The Dolice found Davidson at that ad dress, and he admitted that his wife, whom he had married six weeks ago, had given birth to a child in the room and that on the advice of Dr Theodore Y Kennev. of Paterson, who attended her, had disposed of the feet in the manner named, the paper bearing the address being inadvertently used as a wrapper. PEKRY DAVIS & SON, Proprietors, Providence, R. L sept dtw sept ftoct. 3utterick Patterns T, FOR SEPTEMBER, iMNES -AND ettiflnn -AT- With Metropolitan Sheet I Catalogs J i The Star-Route Trial. Washington, Sept 5. "There is a large audience this morning," remmked Judge Wylie when he took his seat in courc this morning A great crowd, many ladies in it, hud gathered to hear Coi. Ingersoll's defense of the star- routers, me pith or ins aiument was that tike scheme of the indictment must be proved precisely hs it had been laid, without the variation of a hir. He went over all the routes, pointing out variances between the charges in the indictment and the evidence, especially as to dates. The following are sample fragments of his diction : "The taxes are paid by labor and in dustry, and they should be disbursed by integrity." "VVhoever fought for the right, or what he believed to be right, did not demoralize himself. He ennobled him eelf. The war through which the coun try passed was a reformation, not a demoralization. The war was a period of moral enthusiasm, during whish the people became a thousand times grander and nobler than they had ever been be fore. When we shook the shackles off 4,000,000 of people it did not demoralize us. When we changed the hut of the slave into the castle of a freeman it did not demoralize us." "The people of America are distin guished for free schools, for free speech, for just laws, not for corruption." "Without reputation man is but living clay." ' Fear, prejudice, malice, the love of approbation, bribe a thousand men where gold Dribes one. An honest ver dict is the result not of fear, but of courage; not of prejudice, but candor and above all it is the result of a love o, justice." "What the indictment weaved the evidence raveled." "In order to be a good man one does 1 not have to be as cold as an icicle. If a man wishes to be like God (if there is a God) it is not necessary to be heartless." "It amounts to nothing more than characters engraved upon the craters or written on the fogs." "Prejudice would give the lie to all the other senses. It would swear the north star out of the sky of truth." "I believe J W Dorsey to be absolute ly an honest man." "There is not money enough in the treasuiy; there is not gold and silver enough in the veins of this world to tempt me to misstate evidence when a man is on trial for his life or his lib erty." Mr Ingersoll said he would close his address to-morrow forenoon. The At-tornev-Gencral will follow. Special Deputies. BVelgh 5ews bn l Obserrer." To illustrate how the Western inter nal revenue district has been used as a political machine we cite some figures found in the Vance examination. The Secretary of the Treasury allows spe cial deputies to collectors on applica tion. For the year ending June 30, 1874, there was allowed one special deputy who was paid $625. The next year there were tnree wno werepaia si,zu. ice next vear none. The vear ending June 30, 1877, there were ten. iaid 2.861. Now we are approaching the election year, and the matter grows-tnore inter esting; for the year ending June 30, 1880. there were thirtv-seven whose pay amounted to the neat sum of $16,247, and for the following year, rrom June 30. 1880. embracing the election period to June 30, 1881, the number was fifty- four and the oav $18,312. Now then the election being well over, the auvernment becomes again somewhat economical, and for the nine months from July 1, 1881, to April 1, 1882, the number appointed was nine, and the Dav &1.800. Somehow Uncle Sam and the Repub lican party manage in of: years to get along without a very great number of special deputies. The pay' for line months after election times is just one tenth what it was for twelve months during the election period. These are the facts as stated by the revenue de partment. A company of gentlemen, embracing New York and foreign capitalists have, we understand, secured from F J Lord, Esq, the property on South Water, near the foot of Ann street, as a location for their business in this city, and that they intend at once to erect works with the view of purchasing and treating sul- phureted gold ores. It is expected that the company will hasten the necessary preparations and be ready for business in abont sixty days from this date, when they will at once be in the mar ket for the purchase of any quantity of sulphuret ores at fixed schedule piices, according to assay value or average samples. The parties interested in tbis enter prise claim to have ample capital where with to operate, and say they will pay cash for all the ores purchased by them. We hail with satisfaction all such evidences of progress and enterprise in our midst, and congratulate those in terested in this mineral product of the State on the prospect of having a mar ket for their ores so convenient and accessible. The people living be yond the bridge are becoming ex cited at the frequent occurrence of the attempts and will use every meas ure tc stop this nefarious little game t and bring the scoundrels to justice. rr Mill For Register f Deeds.
