IT S WEEPS OVER SEVERAL TOWNS AND LEVELS EVERYTHING BE FORE IT. Terrible Scenes--PeopIe are Buried Under the Ruins of Their Homes--At Least One Hundred Lives Lost and Many Injured. Des Moinks, la., June 19. A tornado swept through central Iowa last night from northwest to southeast 20 miles north of Des Moines. The town of Grinnell was struck by it and half of the town was left in ruins. The follow ing is the latest information received: Grinnell, Iowa, June 18 4:50 a.m. A special train i rom Des Moines reach ed this place at 3:40 with 12 physicians on board from Des Moines, (joirax ana Kellogg. The situation is even worse than first reports made it appear. Thirty-two people are dead and about one hundred or more wounded, and eight deaths are reported from Malcolm, which is entirely destroyed. Brooklyn has also suffered ; some eight of the students were badly injured, having been dug out of the ruins. The Chafin House is turned into a hospital, some of the most dangerous cases being carried there. A special sent at 7 :30 says from the numerous and contradictory stories of startled citizens we gather the story of a deep roaring sound preceding a funnel-shaped cloud. C. Pitman's house was completely levelled, burying Pitt man, his wife and three children. His wife's sister, a little baby, a three-year-old girl, Hattie, were taken out dead. A boy, Harry, was fatally injured and Arthur was slightly injured. Not far away, at the residence of Lewis, an old gentleman and lady were killed. Prom here the storm pursued a zigzag direc tion to the north of the city where, after washing out the finest residence portion of the city, it moved toward the college. The next building was-dump-ed into a heap of laths and plaster and broken timber, " burying beneath it 8 students, who roomed therein, all of whom were afterwards resetted, niore or less injured. But one has subse quently died. In a two-story house Miss Abbie Agaid was killed There is hardly a sign left of the house. In the vicinity was a block which .contained nine houses, and all but one was level led to the ground. In one house of this block four were killed, Mr. Pord and wife, a hired girl and Mr.Totten. In this vicinity F. W. Williams' house was unroofed. Prof. Herrick's and Mrs. Morris' two houses were bunched to gether. The scenes around- the rivers are heartrending. The engine house, where seventeen of the dead bodies are laid out presents a sight that brings back "army days, somo of the dead are in the wrecks of their homes. The number of injured range up among the hundreds. At Malcolm seven are dead Des Moines, Ia. A special from Grinnell says: The surgeons now report that 41 are dead at Uunnell and that or G more can not live through the night. The number of wounded exceeds 150 and the pumber of houses destroy ed between 140 and 150. The total loss of property is now estimated at six hundred thousand dollars. It is feared the number of deaths at Grinnell will reach 75. News has been received that Mr. James, his wife aDd two daughters and two other persons living 4 miles north west of Grinnell are dead. It is now thought that the loss of life outside of Grinnell will reach 25 and the total loss nearly 100. Wanted His AVaterproor. Brooklyn Eag e. "My dear," said Mr. Spoopendyke, pulling the shams off the bed, "where is my my, where is my you know what I mean. What did you call it ?" "Your shawl strap V" asked Mrs. Spoopendyke, dropping the baby into the crib. "Oh, I know; your dumb bells. You know what 1 want, my rubber overcoat. Where did you put it?" and Mr. Spoop endyke pulled a pile of letters out of the pigeon hole in his wife's desk and spilled them on the floor. "Where did you have it last?" mur mured Mrs. Spoopendyke, with her linger in her mouth and consternation in her eye. "Had it on," growled Mr. Spoopen dyke. "Where d'ye s'pose I bad it? Think I had it for lunch ? Don't you know where the measly thing has gone tot Spry around now and hnd it! Take your finger out of your mouth : 1 don't suppose it's in there! Get that coat before it clears up will ye ?" and Mr. Spoopendyke shook the clock and peered into the mantel vases. "I don t beliveits going to rain much anyway," faltered Mrs. Spoopen dyke, who couldn t remember having seen the coat for a month. "When it looks like this it's always going to sun shine, and she followed him around the room in a nutter of apprehension. "Of course it is!" snorted Mr. Spoop endyke, "Things are going to do just what you tell 'em to. If you had a lot of tin figures in front and a streak of mercury 'up your spine, you'd only need a sheet iron case and a wire handle to be a barometer! If you'll look along your measley information about the weather, p'rhaps you'll find that over coat at the other end of it! Where's that coat? Going to let me stand here and soak while the moths picnic that coat into a shad net? Take me by the elbow and lead me to the coatl" and Mr. Spoopendyke tipped the sofa over so that he could see under it, and then slapped a plaster bust of Minerva against the wall, under the impression that the coat might have crawled into her ear. "It's the strangest thing in the world ! giggled Mrs. Spoopendyke, hysterically. "Are you sure you wore it nome r "If I didn't, how'd it get home? roared Mr. Spoopendyke, putting his hands on his knees and grinning in his wife's face. "S'pose it hired a hack and drove home? Oh, no! I didn't wear it home. The last I saw of it, it had its hat over its ear and a female water proof on its arm, piking up Fulton Street as happy as an alderman's f uner al ! Whod ve give ,it tor" Been endowing a metaphysical chair in some kind of an old woman's home with it, hav'nt ye? Where's the coat? Develop the coat before I vitiate the in urance!" and Mr Spoopendyke kicked his wife's work-basket across the room and rammed bis arm to the shoulder up the chimney. "Do you remember where you wore it last?" asked Mrs. Spoopendyke, sud denlv becoming calm and analytical "I wore it on my back !" protested Mr. Spoopendjke, who didn't remember whether he had taken it to church or to a hospital. Mr. Spoopendyke growled and snort ed his way to the closet. 14 ke a foghorn, and found things as his wife had pre dicted, "Smart, ain't ye!" he grumbled, as he hauled out the waterproof. "Great powers of inductive reasoning! Some day I'm going to fit you up with a stiff neck and a pot of beans and start a Concord School of Philosophy with you." And with this threat Mr. Spoopen dyke threw the coat over his arm, and all the way to Coney Island entertain ed his friend Specklewottle with a de scription of his habits of order, "which are so perfect, sir, that I could put my thumb on anything I wanted, , sir if my wile would only let tnmgs alone! : : What the Deputy Marshals Cost. Charleston News and Courier. The amount appropriated f or thepay ment of special deputy marshals at Congressional elections for the year 1881 and prior years is $112,600. Attorney-General Devens prepared a state ment on the subject, showing the ap pointments for 1879. By this it is seen that the whole number of deputies ap pointed who served were 5,495. Of this number 5,001 were appointed-under the provisions of the law relating exclu sively to elections, and 493 were ap pointed in certain districts by virtue of the powers conferred upori'marshals by Section 780 Revised Statutes, to appoint deputies with general powers to pre serve order and keep the peace. Those appointed under the general authority of the marshals were not entitled to the $5 per day provided - under thelection laws for special deputies. Alabama had 110 marshals, Arkansas 175, Flori da 189, Illinois 215. Louisiana 241, Ma ryland 698. New York 2,210, Pennsyl vania 792, South Carolina 46, Texas 79 and Virginia 05.
