Correction.
Mr. Schrtiber informs us that we
omitted to mention Mr. Nison's name
in connection with the silver discovery
at the Welburn mine. Mr. Nison is in

the latter attends to the correspond

has been in charge of the miniDg and
milling, with very satisfactory results.
A Rival of Worth.
Mr. Jas. Brown, a brother of the late

recently left Haverly's minstrels, with

a dress making establishment which
promises to be to America what Worth
is to France. He had created a decided
sensation, and his path to fame seems
o be clear.

FROM SHELBY.
Items in General all of Which is News
Our Shelby correspondent Bends us
the following:
Bishop Hood, of the" African Metho
dist Episcopal Church, preached last
week in the court house in Shelby to a
crowded audience, including one nun
dred white men. All were pleased
with his sermon which showed that he
was a fine pulpit orator. His words
were given in classic diction, and he
did not use his text as a pretext tor
saying something else. After his ser
mon he showed the rapid progress
the colored Methodists in North Caro
lina had made without resources and
with few preachers, and criticised the
conduct of the Northern Methodist
Church in trying to supplant his A. M.
E. Church. He refuted some charges
circulated against him, whereupon a
colored neophyte of the Northern Meth
odist Church made a spirited speech,
which caused some commotion.
Ike Wells, a tall and fine looking
negro, with lordly carriage, criticised
Bishop Hood's conduct, and proclaimed
bis mission to preach in Shelby and es
tablish a Northern Methodist Churcb,
and he had the money at hi3 command.
He said he was not traveling up and
down the railroad like Bishop Hood,
with a black hat and begging money.
We expected at first to see a difficulty,
but quiet was soon restored.
Rev. Ike Wells preached yesterday
one hour in the open air to a colored
crowd. How good it is for brethren to
dwell together in unity.
Last Thursday night the colored
church was crowded to overflowing to
witness a marriage in high life ; the
colored Venuses and Adonises, in gay
attire decked, came to witness the min
ister unite Bruce Hoey and Ella Rod
gers. The congregation and minister
waited a long time, not knowing the
cause of the delay. The minister and
groom with license were ready, but one
thing was lacking the bride came not.
So the crowd did not witness the wed
ding, as the bride had declined to parti
cipate in the ceremony. Next morning
the groom expectant doffed his broad
cloth and like a man went to work. He
had remodeled his cottage so as to pre
pare the cage for the bird. This indus
trious and bright darkey lost his wife,
and still worse, his $2.50 license fee.
"Barkis was willing," but Ella was
not.
After marriage notices in the news
p ;pers come the deaths, so here is a
transition from marriage to the recent
death of two little children. Mr. and
Mrs. John Kendrick lost their little
Emma, aged 2 years and 11 months,
after a week's sickness. The child bora
her sufferings patiently. She lay for an
hour before death perfectly silent, then
she opened her eyes and exclaimed,
"I'm coming, I'm coming," and life was
extinct. Did this little girl, nearly 3
years old, so fresh from God, see the
angels coming for her ?
Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Price lost on yes
terday their bright little boy Johnnie,
aged 14 months, from cholera infantum.
The parents are overwhelmed with
grief; tbe cradle is empty, for Johnnie
now sleeps in Sheibv cemetery.
Shelby Tmale College has existed in
the imagination of the Baptists of this
section for several years, but now all
concede it will soon be a reality. $7,000
has been generously subscribed for the
cause of female education in Shelby,
and a magnificent $8,450 building will
soon snow its massive duck tront on
Washington street, and will be an orna
ment to Shelby's liberality. Mayor W.
P. Love has the contract for the large
three story brick building which he has
promised to complete in October. The
brick are now being made by Mr. Love.
fertilizers.
Our merchants last year made money
selling guano, but this year the profits
are slim. The merchants prepared for
a huge guano trade. About sixteen here
sold guano and had 2,800 tons ready and
eager for the spring trade. Like CoL
Sellers, the guano dealers thought that
there were "millions in it," but have
been disappointed in their sales, as one-
fourth of the guano is unsold.
CROPS.
Wheat and oat crops look well and
promise an abundant harvest. Our
farmers are learning wisdom. They
are beginning to plant more corn and
wheat and less cotton. The guano trade
will decrease every year and farmers
will use more cotton seed for fertilizers
and to make composts.
The cold weather has been injurious
to cotton that is up. It looks sick.
A Case With a Pistol in it.
Constable Orr went out yesterday to
Matthews Station, having received
warrants for the arrest of Consta ble J.
L. Chambers and H. C. Williams, mer
chant. The prosecutor was a farmer named
Watts, and the parties being brought
before Justices Hood, Smith, and
Bruner, the complainant made a .state
ment to the effect that on Sunday last
the two prisoners drove up to his house,
in a buggy, and after some remarks
Williams took out a pistol and flourish
ed it about After a little while they
drove away a short distance. Chambers
then returned in the buggy, alone, and
asked Mr. Watts to go with him to the
place where he had left Williams. Mr.
Watts at first refused, objecting to the
Distol: but Chambers assured him that
he Chambers had obtained possess-
sionofthe pistol, and that Williams
was lying on his back asleep; and even
tually Watts was persuaded to accom
pany him. When they came up with
Williams, however, he was on his
knees with the pistol in his hand, load
ing it.
He asked Watts his name and get
ting into a dispute with him
threatened to shoot him. He did not
however fire the pistol and Watts seems
to have escaped without injury. He
however, charges the two defendants
with attempting to kill him.
The prisoners were bound over in
three separate bonds of $100 each to the
Superior Court

drawn the capital prize of $30,000, and that half
of the ticket had been sold In Savannah created
considerable excitement, and many were inclined

take, and that the lucky person was our well
