Prof. Lewis Boss, uf tbe Judley Observatory, Alba ny, la now lu Washington on ins way to Santiago de Chile, where he is to ob serve the transit of Venus. Prof. Bobs said to-day, concerning the comet now to be seen near the sun : "I have scarce ly a doubt in my own mind that we are actually witnessing a return of the great comets of 1843 and 1880. I be lieve that the perihelion passage will be found to have occurred some hours previous to Greenwich, midnight of the 17th, and that the orbit will be found to be elliptical, with a period of less than three years. We may, there fore, expect the comet back again in 1884, if not sooner. At each fresh plunge into the, solar atmosphere the comet, which at that time is moving with the enormous velocity of 370 miles per sec ond, will be impeded in its flight. The result of this will be to make the inter vals between successive returns con tinually diminish in length. Hotter and hotter will become the mad flight of the splendid comet under the all powerful and increasing attraction of the sun. At last, and as I believe be fore the close of the present century, the comet on some of its recurring ap proaches to the sun will meet low down in the solar atmosphere an obstruction too great to be resisted. THE COMET'S TURKISH BATH. "It will then fall headlong into the sun and vanish from the catalogue of comets forever. This catastrophe may occur next year or some years later.but I believe it must come sooner or later. I am more inclined to believe that the destruction of the comet will take place suddenly rather than by a gradual wasting away. It is even possible that this event will occur without our knowledge, but if we are fortunate enough, sometime when the comet is on its homeward journey to the sun.we shall watch him gradually approaching the great luminary of day until cast in his rays, and then we shall watch in vain for his emergence. This may seem to be a bold prediction, and I may have made some error whose exis tence I do not now suspect. If so I shall be glad to have it pointed out,and at all events shall watch for the first rude elements of the present comet .which are yet to be completed with fer vent interest," If this proves to be a return of the Gould comet of 1880 it will not long remain in view. By the 26ih of September it will be about twenty degrees west of the sun. It will then be only one-tenth as bright as on the 19th, or only about one-half as bright as on the 10th of September. On October 10th its distance from the sun will be about forty degrees west, and it will only be one-fifteenth part as bright as on the 19th. It will probably still be Been in large telescopes, though to best advantage in equatorial latitudes. Short as this period of visibility will probably be, it ought to be long enough te enable astronomers to reap an abun dant harvest of obstrvatior.s. which shall settle the form of the orbit within narrow limits and determine with cer tainty whether the hypothesis of Prof. Boss "be true. The observer of the new comet at the Natal Observatory this morning says; "It was a very prominent object, rising about half an hour before the sun and to the southward of it at ten or twelve degrees. The comet was very plainly seen with the naked eye after sunrise. About 7 a.m. it was easily followed with the telescope. This is the third instance in a hundred years of the ob servation of a comet in broad daylight with a Meridian Instrument." A Bear who had made himself be lieve that he had the worst luck of any animal in creation, was crawling through the woods one day when he met a Serpent, who inquired: "Which way now, my Friend?" "I am going to find some spot where I can retire from the World. The World has npt used me right, and in revenge I will desert it." "I wouldn't do that." "But I will. I can no longer trust anybody. I have been cheated, lied to and misused until I have no faith left. I will now retire within myself, and if any convulsion of Nature takes place the country must not blame me for it. I have borne all that one Bear can be expected to put up with." Bruin went his way until he found a lonely spot, and he then crawled into a hole and began listening for the Crack of Doom. It made him feel good to think that the world was turning itself bottom side up because he had absent ed himself from sight and search, and he was determined not to yield until after several thousand terror-stricken people had come to him with tears in their eyes. Much to Bruin's surprise, the night passed like all other nights. No one appeared during the forenoon to . plead with him, and the afternoon passed without an earthquake or tornado. He momentarily expected the advent of a crowd to plead with him to come back to the World and have faith and confi dence, but the crowd didn't show up. After a long and hungry night Bruin Deganio weanen. Alter much argu ment with himself he crawled out of his den, and was sneaking through the woods, when he met a Hare. "Is the world yet standing?" asked the Bear. "Certainly, never was more solid since I can remember." "And is any one searching for me?" "Not that I know of." "Everything goes on just the same, eh ?" "Just the same." "And didn't you hear that I had lost all faith in human nature, and retired from the world ?" "Never heard a word of it Tra-la old man, I'm off." ' The Bear sat down on a thistle and thought the matter over for a few min utes, and then arose and made a bee line for his usual haunts, telling every man he met on the way that he had been off on a fishing excursion.
