arthur all fall
wide of the mark is because the latter
is a man of integrity and a gentleman.
It is a good rule to set a thief to catch a
thief; but it is a poor plan to set a thief
to catch an honest man. The way of
honesty and truthfulness is a perpetual
pitfall for rogues."
There i3 but little doubt, says the
Philadelphia Record, whenever the
probe is pushed deep enough, ulcers
will be found in the Pension Office ana
in the Treasury Department which will
make the Post Office exposures very
tame by comparison. Day by day the
rottenness of the Hayes administration
grows more apparent. There is danger
to Republican institutions in the con
current existence of a full treasury and
a foul administration.

Proceedings ia the Senate New Sena-

Washington, October 11. Senate.
Immediately after the reading of the
journal, Edmunds, rising to the ques
tion or nignest privilege, moved tnac
the oath of office be administered to
Nelson W. Aldrich, Senator elect from
the State of Rhode Island.
There being no omection, the motion
was agreed to and Aldrich was sworn
in.
Edmunds then made a similar mo
tion in cases of Senators elect from
New York.
McPherson interposed and stated that
he desired to present a petition pending
that motion. He held in his nanus a
communication from certain members
of the New York Legislature, alleging
' i -m r x
certain reasons wny messrs. xjapuaw
and Miller were not entitled to seats in
the Senate. With regard to those alle
gations he knew nothing. He did not
present the petition with any desire to
delay action upon the administration
of the oath. He offered the petition
and would refer it at the proper time to
the appropriate committee.
Edmunds said that as tne petition re
ferred to the propriety of swearing in
the new Senators from New York he
would not object to its reception at the
present time.
The petition was received and laid
upon the table and the oath of office
administered to the Senators from New
York,
A committee, consisting of Pendleton
and Anthony, was appointed by the
presiding officer to wait upon the Presi
dent and inform him that the Senate
was ready to receive any communica
tion he might be pleased to send .them.
Then at 12:15 p. m., the Senate took
a recess tor nail an hour.
After recess, Edmunds offered a res
olution declaring that the standing
committees of the Senate, as they were
constituted at the close of the last ses
sion of the Senate, be continued for the
present session, and authorizing the
president pro tern to fill any vacancies
which exist therein.
Harris asked that resolution lie over
for one day under the rules. It was so
ordered.
The committee appointed to wait up
on the President reported that it had
performed that duty, and that the Pres
ident had stated that he would comma
nicate in writing with the Senate to
morrow.
The Senate then at 12:50 adjourned
until to-morrow.

Wbsvt Can be Done in Florida.
The Palatka (Fla.) Journal says:
"Several years ago Mr. Collins, -who
lives just over the southern line of this
county in Marion, came to Florida to
better his pecuniary condition. He was
poor. Me lived in tne most economical
way because he had to. it is said that
his diet for years was cat-fish, hominy,
and such things as he raised on his land.
He was too poor to buy the trees, and
begged the seed whenever he was ia
company with any one eating oranges.
These seed, thus obtained, are the
foundation of his grove. He gave his
grove constant and careful attention,
cultivating between the rows with cot
ton each year, .by f rtilizing his cotton
he gave food to his trees. His grove is
now one of the best in "Florida. Mr.
Young, orange packer, of this city, has
offered to buy and pay for 100,000
oranges on 100 of Mr. Collins's trees this
season. Mr. C. declines, because there
are more than that number of oranges
on the trees. The property of Mr. Col

worth more than $30,000."

diseases, and is attended with more or less nerv
ous irritation. Sciatica is also a form of neural
gla, and all painful nervous diseases come under
that name. Neuralgia means nerve ache, and
therefore you can suffer with neuralgia in any part
of the body, as the nerves are supplied to every
part
"I have for many years closely studied the cause
of neuralgia, and the nature of the nervous sys
tem, with the many diseases that It is subject to,
and have found by actual experience that the true
and primary cause of neuralgia is poverty of the
nervous nuia n Deoomes impoverisnea ana poor,
and In some cases starved, not because the Da-
tlent does not eat, but because what Is eaten is
not appropriated to the nervous system. There
are many causes for this, but Dr. C. W. Benson's
Celery and Chamomile Pills have in my hands
proved a perfect remedy for this condition and
these diseases."
