Regrets at Leaving the Valleytown Paradise Pen Pictures of Places and Things She Can't Tell All She Saw A Country Where Nature Has Lavished Her Beauties, and Where the Health and Sport Seeker Can be Accommodated. CHARLOTTE, August 30, 1882. To the Editor of The Observer. The day after I mailed my last letter to you my liege lord, whom I call the Prince, suddenly appeared before me, and after kissing our pets and a similar little exchange between us he startled me by saying in those potent tones, which experience has taught me admit of no gainsaying, "Pack up, Clo; we must start out ot here this evening." I could not understand what had hap pened to tbe man, but as his expression was placid I knew there was no trouble hidden behind the abrupt command, and so with the alacrity of an obedient spouse I hastened to comply with my Prince's orders. A little later his royal highness vouchsafed to explain. He had sold some property at a handsome advance, and feeling flush and able to take a good long holiday, he wanted his Clo (me) to share it with him. "Be sides," said my gentle despot, "you've been writing to 1 he Observer, and I know by sad experience that when the pen disease once has you in its clutches you're done for, and I lose my little wife until she recovers." VVe were to leave the children with one of his rela tives who would coddle and spoil them for a fortnight he said, and give me something to do in restoring household discipline when we got back to our Charlotte lares and pen ates. Meanwhile we were to mdunt a pair of mountain ponies he had purchased and go where and when fate and the fancies might direct. "We'll leave your trunks and all your fol-de-rols at my aunt's," said his mightiness. "Put on your blue flan nel dress, your stout shoes, and your broad brimmed felt, stuff your saddle pockets with what underclothing and toilette articles you can carry, and lock everything else in your Saratogas." Of course I was sorry to leave the children two long weeks, for they never have been away from me before, but John's word is law in bis little kingdom, so I bad to do his bidding. I was sorry also to lose this quiet retreat which Mrs. Walker made so homey for us that my pets called her grandma before they had been twenty-lour hours under her hospitable roof. I shall never forget the halcyon days we have spent there this summer, the plain rooms, the clean, cool, comfortable beds, the wonderful counterpanes, marvels of needle work, ' the bright bunches of geranium in the yard, the quaint borders of box, the de licious water in the old brown well, the balmy air, sweet with the breath of a thousand flowers, the great apples, the peaches and melons, and the lovely lady who presides over all these with a nat ural grace and dignity both winning and lascinating. Oh, my Charlotte sis ters, who wear yourselves out every summer in a vain quest for recreation and health at the centres of fashion, hie you to that neat private hostelry in Valleytown for a season, and you'll never wish for another summer resort than that. You don't suppose, Colonel Observer that I am intending to tell you of all the places we went to, or all that befell us on our journey. It you do, you don t know Prince John, who says "boil it down Clo; give the Colonel the cream of it, but do leave something to the imagination of his readers. Besides l m not going to have every fellow that says howdy to me put in as an appen dix, so you ve been in the mountains old boy, cutting around with your wife Darby and Joan fashion. They mustn't know twas we, but think twas one of the other fellows." Its only on my promise to obey that my lord consents to my sending you this, my last letter of the season. Instead of details of route and journey, you shall have a few pictures of places and things that made a vivid impression on my mind. Two of these were the upper and lower Nan- tahela districts. The first, about Mun- day's, has been often described by wri ters who could come nearer to doing justice to the beauty of the situation, the good cheer of the house, the forest sports, and the gamey trout of the stream that dashes down the rocky glens and sends its exulting, never ceas ing song, echoing through the majestic forests that line its banks and form green arches high above its fast flowing waters. It Munday were to put out the old fashioned tavern sign, "Enter tainment for man and beast," it would have a breadth of significance far be yond any that legend conveys in less favored lands, for while the inHoor cheer would tempt the sated palate of an epicure, and make the chronic dys peptic forswear his graham bread, the glorious gallop through the land, led by the music of two hounds, the eagwr faght with the bright beauty that is making your reel sound its clickety click, and all the various woodland sports tkat belong to the place, give a meaning to that one word entertain ment that can be appreciated only by those