Important matters are tn ha CI -cussed, and the boys will talk about now they may be able to help the cele bration along. tThe surveyor who was out with his instrument yesterday endeavoring to locate the corner of Fourth and Tryon streets, had to give it up on ac count of a failure to find a spot to start from. Excommunications were received yesterday from the Rescue Steam Fire Company, Raleigh, and the Statesville Steam Fire Company, accepting the in vitations to participate in the celebra tion. EST A pleasant event for to-night, and one that should not be forgotten by our people, is Miss Bigbie's reading. The rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association have been secured for her use, and we hope the seats will all be filled. 1SA pleasant moonlight picnic was indulged in by a number of our young people at the farm of Mr. Jim Dowd, one mile from the city, Wednesday night. It took twenty-five buggies to carry the party, and there was one couple in each buggy. GMr. W. P. Clyde and the other members of the Richmond and Danville syndicate, passed through Charlotte this morning at an early hour, on a special train, en route to Atlanta. The examining committee of the road fol lowed them on another train. ElPThe benighted individual who imagines that the cotton season in Charlotte is not perpetual has only to take a look at ,the five-acre platform at the Richmond and Danville Railroad depot. Every foot of it is packed, yet the trains carry it away as fast as they can. The fleecy staple rolls into the city about as fust as it can be carried out on the railroads. EUTicnics are about ripe now and are as numerous as Mike Healy's feet when he is on a hot trail. Yesterday was spent by a very large crowd of colored people, picnicing at Mount Holly, the same place where the Catho lic picnic was held the day before. They chartered a train to tote them and on their return reported having had a royal time. ESherilT Slough, of Cabarrus, was in the city yesterday, having com over to secure aud remove to the jail in Con cord the two remaining negroes who were implicated in the recent train rob bery at Harrisburg, and who were cap tured and brought to this place several days ago. There was an errorof eome sort in his warrant for their delivery to him, and, as a consequence, he had to go back to Concord without them. He is coming over again Saturday, and will then no doubt have his papers fixed so that there can be no mistake. Independent Hook and Ladder Com pany. The annual meeting of this company was held on Wednesday night. The following officers were elected: President, Ro. Chambers. Vice-President, P. H. Phelan. Recording Secretary, W. J. HarrisoD. Financial Secretary, P. S. Powell. Treasurer, S. Landecker. Surgeon, Dr. Robt. J. Brevard. Chaplain, Rev. T. II. Strohecker. The company decided to adopt white pants as part of the uniform on the 20th; and resolved to enter the reel race on that occasion. Things We Would Like to See. Jumbo. From HomeSoae bterestimf Beat inuceaces AWttt tae Old-Ttme Cele 1 ' if Every day fresh evidence of thej growing interest manifested in our celebration, is to be seen. Not only are the papers of our own State talking1 about it andworking tip s boom for the occasion, but the papers from York to New Orleans are all having. some pleasant and even enthnsiastio mention to make. Our people know that the thousands of , visitors who will be here to see the celebration, will come with the expectation of seeing something worth coming to see, and are determined that they shall not be dis appointed. The programme- U being added to and mmle more attractive ev eryday and it will have to be seen id its entirety before one can get an idea of what a grand affair it is really to be. Governor Jarvis has announced that he will be here, and with his staff will review the military companies That the fireman's tournament is to be a thoroughly exciting and highly in teresting feature of the celebration is growing more evident every day. The Charlotte companies have sent out challenges broadcast and they have challenged some crack companies; to be sure. Among them is the Palmettoes, of Columbia. The Register, of that city, intimates that "the Charlotte boys must mean business, when it is remem bered that the record of our Palmettoes is the best made in any reel contest yet' had. 1 04 for 300 yards is hard to beat We hope they will go just to show that they can win on other than home fields." That is just the kind of a company our firemen want to meet. The Charlotte boys want some compa ny that will interest them, and we hope the Palmettoes will oil their heels and come along. Mr. E. J. Hale, the New York corres pondent of the Home and Democrat, in