Prospects for the Crops in Iredell.
The idea seems to be prevalent in
some sections of Iredell that the pros-
pecLa ior a wneat crop were never
more promising. The fruit crop is
abundant up to thi3 date. Although
there was a considerable frost yesterday
morning, still it is hoped that the inju"
ry is not serious. Farmers around
Cool Springs are making an earnest ef
fort to get their tobacco lands in readi
ness for a crop. Tobacco plants are
said to be in abundance, and there is
every prospect for a good crop.

The Charleston News and Courier of
April 30th says : Senator Vance, whose
fame as a j'oker is exceeded only by his
reputation a3 a praying man, will lect
ure in Richmond shortly on "The Hu
morous Side of American Politics and
Politicians." Our cotemporary is slight
ly mixed. "Our Zeb." has never been re
markable as a "praying man." It is
understood that Gen. Robt. B. Vance
does the praying for the family. The
Governor (Zeb.) says the difference be
tween him and his brother Robert is
that "Bob believes in falling from grace
and never falls, while he don't believe
in falling from grace, yet is always
falling."

The cause of his leaving home is un
known to his parents, who are suffering
great distress and anxiety of mind
about him, and would be thankful to
hear from any one who can give them
information as to the whereabouts of
the missing boy. He is 15 years old, 5

MEETING OF THE
OF AT.PETMBI5W.
East Trade Street Wkere is Fonrtk
Street! Earkrers Ask fc an tU
ceive an Extennui of Hoars
A called meeting of the Board df Al
dermen was held yesterday afternoon
at the mayor's office.
The first business introduced was the
repairing of East Trade Street. The
Street Committee were unable to report
any farther progress in the matter, and
some discussion arose on the question
of engaging an engineer to ad viae about
the work. Erentually, however, the
board decided to leave the matter in
the hands of the committee.
Alderman Hutchinson called atten
won to the fixing of the corners of
Fourth and Tryon and Church. It ap
pears that Col. Johnston, who is erect"
ing some new buildings at the corner of
Fourth Street, has a-elaim on several
feet of ground either on Fourth Street
or on the other side of his lot, and to
settle the matter,
Alderman Schenck moved to have a
survey made to establish the corners of
the streets in question. Resolution
adopted.
Letters were read from several firms
giving prices for dressed stone for pav
ing the side walks.
Alderman Wilkes moved to adver
tise for several tenders for the supply
of curb and paving stones, and for
brickwork for the sidewalks. Resolu
tion adopted.
A petition was presented from the
barkeepers of the city, asking for the
rescinding of the ordinance requiring
bars not to open before 5 a. m., during
the summer months.
Schenck moved that it be allowable
to open the bars at 4 a. m. during sum
mer. Adopted. !
The board then adjourned.
Tke Celebration on tke 20th.
A meeting of the general commit
tee in charge of the celebration ar
rangements was held last evening. The
committee is working very energetic
ally, and indications point to a big af
fair on the 20th. The committee wish
to impress upon all the branch com
mittees the necessity for putting forth
every effon in their power, and citizens
are asked to subscribe liberally, as a
considerable amount of funds will be
required to carry out the arrangements
in a manner worthy of the occaaion
and of the city.
It is anticipated that there will be
present to take part in the commemo
ration from 30 to 40 military and fire
companies.
The Hornet's Nest Riflemen have
given an order for 1,000 blank cartridges
for the occasion, and intend to give an
exhibition of skirmish drill.
It is thought probable that 10,000
visitors, in addition to those who par
ticipate in the ceremonies, will be in
the city as spectators.
A reply has been received from
nose company jno. 2, Danville, va, ac
cepting the invitation to assist in the
celebration.
Macallister and His Wonders.
Charlotte is promised an opportunity
of seeing Prof. J. M. Macallister, his
scenic illusions, wonders and mira
cles." He will be at the opera house
for four nights, commencing to-mor
row. From the press notices the feats
performed by the professor appear to be
something marvellous.
The following description of the per
formance is attributed to Artemus
Ward: "In company with a friend we
went to see the Great Wizard of the
World, as he is termed. And, as usual
another crowded house 'full to over
flowing and running over, greeted Mac
allister, and many were turned away,
unable to gain even standing room
Macallister is a great individual He
whips his handkerchief out of his pock .
et and shakes out a dozen large globes
of fire. He doubles it up in his hands
mutters a few words of the choicest
Hindostan, and a dozen doll babies
drop out upon the floor from its folds .
He then holds it up by one corner and
shakes out of it a dozen hens, two roost
ers, half a dozen hard boiled eggs and
a number of patent egg beaters. He
swallows a bamboo fishing rod, eats a
whole pig, and then lifts himself by the
straps of bis boots clear up to the cell
ing. Babies cry to see Macallister and
boys have to be whipped to keep them
at home; where ever he has been he
was surrounded by a loving and patri
otic crowd. Hosts of persons visit him
every day, to borrow money, and he is
so true a gentleman that none get of-.
fended when he says "No." We have
seen him and can vouch for the truth
of this statement.
Notwithstanding his great ability he
wears store clothes, and pays his money
for them like any other man. By one
move of his magical hand he can pro
duce anything he wishes, except puffs
For these he is dependent upon editors.
They notice him cheerfully, as they
consider him a great genius.
Our only wonder is that a man with
such powers should try to live honestly.
But this feat, like all the rest that Mac
allister does, he performs with scarcely
any effort.

A Carious Discovery.
A gentleman in Iredell county, a few
days ago, made an interesting discovery
while engaged in cleaning out a low
land ditch, near Belt's bridge. At the
bottom of the ditch was found the wall
of a house, the logs composing which
were almost all quite sound. The wall
was four logs in height and 8 feet long
by 10 feet wide and there was a double
floor made of split timber. This dis
covery puzzles the oldest inhabitant,
there being no one living in the neigh
borhood who remembers any house
standing there.
