E3T"Two boobies were yesterday kill ed near Phifer's pond by Master Hugh J ohnson, a flock of these birds having paid a visit to the locality. Hugh had luck such as does not of ten occur to sportsmen around here. EThe captain of the Biddle base ball club (colored) is not willing to con cede the victory claimed by the Char lotte Atlantics (colored) and states that it was understood between the two captains that the match resulted in a tie. 1 Many of our readers will doubt less be interested to learn that Kemp P. Battle, LL.D., presidents the Korth Carolina University, will deliver the commencement address on the 9th of June, before the Alnha and "nplr.annpiA- ties of King's Mountain High School. E" The Rockingham Pee Dee Bee has this to say of a Charlotte minister: Revs. W. S. Bynum and Joseph Blount Cheshire held Episcopal services in the Presbyterian church last Sunday. It was beautifully impressive and the ser mons were splendid in diction and rhetoric, and touchingly pathetic. Rev. Cheshire will hold service in Rocking ham every 4th Sunday. They pleased their hearers, Personal. Mrs. E. N. Peterson arrived in Char lotte Thursday, on the evening train from Union Springs, Ala. Where it Come From. Spending a few minutes with Col. Cowles at the mint yesterday . he ex hibited some rare coins and amone them a French two franc piece of the coinage of 1871 from which the head on the Bland silver dollar, coined in 1878, was taken or rather stolen, as it was palmed off as original and so criti cised at the time. The change has been very slight, simply consisting'in remov ing some of the leaf decorations on the French head, and engraving the word 'liberty" over the forehead. The 20th May Celebration. - The firemen's committee on invita tion yesterday received a letter from the secretary of the R. E. Lee fire com pany of Gieenville, S. C, accepting the invitation to be present and participate in the celebration. The Statesville Landmark, alluding to the celebration, and Senator Bayard's presence here on that occasion, says that there will doubtless be a great crowd in attendance, and that States ville and south Iredell will be well rep resented. The Statesville Blues have accepted an invitation to participate in the com memoration. Mayot's Court Yesterday. John Freeman (colored) was brought up on a charge of assaulting and strik ing another colored man named King Miller, with a rock on the previous af ternoon. The assault took place at the Air-Line depot, and Miller was rather badly damaged. Freeman was bound over to the Inferior court in a bond of $75. For assisting in the above assault, William Brown (colored) was fined $2.50 and cost. Ann Rickett (colored) for profane language on the streets, was fined $5 and cost. John Black the only white man brought up was fined, for drunken ness and profanity, $1,0 and cost. Seme Fine Racing and a Big Titfe Generally 4pcted. , The ; arrangements for the firemen's tournament, to take place in this city on the occasion of the Mecklenburg celebration, on the 20th of May, are about completed, and a grand time is in anticipation by our Charlotte firemen. Companies have been invited and are expected from Danville, Va, Raleigh, Wilmington, Fayetteville, Newbern, Durham, Winston, "Greensboro, Tar- boro, Salisbury and Statesville, from this State; Charleston, Colombia' Greenville, Spartanburg, Winnsboro, Chester and Rock Hill, from South Carolina, and Atlanta and Augusta, from Georgia. Owing to the fact that the tourna ment will last only one day the 20th--and there being other exercises on that day, the usual form of racing with steamers will necessarily be abandoned, and the racing will be confined to hose companies and truck companies. The following rules and regulations will govern the racing: TRUCK COMPANIES. The contest between truck companies will be run under the rules and regula tions governing the same. HOSE COMPANIES AND HOSE KEELS. First. To run two hundred and fifty (250) yards with three hundred (300) feet of hose on carriage or reel, unreel one hundred (100) feet, and attach the same to hydrant and throw a stream of water through pipe with any nozz'e chosen by the company, time to Le called when water appears at nozzle. One man will be allowed to every one hundred (100) pounds of apparatus. Two men will be allowed to each reel over the number engaged in pulling one to carry the wrench and one to carry the pipe. They must start with and at the same time that the reel does, but they must not pull on the reel. Second. In no case will a second trial be allowed. The decision of the judges must be final. In case, however, of an accident happening to any of the com panies before the trial comes off, the judges are empowered to change its turn, so that its turn may not be alto gether lost. Third. Each company's turn will be decided by lot. No person whatever will be allowed on the stand except the judges. Fourth. Hose couplings on carriage or reel must be made with not less than three full turns. Each company will be allowed one man to act with starting judges, to see that apparatus, &c., is according to rules. Not longer than fifteen (15) minutes will be allowed be tween the runs. Each company must be ready at the call of the judges. Fifth. Companies are allowed the use of any two or four wheel hose cart or carriage capable of canying five hun dred (500) feet of regulation hose in actual service safely. Three time keepers shall be appointed by the judges. Sixth. Members of companies when not engaged in the run and all citizens are requested to keep on the sidewalks during the exercises. C. F. Harrison, C. C. F. D. Personal. Mr. Virginius Murden and bride have arrived in the city from Portsmouth, Va., and are the guests of Mr. R. N. Grimes. Rev. Dr. E. A. Yates, who has been spending the past few days with friends in this city, is on his way as a delegate to the General Conference which meets at Nashville, Tenn., May 3d. Miss Bigbie, who has won a fine repu tation as a reader and elocutionist, ar. rived in this city yesterday and con templates giving a reading sometime during the week. She is a Southern lady of distinguished family and comes highly recommended. Lieut. Gov. Robinson arrived at the Central Hotel yesterday, and will spend to-day in the city, leaving to-morrow for Raleigh. The Infanticide Case Verdiet of the Jury. The jury in the case of the two in fant children found under the Carolina Central platform on the first of this month, have at last, after their long- continued and indefatigable efforts to obtain all the evidence likely to throw light on the case, come to the conclus ion that every clue within their reach has been exhausted. They have had an immense number of witnesses before them, and taken an amount of testimo ny presenting in manuscript a formida" ble appearance; and they have zealously devoted themselves to the Case, some of them at the cost of great personal in convenience, and have several times continued their investigations to a late homr in the evening; but all their ef forts have been unsuccessful in bring ing the crime home to the perpetrators. Some of the evidence before them has been of a very startling character, but there are obvious reasons for refraining from publishing much that transpired in the course of the inquiry. The jury complain that their enqui ry was considerably interfered with by the reluctance of certain of the witness es to eive evidence. There can be no doubt whatever, from the medical evi dence already published that the chil dren came to their death by foul play ; and it is much to be deplored that such a crime could have been committed and the criminal remain undetected. But after all their exer tions, the iurv. about 8 o'clock last night agreed upon the following ver dict: "That we find that the two infant children came to their death by blows on the head and chest in the case of one, and by strangulation in the case of the other, at the hands of some person or persons to this jury unknown."
