"your efforts to build up manufactur
ing interests are beginning to tell.
Keep them up." Just 60. We are going
to "light it out on that line if it takes all
summer."
There are occasional complaints
of "sanded cotton." We propose a
remedy : Let the mills come South
where the manufacturers and the rais
ers will be citizens of the same com
munity. tW rfeivices and a Sunday school for
colored people will shortlv be com

W Hand-bills were distributed
freely on the streets of the city

the cotton raising labor?

all parties enjoyed though the man
complained of being very much fatigued

sion that he was too weak from the ef
fects of the ride to support a mustache.

In connection with the episcopal
church, the Eev. J. B. Cheshire proposes
to Open a night school tot young men.
This is an opportunity "which many
will doubtless gladly avail themselves
of, who have not had early advantages.
The school will be held in the building
used as an industrial school, near the
parsonage. Mr. Cheshire intends to de
vote two evenings weekly to this school,
and to commence the good work this
week. He hopes to have capable as
sistance from young men who are wil
ling to help in such a useful undertak

Alvin Joslin at the Opera House.
A highly appreciative audience greet
ed the Alvin Joslin company at the
opera house last night. The play de
picts the adventures .of uncle "Alvin
Joslin," a New England farmer, in New
York, he having visited that city in re
sponse to the invitation of his nephew,
who promises to show him the sights.
Uncle Joslin, however, seems to be
pretty well able to find out sights on
his own account; and in his peregrina
tions gets into a number of risky situa
tions out of which he extricates him
self in a comical manner, by dint of his
shrewd wit and never-failing pluck.
Mr. Chas. L. Davis, the author of the
play .sustained the part of the old farm
er in a very lively manner, and met
with frequent applause. The rest of
the companysustained their parts fairly
well.
The Municipal Election in Salisbury.
A correspondent writes from Salis
bury to suggest a municipal ticket to
be voted for at the coming election, and
The Observer takes pleasure in adopt
ing the suggestion. More copies of this
paper are read in Salisbury than any
other daily paper, and we rather like
the idea of being regarded as the me
dium of communication between the
people over there. The following tick
et is suggested :
for mayor:
M. L. Holmes.
for commissioners:
North WardD. R. Julian and B. H.
Marsh.
East Ward John S. Henderson and
John Snyder.
South Ward John Allen Brown and
Joe Horah.
West Ward Andrew Murphy and
W. H. Overman.
It is understood that this ticket is
placed in the field, and will be subject
to the ratification of a convention, to be
called the latter part of the week.

Easter and the Churches.
Easter services will be held at the
Episcopal church to-day at 11 in the
morning and 3 in the afternoon. The
annual meeting for the election of ves
trymen will be held on Monday even
ing at 5 o'clock. There will be services
on Monday morning at 9 and in the
evening at 5 ; and on Tuesday at 9 in the
morning. A picnic in connection with
the Sunday school takes place on Tues
day. The ehurqh is prettily decorated
with flowers.
At the Lutheran church services will
be held at the usual hours, and the com
munion administered. The Rev. T. H.
Strohecker, the new pastor, will offici
ate. The church is most beautifully dec
orated with cut-flowers, leaves and
plants. Over the arch of the chancel
is a motto, the letters of which are
neatly worked with cedar leaves. Be
neath this is a mass of foliage, amongst
which shines out a cross composed of
gas jets, the effect of which is very fine.
Appropriate music will be rendered by
the choir.
At St Peter's Catholic church, ser
vices will be held in the morning at
half-past seven, and eleven, and vespers
at half-past three in the afternoon. This
church? is also
richly decorated with
shrubs, &c.
The Political Situatioa.
To the Editor of The Observer.
The time is drawing near wnen an
the offices, with a few exceptions, both
State and caunty. are to be filled, to
represent or misrepresent the people,
and candidates for tne nonor (ana tne
fried chicken) will soon begin to love
the dear people. Jc nas Deen suggesiea
by some of the voters that the question
of whiskev. or that of prohibition or no
prohibition, IS to piay an unpuruuib part
in the coming canvass politically, but
why that - shouia be so l ao noc unaer-

when it is eternally too late for him,
that his platform is too small.
No voter, whether Democrat or Re
publican has, or should have, any apol
ogies to make for the way he voted at
the last election if a freeman, and why
should his vote then qualify or disquali
fy him for office in the futoifc
The writer of this was not a member
of the last Legislature, and does not
therefore undertake to apologize for
any blunders it may have made, nor
take any. credit for the good deeds
which it did, but it is difficult to see
what else it could have done in justice
to the people on the whiskey question
than leave it to them to determine.
Members of Congress and of the State
Legislatures are expected, so far as they
can, to carry out the will of their con
stituents when known, but questions
often arise upon which they are not
advised, and there is no better way to
ascertain than to leave it to them by a
popular election.
Notwithstanding all the fuss and
feathers it is to be hoped that faithful
and intelligent men will be selected by
the different conventions as candidates
to fill the offices, especially in Mecklen
burg county, whom all the electors will
cheerfully support without regard to
his vote on prohibition, when no doubt
he voted his honest convictions.
