Jumbo is Introduced, to the Herd, and
Sets up a Flirtation with Mrs. Hebe
A Very Interesting Scene.
New York Sun.
After the matinee audience had left
the Madison Square Garden, yesterday
afternoon, Jumbo was formally intro
duced to the herd of elephants among
which he is to travel in the Barnum,
Bailey & Hutchinson show. Eighteen
elephants, male and female, were rang
ed in a line on the hippodrome track,
under control of Mr. Arstingstall, their
heads fronting the rings. Jumbo was
then brought out of Lis room by his
keepers, Newman and Scott, and
marched slowly along the line. As he
passed, each of the other elephants
threw out its trunk and touched him,
at the same time emitting a little grunt
ing or puffing sound, while their little
eyes were fixed upon him sharply as
he was within sight. Jumbo walked
steadily, without once turning his bead
aside, but his long proboscis was kept
on a roving commission of inquiry all
the way long, touching each animal, as
if exchanging salutations.
Near the further end of the line stood
Chief, the largest heretofore in Bar
nu'mVEerd. When he saw Jumbo's
huge form rofotning' up before him he
put down his bead in attitude tor a
charge at. him, and it was with diflicul-
i ty t bat his hostile purpose was restrain
ed by the stern commands or Mr. Ar
stingstall and the sharp enforcements
of his pointed steel persuaders. A
second time Jambo was marched along
the line and the former demonstrations
were repeated, bot without any further
manifestation ox ill-feeling- on the part
of Chief Then Jumbo was allowed to
Stand before the middle Of the line for
a few minutes, during which time the
proboscises' of all the others were point
ed toward him and he waved his trunk
at them all, as if they were exchanging
some sort of pantomimic discourse upon
the situation. '
Hebe, the mother of the first baby ele
phant ever born in captivity, seemed to
attract his fancy; and for some time
they tarried on together a little inno-
W!rt irtattrjrr; exchanging kisses by
pldoisff the ends 'of their proboscises to
each other's mouths, and from time to
time caressing each other with their
trunks by a series of light taps and
touches... Then Jumbo was without
any difficulty driven back to Bis room,
ana the other elephants were trotted off
to their , quarters.

Opium Eating. These degrading habits are by far
the worst evils that have ever befulJen suffering
humanity. Thousands die annually from these
noxious drugs. Tne drunkard drinks liquor not
because he likes It, but for the pleasure of drink
ing and treating his friends, lutle thinking that he
Is on his road to luln. Like the Opium Kater. he
first uses the drug In small Quantities as a harmless
antidote. The soothing influence of the drug
takes strong hold upon its victim, leading him on
to his own destruction. The habits of Opium
Eating and Liquor Drinking are precisely what
eating is to. alimentlvenetis, as over eating first in
flames the stomach, which redoubles Its cravings
untU It paralyzes both the stomach and appetite.
So every drink of liquor or dose of op um, instead
of saUsfylng, only adds to Its fierce fires, until it
consumes the vital force and then It-elf. Like ih
glu.tonous tatie-worm. It cries ' Give, give, give!"
hut never enough until Its own rapacity devours
Itself. Samaritan Nervine gives Instant relief In
such cases. It produces sleep, quiets the nerves,
builds up the nervous sstem, and restores body
and mind to a healthy condition.
