B3ffThe rumor comes from Augusta,
that the Richmond and Danville has
made a strong bid for the South Caro
lina railroad. The indications are that
there is some foundation for the report
EST" A letter was received in this office
last night which had been postmarked
in Concord on the 2d, and was
stamped at the Charlotte office as having
been received on the 13th. Two miles
a day. .,
, tSA young man in MLUville, N. J.
has recently paid in fines and coBts the
sum of 13.65 for spitting on the floor
or the Methodist church of that vil
lage. If some of the churches of Char
lotte were to follow suit the proceeds
from this source would beat the contri
bution box business ten to one.
StS'J udging from the number of in
quiries made at this office yesterday, it
would seem that hen canaries are as
plentiful as sparrows. The first and
last inquiry of the day was "d'ye want
to buy a c'nary?" And we don't. The
demand was light, and the order has
been filled. But there-are half a dozen
rich men in town who are verv anxious
to buy some hound dogs. Inquiries
answered at McSraith's.
Beaten to Death.
News reached the city yesterday that
a negro living in Long Creek township
had died from the effects of a beating
at the hands of another negro. The
names of the parties could not be as
certained. Coroner Alexander was
notified and went out yesterday to in
vestigate the affair.

Dr. R. II. Morrison, Jr., was united in
marriage to Miss Lucy Reid. Dr. Mor
rison is a prominent young physician,
and very popular with his large circle
of acquaintances, while the bride is a
general favorite in her section. Con
gratulations are extended the young
couple, accompanied with best wishes
for their future happiness.

The Baptist congregation of this city

charge of their church, but it i3 under

Carter has, however, accepted the pas

Shot at a Cat and Killed a Negro.
The report reached the city yesterday
evening that a little negro met with his
death yesterday near Caldwell Station,
this county, at the hands of another ne
gro boy, by being shot in the head.
Anything like reliable information in
regard to the affair could not be gained,
but from what was learned it seems
hat a Dartv of neero boys was after a
cat. which took refuge in a barn, the
party entering in pursuit One of the
nerrroes discovered the cat and dis
charged his gun at it, but killed one of
his comrades instead of the cat. The
coroner has been notified and will no
doubt hold an investigation as soon as
he gets through with the Long Creek
case.

The Debate Last Night.
The debate at the meeting of the Li
brary Association last night wasT large
attended and) a very spirited affair
throxghout; , indeed exceeded the an
ticipations of those present As the
first embarrassment of the occasion
wore off and the debaters warmed up
to the subject, wit and repartee, elo"
quence of postulatums and refutation,
of argnmentand answer followed each
other in rapid succession until the
house rang again and again with
laughter and applause from the audi
ence. The verdict of the judges was award
ed to the affirmative side of the ques
tion, they at the same explaining that
the defeated side suffered from the
weakness of their cause, and not from
lack of ability in their advocacy of it
Robbed on the Highway.
Some two weeks ago, while on the
public road in Laurens county,- S. Ca
Uncle Davie Leak, a gentleman well
known throughout the country, was
met by three negroes who stopped him
and demanded his lucre, which Uncle
Dave handed over, The robbers were
very civil in their work, but the victim
no doubt felt that it was useless to have
a disturbance about the matter, and
consequently unloaded with as good
grace as possible. He was relieved of
$63.40, all the cash he had, and the par
ties went on their way, and so did Uncle
Dave. His friends in this city will no
doubt be surprised to hear of his quiet
submission, as he is in his best fighting
weight just now, but they must remem
ber that he had his horse to hold, and
that it was a three-to-one case. The
robbers have not been arrested.
The Concert and Supper Last Night
The ladies have cause to feel gratified
at the splendid success of the entertain
ment given at the Mansion House last
night and those who attended no doubt
feel that it was well worth their time
and money. The concert was opened
with a welcome chorus, by the choir of
the first Presbyterian church, which
was followed by vocal duets and solos.
"I would not live alway," by theiEpis
copal choir, was especially well render
ed, as were the two pieces by the Gou
nod male quartet Mrs. Dewey, one of
Charlotte's finest musicians, was pianist
for the evening.
The tables displayed to advantage the
choice refreshments which were served
after the close of the musical exercises,
and with the single exception of the
somewhat crowded condition of the
apartments the affair was in every re
spect a most pleasant and enjoyable
one.
Knights of Pythias.
The Grand Lodge of Knights of Pyth
ias has been in session at Goldsboro
this week, with a full representation
from all the lodges in the State. We
take the following from the Messen
ger's report of the proceedings:
"The report of the Grand Chancellor
shows that since the meeting of the
last session of the Grand Lodge, lodges
were revived at Raleigh and in Pamli
co, and afiorishing lodge established at
Salisbury. Dispensations have also just
been granted for the organization of
two other new lodgesone at Oxford
with 26 charter members, and another
at Newton Grove, in Sampson county,
with 15 charter members.
"The order shows a steady growth
within the jurisdiction, and the endow
ment feature connected with it is like
wise growing in strength and populari
ty. The financial condition of the order
is in a healthy condition."
The election of officers for the ensu
ing year came off Thursday.
North American Review.
The North American Review for
March presents a striking array of
articles, every one of which possesses
the characteristic of contemporaneous
interest. First we have a contribution
from Senator George F. Edmunds, on
"The Conduct of the Guiteari Tiial."
Ex-Minister Edward F. Noyes commu
nicates the result of his observations
of political affairs in France under the
title, The Progress of the French Re
public" In "Trial by Jury, Judge
Edward A. Thomas describes the social
conditions under which our jury system
had its notes origin and its defects in
view of the altered relations of modern
life. Mr. John Fiske makes an able and
ingenious analysis of that great intel-
ectnal movement the Reformation,
educing therefrom the "True Lessons r
of Protestantism." In Law for the In
dians," the Rev. William Justin Harsha
endeavors to demonstrate that the one
rational and effectual ; cure-for our In
dian troubles is to extend the jurisdic
tion of our civil and criminal courts
over all the social relations of the red
man. Prof. A. B. Palmer writes on the
Fallacies of Homoeopathy." Finally,
the Hon. Neal Dow contributes an' ar
ticle on the "Results of Prohibitive
Legislation," demonstrating the success
of the efforts to suppress the liquor
traffic in Maine.
