Windom followed Beck in reply to an allusion of the latter to the pending investigation of the doings of the whis key men by a special committee of which Windom is chairman. Beck's resolution having served its purpose in calling attention to the sub ject was indefinitely postponed. A memorial was presented, asking definite action as to an annual collec tion for the American Bible Societv. A Sail Boat Wrecked and Those on Board Lost in Presence of a Crowd on the Shore. Chicago, May 15. A pleasure sail boat containing eight persons was cap sized on Lake Huron at Ralman, Sun day evening, and all on "board were drowned. The boat was in charge of Captain Bucklin, an old sea captain, and his two sons, aged 12 and 17. The others were mechanics in the Pullman car service. A high wind was blowing. The shore of the lake was crowded with people at the time and among the wit nesses of the catastrophe were Buck lin's wife and daughter. Several boats' crews endeavored to save the sailing party but the water was too rough and' the rescuers narrowly escaped with their own lives. Presidential Appointments. Washington, May 15. The Presi dent to-day nominated James A. Mc- Kee, of Texas, to be marshal of the Northern district of Texas; H. L'.'Gos lin, of Texas, marshal of the Western district of Texas ; J. O. Bigger, of Tex as, attorney for the Northern district of Texas ; M. T. Williamson, of Tenn., marshal tor the Western district of Tennessee ; Wm. A. Maury, of the Dis trict of Columbia, assistant attorney general of the United States. Senater Bayard's Residence Robbed. Wilmington, Del., May 13. Senator Thomas F. Bayard's residence, Dela more place, situated in the suburbs of this city, was entered by burglars to day. The family is at present in Wash ington, and those having charge of the house were absent for several hours. Every room in the building was ran sacked and much valuable property was taken. Basil C. Manly Dead. Raleigh, N. C, May 15. Basil C. Manly, mayor of Raleigh, and Briga dier-General of the First brigade N. C. State Guard, died this morning, aged 43 years. He served with distinction in the Confederate army as an officer of artillery. Death of a Confederate Surgeon. San Francisco, May, 15. Dr. H. H.
