An officer gives the information that
an arrest was made at the time of the
disturbance, and the matter is still open
for investigation.

reached this office on account of our
city subscribers not getting their pa
pers early in the morning. We try to
have The Observer delivered early
in all parts of the city, but the rainy
weather for the past month has necessi
tated the putting of the papers in the
houses instead of merely throwing
them in the yards, and this adds much
to the time required to make the
rounds.
Reported ITIivking.
A report was current in the city yes
terday that Mr. Jonathan Ray, of Provi
dence township, is missing, tnd that
his whereabouts is unknown. It is said
he was absent from home last Monday,
and that his horse, with saddle torn, re
turned home that evening riderless. It
is to be hoped that he will turn up al
right, as apart from his drinking pro
pensities he is well liked by his neigh
bors and friends.
Supervisor' Meeting1,
The road supervisors held a meeting
yesterday afternoon, but transacted no
business of public importance, except
the appointing of several overseers to
fill vacancies. The appointments
made were as follows:
For district No 1, Jas. Ludlum ; dis
trict No. 3, Watkins ; district No. 4,
A. A. Atwell ; district No. 5, Jasper Al
exander; district No. 7, M. M. Wolf;
district No. 9, Henry Duckworth.

Last Thursday night Mr. P. T. Free
land, living seven miles north of Char
lotte, had a horse stolen from him, and
on the same night a brother of his had
$300 in cash stolen from a trunk in his
house, and if reports be true it is likely
the theft was committed by McManus,
the young white man who escaped
from Mecklenburg tail a few weeks
ago. A colored man who knew McMa
nus says positively that he saw him in
the neigborhood last week.
A reward is offered for the recovery
of the stolen property, or the arrest of
the thief.

Va., for the practice of his profession.

him a like success in his new field of operations.

terest in the drug store of Wriston &

young gentlemen of. this city, who also

The above is the tille of a sixteen
page quarto semi-monthly lately start
ed at Atlanta, Ga., the 7th number of
which has reached this office. The
publication is devoted to home indus
tries, is edited by Mr. W. G. Whidby,
and is in every respect a superior paper
of its kind, and presents a neat and
healthy appearance in its make-up.
In the number before us the editor
offers the following premiums, the con
test to be open to any young man un
der sixteen years of age, in any of the
Southern States: For the best half
acre in corn, oats, potatoes, peas, cane
or cotton, cultivated by the contestant,
a chest of tools, worth $20.00, for the
second best a chest of tools valued at
$10.00; for the third best a chest of
tools valued at $5.00. If contestants so
elect, the premiums will be paid in
gold, in lieu of the tools.
Those desirious of contesting for the
premiums must send in their names to
the editor of the Southern World on
or before March 20th for registration.
Contestants will be required to give
a concise statement of the character of
the soil and seed, mode of culture,
amount and kind of fertilizers (if any)
used, cost of cultivating and yield, and
send per express, charges paid, one
peck of corn, oats, potatoes or peas;
five stalks of cane and sample of cot
ton, not less than five pounds, all prop
erly labelled with producer's name,
county and State.
Reports must be sent in by Novem
ber 15.
The co-operation of county and State
agricultural organizations i3 earnestly
invoked to accomplish the beneficial
result sought to be brought about by
the offer of these premiums.

Horse Stolen Reward.
ON last Thursday night I hid a Bay Mare taken
from my stables, seven miles North of Char
lotte, on the Rocky River read, by some person
unknown to me. The animal was seven years
old, a little hip shotten. bright bay, small scar on
the left breast, and newly shod all around. She
was tracked to Charlotte Friday morning.
At the same time S3 00 in cash was stolen from
a trunk In my brother's house.
Any information leading to the recovery of the
horse or for the arrest of the thief will be thank