writing to that paper about our coming celebration, lets his memory go back into the past and brings up some old recollections. He says that "it will be twenty-five years a quarter of a cen turysince I attended your grand cele bration of that event, in 1857, and had the first sight of your then compara tively small town, which has since grown so much in population, in busi ness, and in public appreciation. And may not some of this growth be fairly attributed to the public spirit which inaugurated and successfully carried forward that celebration? No doubt of it On that occasion Dr. Hawks de livered an oration full of the matter which he was never weary of collect ing and using in honor of his native State, and he was listened to by assem bled thousands of his countrymen and countrywomen, who found a rich and rare treat in his splendid oratory and most convincing logic Eighteen years later you had another great celebration the Centennial, 20th May, 1875 of the ever memorable event, with that great statesman and patriot one of the noblest representatives of all that is good and great in North Caro- ina Gov. Graham as the orator. The world, and especially North Carolina, has lost both Dr. Hawks and Governor Graham, but it is gratifying to see that you have so great a statesman and so pure a gentleman as Senator Bayard to take their place on the present occa sion, l congratulate you, and sincerely wish it were in my power to enjoy the occasion with you. By all means keep alive the memory of the noble deeds of your ancestors, that thus you may in spire your descendants to imitate them." A Wonderful Case. Among the passengers who arrived in the city on the South-bound train Wednesday night was a man and wo man from New York, who were a par ticularly conspicuous couple. The wo man was the man's wife, but accompa nied him more as a nurse than any thing else. The man was an invalid.on his way to the sunny clime of Florida, and stopped over in Charlotte to get a night's rest. He was afflicted with some peculiar malady of the throat, which made artificial respiration necessary. A hole was cut in his throat just under the chin, and into this was inserted an iron tube which was held in place-by a chain passed around his neck. The man could .not talk, but seemed to breathe with the greatest' ease. He has been living in this manner for two months, subsisting on liquid nourish ment which is passed into his throat through the tube. They stopped at the Central over night and resumed their ourney on the noon train yesterday. It a is a most remarKaDie case ana is a striking evidence of the skill and in genuity of the medical profession of to-day. , Testing the New Fire Bell. Yesterday Chairman Osborne and Chief Harrison, of the city fire depart ment, made a test of the new fire bell, which has arrived and is placed on tem porary supports in rear of the court house. The result of the test was high- y satisfactory and they expressed their opinion that it came up to every point of recommendation. The bell came rom the Meneeley Bell Works, at Troy, N. Y, and Weighs 1,520 pounds. When the water works standpipe is completed, it will be placed in position on the top of it and atsnch a great height and with its remarkably loud tone, will prove an effective awakener for the city whenever there is-occasion for a fire alarm. Mayor'i Court. Mayor DeWolfe was yesterday even o ermraffed in trying the case of Messrs Kendrick and Eagle, for an assault and battery upon 'Edward wimams, on last Monday night Williams had fared badly at their hands, having j his hose broken and his face considerably bat tered. The mayor, put Mr. Kenoricft: under a bond of ftiooior his appearance for trial at the next itrm of the Infe rior court and imposed a fine of $5 and ooBt7TbVifttt:ilairi4oABl!r given d the other as promptly paid. Mr. Eagle was fined 92.50 for his part of the affair. MORE ABOUT Attempted Seleide ia Concord Wednesday evening last, about four o'clock Mf D. A. This club held a debate last night in the Young Men's Christian Association hall, and in the presence of a large audience of invited spectators. The exercises commenced with introducto ry remarks by the chairman, Mr. R. F. Slokes, followed by a speech on elo quence b.v the orator of the evening. The debate, on. the question Was the execution of 'Mary, Queen of Scots justifiable?" was participated in by the following gentlemen : affirmative, Messrs, Heriot Clarkson and, Joseph Rich ; negative, Messrs. Jerome Dowd, S. Price Elias and Tresslow. The speeches all showed considerable ability. The committee of judges , ap pointed to decide the question, gave a verdict for the negative, but highly complimented the debaters on both sides. B0V6H OS BITS.'
