A Dowi Tom Merchant, Having passed several sleepless nights, disturb ed by the agonies and cries of a suffering child, and becoming convinced that Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup was Just the article needed, pro cured a supply for the child. On reaching home and acquainting his wife with what he had done, she refused to have It administered to the child, as she was strongly in favor of Homoeopathy. That night the child passed In suffering, and the parents without sleep. Returning home the day following, the father found the oaby still worse; and while contemplating another sleepless night, the mother stepped from the room to attend to some domestic duties, and left the father with the cblld. During her absence he administered a por tion of the Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing. That nlgbt all bands slept well, and the little fellow awoke in the morning bright and hap py. The mother was delighted with the sudden and wonderful change, and although at first offend ed at the deception practiced upon her, has con tinued to use the Syrup.and Suffering crying babies and restless nights have disappeared. A single trial of the Syrup never yet failed to relieve the baby, and overcome the prejudices of the mother. Sold by all Druggists. 25 cents a bottle. C5T The look of utter despair which ii ' wie nervous man assumes on the ap proach of the small boy with his horn is pltiahle to behold, but there is no re lief inside the corporation. tST" A momentary excitement was created on the square yesterday by a loose horse in foil harness making a run rrom a point on West Trade street up to tbe square, where his career was cut short by his falling. Though a large crowa was on the street at the time, no one was injured. tyThey do say that one of the policemen did such noble service at the supper spread the other night by Mrs. DeWolfe as to utterly prostrate him. There is a difference of opinion as to whether it was turkey and cranberries, or his arduous street duties during the day that did it tW Testerday was reported by the police to be exceedingly orderly, con sidering the season and the fact that so many people were on the streets. Considerable latitude is generally given on such occasions as the present, but flagrant offenders will be dealt with in the usual manner. Chicken Thief Killed. Friday night Capt. J. R. Erwin, our superior court clerk, had his slumbers disturbed by a racket among his chick ens, and hastily making his way to the poultry house, proceeded to investigate the trouble. A light was brought to bear on the surroundings, and the would-be thief found within the enclos ure. Without ordering him out or ask ing his business the Captain drew his hip pocket attachment and shot the in truder dead in his tracks. He says be will make affidavit that it was the big gest 'possum he ever saw in his life. Perhouni Difficulty. The tombstone war may be said to be fairly open. A four-cornered personal difficulty occurred on the street last night, in which Messrs. J as. A. John ston and Wm. Miller on one side, and Messrs. W. O. Berryhill and Smith, on the other, participated. It is said by those who witnessed the affair that Smith attacked Johnston, which finally drew Berryhill and Miller into the dif ficulty. The damage done was slight but it Is a matter of regret that men who are regarded as peaceable citizena shouldbecome involved in such difficul ties. Pertoual, Messrs. Jno. L. Miller and Law rence Biatton came up from Atlanta yesterday and will spend the holidays m the city. Rev. A. D. Hepburn, president of Davidson College, was in the city yes day. Rev. W. S. Hales is in the city visit ing relatives. Mr. S. E. Allen, a prominent hard ware merchant of Winston, N. C, was in the city yesterday. Mrs. Sturdivant has returned to his city after a prolonged visit to friends in Anson and Richmond coun- ies. A Word for Our Carrier. The time has arrived when the car rier boys to The Observer,&s has long been a custom, will wait upon our pa- rons with a handsome Christmas ad dress, for which they will be pleased to receive any sum which may be bestow ed by thos9 whom they have served during the year now drawing to a close. While we have no doubt that there have been many just causes of com plaint against them for shortcomings, he task performed by them each day is one of no small consequence, for it is their duty to go in rain and sunshine, through hot and cold, day after day. We ask kindly consideration for them at the hands of those whom they have served, and give the assurance that favors will stimulate to greater efforts to faithful service in tbe future. Stonewall' Daughter. The Atlanta Constitution of a recent date, in speaking of the reception ten dered Miss Julia Jackson in that city a few nights since, says the most signifi cant feature of the occasion "was the fact that not a State in the Union was unrepresented among those who came freely to offer t,p, he. r their tributes of esteem and reverence xor tne vaior ana memory of her illustrious father. This record was kept by Maj. R. A. Bacon, whose devotion to her father is only eaualled by hia desire to make the so journ of the daughter pleasant in our midst. Miss Jackson was, of course, the cynosure of all eyes and was the re cipient of many compliments. She is a most charming young laay ana truly the daughter of the South. Real? atlon mt Dr. WlUfleld. Dr. Whitfield has resigned the care of the Baptist church in Charlotte and will close his pastorate witn tnis morn ing's services. He has been here over seven years. The increased innuence and improved condition of tnat cnurcn, under his ministry, has been apparent to all the community. A gold medal has been awarded the Van Winkle cotton gin at the Atlanta Exposition, and everybody will know just what that signifies. Mr. J. The presentation was made yesterday evening, and the pres ent was much appreciated by the re ceiver, who was taken very much by surprise. Mr. Leon has been alresident of this city for a number of years, and has by his gentlemanly deportment, and his excellent business qualifications won and retained many friends among our people, who regret that he has decided to emigrate to New Mexico. The Ob server extends him its heartiest wish es for success in his new home, satisfied that if he should ever return, our peo ple would give him a kind reception. w Correction In Regard to ' lion D. A. Jenkins. The report that the Hon.D. A, Jenkins, ex-treasurer of North Carolina, had been fleeced by confidence men in Washington city, and published in the Observer day before yesterday, struck this community with surprise. Mr