A Down Town Merchant, Havlne passed several sleepless nights, disturb ed by the agonies and cries of a suffering child, and becoming convinced that Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup was Just the article needed, pro cured a supply for the child On reaching home and acquainting his wife with what he had done, she refused to have It administered to the child, as she was strongly in favor of Homoeopathy. That night the child passed In suffering, and the parents without sleep. Returning home the d j following, the father found the baby still worse; and while contemplating another sleepless night, the mother stepped from the room to attend to some domestic duties, and left the father with the child. During her absence he administered a por tion of the Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing. That night all hands slept well, and the little fellow awoke In the morning bright and hap py. The mother was delighted with the sudden and wonderful change, and although at first offend ed at the deception practiced upon her, has con tinued to use the Syrup.and suffering crying babies and restless nights have disappeared. A single trial of the Syrup never yet lalletl to relieve the liahy. and overcome the prejudices of the mother. Sold by all Druggists 25 cents a bottle. 11 cui Advert tsc uieuts. Absolutely Pure. When the gar fish species ripens, the supply will be greater than it is at present G2T Yesterday was a favorable day for dust, and the dust was lively about the Central Hotel, especially, where some laborers were busily engaged throwing half a shovel full of rubbish into a wagon, and giving the other half to the wind, which bestowed it liberal ly on the passers-by. The Clark Mine. Work has been commenced on what is known as the Clark gold mine, on the property of Mr. J. II. Carson, a few miles west of this city. It is expected that good reports will be received from Mr. Wm. Lillicrop, the superintendent in charge of the W3rk, as the mine is said to have a good record. Lust and Found. A deserving young balesman of the city in company with a "very dear" friend, went out Thursday evening for a drive, and not having returned at a late hour, solicitous friends fearing s..u,e mishap had befallen them, form ed themselves into a vigilance commit tee, and after spending the night in fruitless search the young couple were found regaling themselves with the best the hospitable board of one of our prominent Steel Creek planters affords. Simply a picnic. Mayor's Court. Bill Wade, colored, for beating his wife had to pay $5 and cost. Jacob Lynn, for drunk and down, was lined $2.50 and cost. Two other cases of assault and bat tery were postponed until to-morrow. Iu the afternoon Jonathan Bay was brought up, charged with furious riding and fined $10 and cost. He was further charged with being drunk and down on Thursday, for which offense he had to pay $2 50 and cost. A House-breaker in Trouble. A. 11. Moore, house-breaker, was brought before Justice Waring on two charges first, for disposing of a horse and wagon which he had previously mortgaged ; second, on a charge of ap propriating to his own U3e money re ceived for goods belonging to Mr. Staf ford, of Cabarrus county. There being sufficient evidence to'warrant his com mittal, he was sent to jail in default of a $200 bond for his appearance at court in May. Baltimore and North Carolina Mine. Work is being vigorously pushed at this mine and rich developments have recently been made. Three shafts on this property are being sunk to greater depths, and as sinking progresses the veins largely increase in value. This company will put to work in few days a Frue Vanning concentrating machine which they have recently received. Re liable and practical mining men pro nounce the Baltimore and North Caro lina mine one of the best mines in the country, and its economical and good management is much commented upon. The Salisbury Municipal Election. The Salisbury Watchman thus com ments on the "awful limes" which pre cede the annual municipal election over there ; The man who has been perfectly cool during these awful times when strange municipal suggestions are crowding fast on each other, and in such a way as to lead one to suppo? - that the great majority of our citizei .i are to be hon ored before the matter is settled, has come forward, opened his mouth and uttered: "Let's hold the Salisbury municipal election in Charlotte, the railroad will give us cheap excursion rates." All right, but if you could only wait until the next meeting of the Legisla ture, we can have our corporation ex tended so as to take you all in. Wouldn't that be better? Death ot a Promising Ymng Man. Yesterday at the residence of his mother, on B street this city, Mr. W. E. Wilson died of consumption, at the age of 28 years. Mr. Wilson was a native of Charlotte, and left here in 1872, for Greensboro, where he was engaged in the marble business with Mr. S. C. Robinson. He afterwards removed to Durham and was in business there when he was stricken with the fatal disease which cut him off at so early an age. He was looked upon here as a young man of much promise, and of high character, and his premature death is deeply de plored by many friends. His mother and several brothers and sisters are liv ing in this city. The funeral services will be conduct ed from the Baptist church this morn ing at 9.30 o'clock. Friends and ac quaintances of the family are invited to attend. Durham papers please notice. fr s A Silver Discovery. Mr. Schreiber, late general manager of the Virginia Mining and Manufac turing pompany, of Richmond, Va.,of which Col. A. S. Buford ia President called at our office yesterday exhibiting samples of silver ore discovered by him on the Welborn property, near Lexing ton. Davidson county. Fourteen shafts have been sunk on the property, the ores from which on assay, show con siderable richness in gold and silver. The close proximity of this mine to the famous Silver Hill, but 2 miles distant, would lead to the opinion that it might prove of the same character. We trust that the most sanguine ex-, pectations of Mr. Schreiber may be realized. He is also engaged in selecting a lo cation for a wealthy German colony, which proposes to engage in the manu facture of iron and other articles on a large scale. His attention has been called to some excellent tracts in Chero kee county, which are highly commend ed, and which he regards favorably on account of climate and other induce ments. Lydla X PInkham'a Vegetable Compound has done thousands of women more gooa man uw medicines of many doctors. It tea positive cure for all female complaints. Send to Mrs. Lydla E The Concert at the Female Institute A full audience assembled last night at the concert at the Female Institute, and appeared to highly appreciate the excellent performance of the various pieces laid out as the programme. All the ladies and gentlemen who contrib uted to the pleasure of those assem bled, performed their parts so well that it is almost invidious to refer specially to any particular performer. The first encore was received by Mrs. Atkinson, Mrs. Dewey, Mr. P. Lasne, and Dr. Bidez, for their fine rendering of the overture to "The Lost City," on the piano, organ, flute, and viola. Mrs. Bidez also received an encore for her singing of "J'ai fui la chambre uup tiale." The recitation of "A Dirge for Two Veterans," by W. Whitman, with musical accompaniment by Ritter, was given with much feeling and effect by Miss L. Liddell. Altogether the concei t was a great success. All About the 20th May. We publish the following from the Norfolk Virginian of the 20th to show the people of Charlotte how the matter of our celebration is being talked about away from home, and as another rea son why we should make the necessary efforts to have a big time. Says the Virginian: The programme of the people of Charlotte, N.C, and vicinity for the celebration in May next of the one hundred and seventh anniversary of the Mecklenburg declaration of inde pendence is an elaborate one. Wednes day, the 17th, will be spent in quarter ing all the troops which arrive on that day. Thursday, 18th, there will be an imposing military procession, composed of the volunteer militia from various sections of the State and some invited troops from abroad, and a welcoming address from the mayor, at the conclu sion of which a number of rifle teams will contest for a prize. Friday, 19th, will be spent in a prize drill. Saturday, 20th, Declaration Day proper, the pro cession will march to Independence Square, where the inspection ot the North Carolina troops by the Governor and staff will take place. The proces sion will then move to a site near the city, where speeches will be delivered by orators selected for the occasion, after which a firemen's tournament will take place between the Charlotte fire companies and visiting firemen, which will conclude the celebration.
