DEATH AMD DESTRUCTION Caused by a Cyclone at Garysburg Sunday. Raleigh Njws and Observer. Yesterday a little news came in to the effect that a cyclone had done great damage near Weldon. It came like a thunderclap, at 1 o'clock in the af ter- QAvJ'he,,crusbing wind wag aided by an unprecedented Tiailstdrm. The wind tore up trees bodily, not sparing the largest, so that there is a path througn the woods, three miles wide, in which the trees look as if they were pressed down. A rod is held over the head of these gentlemen. They are accused of "dodging tbongn what they have dodged is not clearly set forth. The re mark: is made that "we have nine of the gentlemen in a position where they must answer answer what oi whom i1 ' we have a hack this year at senator Ransom and the eight representatives." The awful admonition is given, "Pre pare to answer, gentlemen, and pray for mercy on your political souls. This editor rageth especially at sena tor Ransom for his opposition to Coop er s" nomination. It disingenuously claims that Cooper "was the representa tive man of the Anti-Prohibition party of the State, under whose leadership as chairman of the State executive com mittee 118,000 majority was rolled up against one of the most iniquitous measures, etc." This so-called anti prohibition newspaper says "the anti- prohibition party was struck at througn him by Senator Ransom." It charges Gen. -Ransom with malice, and says that Cooper s course on prohibition caused the act of hostility. Linked in with this petty political manoeuvre is also an attack on Senator Vance and Representative Armrield. There is not one ot these true ana tried North Carolinians who is injured by such misrepresentation. The demo cratic people who voted down prohibit ion know or what sturt these men are made. They are not to be deluded by the sophistry that because there was once an anti-prohibition committee in this State and a man named Cooper was its chairman, that "a blow struck at this person a year afterward in his ca pacity as a republican politician and close friend of a notorious republican boss, is, a blow struck at the ahti-pro-hibitionests of the State. This foolish assertion that Senator Ransom would wantonly strike many thousands of bis own party friends and strike themtoo, in the person of Thomas Cooper, a live reDiiblican office-seeker, is on a par with the inception of this great "liberal" movement a movement which shies a brick at the dead, non-political issue of a by-gone year. If the awful fellows who have nothing better to do than per petuate such stupidity would mre tnem selves out to some of our farmers at twenty-five cents a day and "find" their own bacon and greens, they would do an amazingly more promising business It might not be a paying investment for the farmers.