who have enjoyed it all. My Prince and I took it all in, and if any doubt this statement and say I am over enthusiastic, let them try it a week and then tell how they reel. All visitors don't stop at Munday's. Many carry camp equipage and settle down in one of the numerous lovely nooks on the banks of the Nantahela, sleeping on odorous hemlock beds, cooking their fish and leadiDg a merry, wholesome, independent life all the days or weeks of their sojourn. To get to the lower Nantahela you go through that Red Marble Gap which the litigating railroad men will make famous. From Valleytown to the gap the way lies through a rolling, gradual ly ascending country, mostly in virgin forest, but broken by occasional clear ing's with their cabins, orchards and cornfields. There are one or two pic turesque little tub mills where the neighbors carry their corn to be ground mills that would please an artist more than they did Prince John who said "such water powers as these ought to have something on them worthier of their strength than these insignificant concerns. "I tell you what, Clo," said he in one of his poetic bursts, "if I were the Naid of that branch I'd sweep that pole affair off my track quicker than you could say Jack Robinson. I would not let it hang on my fair skirts like a chinque pin bur-on my mare's tail." "But John," said I, "it answers these people's purposes for the time being, and hurts no one." "Yes it does," was his answer, "for it says to every traveler, we of these parts are satisfied with our little and don't care to be disturbed by the bustling and busy world outside." For once my Prince was wrong, but you would not have made him see it, for he felt that the poor little tub mill was a profanation of the beauty of na ture had lavished there. Oh ! the grand trees, oak and chestnut, hickory, birch, laurel and poplar of these woods, and the grace of the great pendulous vines clinging to and swinging around them. What puny efforts to imitate nature we make in our city parks, of which by the way, no place has enough, and how poorly the best of them compare with Mima errand and elorious woods ! For a rough mountain road commend mfl to that bv which von descend from the summit of the gap into the Nanta- hela valley. I snouia can it tne vuria tian's path, for it is narrow, steep and Htnnv. Onr snre-f ooted nags went down, down, down, with ne,ver a stumble, but I was glad when we got out of the lau rels that rose in a aars green glossy wall on either side and saw the level ground ahead, and our ponies must have shared my feelings for they pricked up their ears, whinnied in duet and broke into a lively canter. I said as much to John, who laughingly pooh-poohed my idea, and reckoned "they smelt Nelson's oats." Nelson's was our intended stopping place. We found it to consist of two old and one hew cabins, with the usual concomitants of stables, sheds, loom and spinning wheel. Nelson is a young, energetic farmer, with a wife tilted to be his mate, the two, a kind, hospitable couple, with their parents and one child living herein that simple style which has not changed since the first settlers paved for themselves homes in the coves and valleys of this partsof our grand old State. Their new cabin has a porch supported by black walnut col umns that would be worth their weight in silver in New York John says, but my Prince will sometimes exaggerate a little. Behind4the home lot the Nanta hala comes dashing down from the mountains, in front a considerable branch sparkles and brawles over its pebbly bed and joins the rivej a few yards beyond. Here we found neat beds, plentiful mountain fare, and shel ter and food for our ponies as long as we wished to stay. After a day's ex ploration we decided upon another and then a third, and could I have had my will we should be there now, but the Prince said nay, and that settled it. Please to take out your dictionaries, hunt up all the adjectives, "sublime," "grand," "glorious," and such that you can find, string them like diamonds on a necklace, and turn them every way, and in the best light they will utterly fail to give you any adequate concep tion of the wondrous spectacle which the good God has created here that man may see and adore. For this nar row mountain gorge is invested with indescribable charms that would touch the coldest heart, and awaken in the breasts of all who can appreciate "the wonderful works of God." a new sense of His power and goodness. Four miles below Nelson's is a place where on either side the mountains are thousands of feet above the river and clothed to their summits with mas sive trees of many kinds. Vegetation here, ror some reason, (John says it is the radiation), is two weeks earlier than at Valleytown. The mountains are no more than a pistol shot apart. and the sun kisses the river never more than two or three hours in a day. Here I found wild flowers, ferns and lichens, some of which were