The efforts of the Chinese authorities to suppress piracy off the southeastern coast has been rewarded with conspicu ous success. Gunboats in September had an engagement with them, in which two hundred pirates were either slain outrieht or forced to drown themselves. Nine others were taken alive, and about seventy escaped in safety. Eleven boats were captured. One cause of this success was the fact that the pirates were badly armed. They had in all scarcely a hundred muskets, while their enemies were well supplied witn rines. In high latitudes, it has been disco v ered that whiskey drinking conduces to positive frenzy and turns otherwise in offensive men into aeviis. Toe, "cow bovs." when sober are gentle, hospitable and kind-hearted. When drunk, no de mons in the lower pit are more frantic, bloodthirsty and cruel. Temperance missionaries have a fine field in that direction. On Wednesday a little son of Mr. Wm Misenheimer, aged 4 years, was found in the well by its mother. The well was about 40 feet deep, with about three and a half feet of water in it. The lit tle fellow was clinging to the rock wall to keep from drowning, and crying for help. His mother let the bucket down to him, and the child got in it, and .was drawn but' by its father, who had arriv ed on the scene. The child . was not much hurt, only a slight cut about the, back of the head. The well has a curb about it thirty inches high, with a bole for the bucket' to pass through. As soon as the child was drawn out he Sinted to a negro wench that was in r. Misenheimer's employ, and said to his mother, tier threw me down the well s It was a very singular circum stance. The average St. Louisian strongly ob jects to this system. It is too much trouble for him to struggle through a crowded car to the door, and there wait; for change: and ne consequently refu ses to do so.
