A scientific discovery of the greatest interest to all classes has recently been announced by an English chemist. Pro fessor Barff, to the Society of Arts.which promises to become a great preservative of food. This is a new antiseptic com pound, tasteless and odorless. Extensive experiment establishes its efficacy as ap plied to a large number or. staple arti cles of human diet, Boracic acid combined with certain other substances has been known to possess anti-septic properties, but its lack of solubility has prevented its use. Professor Barff, after long investigation has discovered a compound which he calls boroglyceride, consisting of glycer ine, the water ot wnicn has been ex pelled and replaced by anhydrous bora cic acid, forming a new compound. The .i 1.2. ii r , i new antiseptic (.iuh lurmuia ui wnicn is C3 H5 B03) at ordinary temperates is a glacial mass, becoming semi-fluid when and freely soluble in not water. The solutions employed by Professor Barff in his numerous experiments on foods vary in strengh from one in twenty to one in sixty parts or water. The .Lon don Times says that the discov erer exhibited to his audience "a table covered with various articles of food preserved by this method - pigeons, turtle, fruits from Jamaica, sardines from Spain, lobsters, herrings, sprats, fowls, pheasants, a tongue, oysters, beef, and mutton." These had "ail been kept for periods ranging form a few weeks to several months, and in none of them either to the taste or smell, was there the slightest evidence of decomposition. The value or such a discovery, by which can be preserved in palatable condition the vast amount or rood that now peri- with little age, can hardly be computed. Though the cost of the new antiseptic solution has not been accurately deter mined, it is said that it will probably be less than 25 cents a gallon. Boracic acid is found in large quantities incrust- ed in the fumaroles of tneLipan islands and Tuscany, on the lakes of India and Thibet and no doubt largely in our Pa cific States and the neighboring Territo ries. There seems to be, therefore, no rpnQnn tchv fha nonrhomioal onmnnnnil if further tests maintain the claims of its discoverer, should not speedily come into wide and general use and prove a boon oi inestimable value to the human family. Cold-Blooded Murder in Stokes. Danbury News. Intelligence reached this place last Saturday (15th instant) about 2 o'clock that William Nelson had killed James Maybe, Jr., but a few hours previous to the arrival of the messenger. It ap pears that there had been on the day mentioned some kind of an exhibition at a public school house about five miles above Danbury, when Nelson and Maybe met on the school grounds. There was an old grudge between them in regard Maybe having been a witness against Nelson in the Federal Court. It seems that they had not said much to each other, but had been talking to those present in a manner that showed their feelings were very malignant one toward the other. Maybe had been lis tening to the recitations of the children. when some one came up and whispered to him. He left his seat and walked away from the house a short distance toward where some other persons were standing. Nelson, coming up about this time, passed Maybe, almost touching him, and when he had barely passed, he turned and struck. Maybe in the left breast with a knife, whichhe carried in his hand, the blade entering about four inches oeiow tne couar bone, in with drawing the knife it fell from his hand, when Maybe struck him on the head with a small stick. The stick broke, when Maybe commenced f eelinjr for his pistol, and began to stagger. By the time he got his pistol from his pocket he was so weak he could not raise it, but hred into the ground near his feet. while in the act of falling. He fell and died in less than one minute. Nelson left, and has not been seen since. It has reached that point where com ment seems unnecessary. Such cases are becoming so common in this county this being the sixth cold-blooded murder that has been perpetrated in Stokes within the last few years, three or which have been committed within less than twelve months, and of the six murderers not a single one has been arrested and brought to trial. - In addi tion to the murderers, there are other parties whose conduct has, been so das tardly that they deserve to be declared outlaw.