old friends, others fresh and beautiful acquisitions. In one place a bold spring of ice-cold wa ter flows in strong volume from near e base ot the mountain which seems be of solid marble. Near it is just the place for a hunter's lodge, and I pro posed to John to buy it and pub up one where we and the pets might come ev ery summer. "How would it be when one of those tremendous cloud bursts came, Clo?" said that practical man. "Wouldn't you be shrinking into the corner with Fred and Betty, and shrieking after ev ery thunder peal are we struck, John V" That's just like the Prince, always dashing cold water on my little con ceits, as the says "to keep my brains from getting red hot." l told you the place was indescriba ble and have I not proved it ? But our Western Extension road will run its through there in a year or two and then everybody can get there and see it. John says, "wind up Clo; its bed time," and I must obey. But I wish before closing to-say that in behalf of all the children in our mountains es pecially, I wish to thank Col. Jones for his noble plan for promoting education. The cities and wealthy communities will perforce tax themselves as much as may be necessary to secure good in struction for their youth, if they get no help from outside. But the mountain eers are poor, they live far apart, and they can not sustain good schools. Yet some of the brightest and most promis ing little people, manly boys and sweet eyed girls, I ever saw were gathered in the pole cabins and cross road churches in every township. We went into scores of them. It made my heart ache to see how eager they were to learn, and how few were their opportu nities." They were not my pets, but they were the children of as noble a race of men and women as the sun shines upon. Give them an education fitted to their surroundings and the generation now growing up in these wonderful forests and amid the grand scenery of our western counties will help to make that one of tbe most glo rious sections of our highly favored State. "You are waxing fervent again," says John, to whom I have just read this, and who thinks as I do on this question ; "Pell them good night Cle. and come to bed." So both good night and good-bye to you. Clorinda. 1 Wonid Pay Ten Dollar p r Bottle fur It. Brunswick county, Va., Nov. 5. 1881. I have tx en entirely cured of a most fenrful looklDg and painful sore on my ankle, by the use of M . Joe Person's valuable Remedy. It came more than twelve months ago, very much like a ring worm. I painted It with tine. Iodine. It be came a very paintul and bad looking place, then I commenced to try everything I could think or hear of, until It became so very painful that I could scarcely walk. Then I went to the best doc tor In the whole country for advice, who told me be could cure me if I would take to my bed and there remain for four or Ove weeks, and If I did not do this pretty soon It could not be cured at all; the bone would become d seased, and my foot would have to be taken ofl. Imagine how I felt to be told that I would have to lose my foot, or to give up all business? Xlther of the remedies would have ruined me. Mind you, this was the advice of one of the best doctors In the State of North Carolina, and this conversation took place last February. I continued to burn, as he advised, with caustic until September, but found no bene fit at all from bis treatment. I was then advised by my friends to try Mrs. Joe Person's Remedy. I ordered ha'f pints from her, and took the first d se on the I7ih of September, using the Wash also, and now I am a well man, the sore Is entire ly cured, and I can walk as far, dance as much and Jump as high as any man. Put me back to the first or September, let me know as much as I now do of the merits of Remedy, and I would not hesitate to pay ten dollars per botUe for It If I could not get it for any less. I think more of It than nny medicine I t ver heard ot It Is not only the best remedy In the world to purify the blood, but I believe It will cure all skin and blood dis eases, and tt will certainly cure a love of strong drink. It gives me pleasure to furnish this for publication, as I know there are many sufferers who would be cured. vuld they know of and ob tain Mrs. Joe Person's Remedy. Dear Madam: -In reply to your letter asking what I think of your Remedy. I would say that the sales have been very fair, and so far as I can learn the Remedy has been very satisfactory to my customers who have used It, especially so In the case of a little girl of this city, ten years of age, who was troubled for a lODg lime with sores breaking out over the fice and neck having the appearance ot Scrofula, and which bad resisted the usual alterative treatment for a long time She took four bottles of tbe Bitters last spring, when the sores entirely disappeared, ana up to this Ume she has had no return of them, her skin looking as fair and clear as any one's.
