Three Greensboro Merchants have the 12th inst., 2l(5,oss shinned since pounds of dried fruit Since the anti-Chinese immigration bill went into effect there have been no arrivals of Chinese at San Francisco. The New Orleans Times-D8mocrat of Saturday is a mammoth sheet of forty pages containing two hundred and eighty columns. . During the past seven months over four thousand Chinamen returned to China from California. Arahi Pasha is either very cheerful or very desperate. Ho took a third wife a few days ago. i I o t i s The Nile is on a boom, and Arabi 1'asha is rejoiced thereat, for a booming Nile is an ally of no small importance. Hon. The Liberal convention to nominate a candidate for Congress for the sev enth district will meet at Yadkenville to-morrow. ThP. "blind cool" is coming to the front as a factor in New York politics Cornell. Conkline and Gould are the leading figures. mm. The electric railway in Europe seems to be a success. About one hundred miles are now in operation, and more under construction. The New York potato crop is report ed to be as much of a failure this year as it was last. That State produced last year 25,000,000 bushels out of the 115, 000,000 produced throughout the United States. It was very considerate in the Mar quis of Lome to telegraph Mr. Freling- huysen that he intended shortly to pass through the U. S. on his way to British Columbia. That being kuown the U, S. wiH proceed to make way for him, Sume people are curious to know how Star Route Brady, on a salary of $3;500, could have accumulated a large fortune in a few years. Why, he saved his sal ary and lived on expediting. Good gracious! The Boston Post makes the statement that the women of high toned New England use annu ally for dipping purposes, fifteen tons of snuff. Who would have thought it? Congressman Houk, of Tennessee, spent most of his time when in Wash ington, in a tussle with whiskey straight, and now he is having another tussle with those of his constituents who object to being represented in that way. After the acquittal of Garland for the killing of Addison, in the Lunen burg, Va., duel, a nol pros was entered in the case of Boswell and Roach, the seconds. The Augusta Chronicle points a par agraph thusly : If the poor man cannot purchase food cheaply this year, it will not be because God has failed him, but because a few rich men corner the markets and attempt to circumvent Providence. The Louisville Courier-Journal esti mates the wheat crop of Kentucky this year at trom 16,000,000 to 18,000,000, nearly twice the average crop, while the corn crop with favorable weather will be 90,000,000 bushels. Houk, the roaring ringtail Republi can congressman from the second dis trict in Tennessee, who has been charg ed with drunkenness, says he can prove by his Republican competitor that he has been sober for two weeks. AN ISSUE WANTED. Under the above head the Philadel phia Record of a late date has an arti cle commenting on the lack of interest taken in the campaign in Pennsylvania, and the difficulty of stirring up any en thusiasm among the people. It assigns as a reason that there is really no issue between the parties, that in State and national questions there is practically speaking no difference in their respec tive platforms. They are both for re trenchment, economy, reform, &c, and anything else they think will catch votes. Hence the people have come to look upon it as a contest between cer tain sets of men to hold or win power and take but very little stock in the efforts of these gentlemen to run the State for their own benefit. The inter est in the contest really centres in the independent movement because in the strength which that shows the fate of the Republican machine managers lies. But there is no issue involved either, save a battle against the bosses where the Independents have rebelled against and intend to dethrone if they can. What the Record alleges as the situa tion in Pennsylvania is also the situa tion in many other States, and to a con siderable degree in the country at large. Issues seem to have been lost sight of, and the Democratic managers which might have made them sharp and de fined failed to do so, so that both of the parties are, practically speaking, at seaj shaping their platforms more to catch local or sectional support than to meet any great question or governmental policy. They are, as the case may be, for tariff or no tariff, protection or free trade, for the repeal of or against the repeal of internal revenue taxation, &c, and are so generally mixed on these and other questions that have been under discussion that it is difficult to tell one from the other. They seem to be dodging, as if in doubt what was best for them to do. This dodging has lost to a great ex tent the adherence and respect of peo ple who believe in principle and ally themselves with parties because parties are exponents of the principles they be lieve in. Under these circumstances it is not strange that there should be a lack of popular enthusiasm. That Anderson Court Matter. To tlie Editor of tlie Obsarver. In the issue of The Daily Observer of the 24th inst., occurs an article head ed "The Inferior Court," in which you say that I have indicted my son Samuel Anderson for forcible trespass. This is not true. I have no difficulty, legal or otherwise, with either of my sons. Tbe case to which reference is made is pro bably an indictment against me and my son Samuel for an alleged assault on Mr. David Parks, a son-in-law of mine. You further say that "the old man and s n have each mortgaged their land to pay court costs and by the time these are all summed up neither of them will have money enough to settle the costs. Their houses, lands and their all are swamped in a debt all for the luxury of going to law to settle a grudge." Now, all this is false, and it seems strange to me you would publish such a statement without due inquiry, or if you did inquire that any one would have made such a statement. Some months since it lec;ime necessary for me to commence a civil suit in the In ferior court against a person entirely unconnected with my family, and as it was necessary to give a bond to secure the cost in that cas, I did mortgage my land for that purpose. This case has not yet been tried. Beyond this there is no mortgage on my lands. As for my sons they have no lands. Very truly yourt. Daniel II.