Jenkins has always maintained an un sullied character among the people of this section, where he lives, and the idea that he should enter a gambler's den to take his chances was a matter of very great surprise to those who knew him best. As we had hoped, a telegram from Raleigh yesterday communicating the substance of a telegram from Mr. Jenkins himself, who is in New York, puts a very different aspect on the whole affair. An attempt was made to entrap him by a shrewd sharpes and a confidence man, to whom Mr. Jenkins gave certain checks, as he supposed for a consideration, no playing cards being used. All the checks have been sur rendered, and Mr. Jenkins is now in New York in hot pursuit of the parties, with a fair chance of bringing them to justice. We hope in a few days to pub lish a full statement of the whole affair over lis own signature, as it gives us pleasure to do justice to any man. Holiday Note. As Christmas falls on Sunday this year, Monday is legally a holiday, and our merchants and other business men will no doubt generally suspend to morrow in order to give their employes a day out of business. The cotton buyers will handle no cotton to-morrow. At the postoffice to-morrow will be observed Sunday hours, as will also be the case on the 2nd of January. The civil offices at the court-house will be closed to-morrow, with perhaps one or two exceptions. Oates Bros. & Co. will suspend operations at their factory to-morrow to allow the employes the enjoyment of a holiday. -The various banks will also be closed, and all paper falling due to morrow will be payable on Tuesday. -The railroad authorities of Char lotte being desirous to give their em ployes to-morrow as a holiday, no freights will be received nor delivered on that day by the agents of the Rich mond & Danville, Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta, and Carolina Central rail roads. All freight trains on the Char lotte, Columbia & Augusta and Rich mond & Danville lines will be discon tinued for that day. The agents, how ever, will be at the depots, at 9 o'clock a. m., to deliver any perishable freight received on that morning. -On to-morrow, as also on the 2nd of January, the Western Union telegraph office in this city will observe the holi day hours, working from 8 to 10 a. m. and from 4 to 6 p. m. on each day. Charcliea and Sunday School. Rev. J. T. Bagwell will preach at Tryon Street Methodist Church this morning at 11 o'clock. Subject: "Song of the Angels." Luke 2:13, 14. Rev. W. S. Dr, Whitfield's connection with the Baptist Church closes with his sermon to day- The holy communien will be ad ministered at St. Peter's Episcopal Church to-day. The church has been tastefully and appropriately decorated by the ladies the congregation, and presents a most pleasing appearance. Rev. Mr. Wheeler, the new pastor of Calvary Church, has no,t yet arrived in the city. At Tryon Street Methodist Church special Christmas services will be had this afternoon at 3 o'clock, to which the publio is cordially invited. Appro priate decorations have been made for the occasion. The Sunday School of Calvary Church yesterday sent a handsome gold headed cane to their former- pastor, who is now stationed at Reidsville, as a Christmas present. On the cane was inscribed: "Presented to Rev. J. E,. Thompson by Canary Sunday School."1 VThere will be no services at tne Lutheran Church to-day. Special Christmas exercises will be had at tbe Second Presbyterian Church at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Calvary Sunday School will have its Christmas tree Wednesday night in stead of Monday night, as heretofore Announced. The ladies of Rev. Of Warde as an actor the Louisville Courier-Journal, one of the very best authorities of the Southwest, sav: "He has for some years been recog nized as one of the most sterling actors, a valuable gift to the American boards rrom tne jngnsn stage upon wmcn he received his early training. Even those who had admired him most in the lead ing parts of comedy and melodrama, were scarcely prepared for so finished and powerful a delineation of one of tne greatest roles of tragedy as tnat he achieved last evening. Mr. Warde's "Shylock' was one of the most forcible and striking perfomances that has been witnessed in Louisville for a long time. The character is one which is es sayed only by the most vigorous type of actors, and makes heavy demands, not only upon the art, but on the physical endowments of the player. In all these Mr. Warde met every requirement and portrayed all the wearing passion with a power that steadily increased, and yet which left that best impression of a force still reserved and not required. He bore the weight of the role admira bly. In all tbat he does there is the suggestion of the vigorous and robust mind in conception, and in execution the genius of the sterling actor, as dis tinguished from the nicety of'the artist which he has displayed so excellently in less exacting characters. His voice rich.musical and strong is used with the utmost skill of intonation, and nev er once fell into the rant, which is the bane of tragedy. The lowest whisper and strongest tones were natural, and the suggestion of declamation was but slight, even in the scenes where the words of the author call a halt. musical Eutertalnment at Thomas Title. To the Editor of The Observer. The annual winter entertainment of the Thomasville Female College was held Friday evening in the college chapel. The exercises were conducted under the leadership of Miss Brewster and Mrs. Schooler, music teachers of the institution. These entertainments are given semi annually, not only as a pleasant and profitable pastime to the friends of the school, but also as a public test of the preceding term's work-. The programme of last evening con sisted of instrumental and vocal solos. duetts, overtures, two pianos and or gan, ending with the carol, "Ring Christmas Bells," by the vocal class. The young ladies acquitted themselves creditably and received the congratula tions and applause of the audience. .f rof. Item hart aims to give not only a full literary course to the young ladies who attend his institution, but also ample scope to develop their pow ers in the fine arts. -There has been made, within the past two years, an ad dition, 70x40 feet, which contains a beautiful chapel, 19 feet pitch, possess ing fine acoustic properties, with dor mitories above and recitation and din ing rooms below. This makes a fine front of 140 feet facing the railroad. The buildings, grounds and facilities are all that could be desired for a first- class school. s. n. T. Thomasville, N. C, Dec. 24. A CARD.
