successor of Mr. Hoar.
The New York county Democracy
has decided to have a mass meeting at
Cooper Institute, at an early day, to cel
ebrate the Democratic victory in the
State and county.
Dollie Dulton, olNatick Mass, at one
time well known as a lilliputian, was
yesterday taken to the Worcester In
sane Asylum a hopeless lunatic. Her
dementation was caused by domestic
troubles.
In conSequenee of a scarcity of sail
ing vessels at Philadelphia, freights on
eastern coal shipments have advanced
about 25 cents per ton. The present
rate to Boston is $1.85 per ton. The de
mand for coal in the East is brisk.

In the suit of Wilkerson vs. Beecher,
in the New York Supreme Court, yes
terday, the testimony for the plaintiff
was concluded, after whiobMi? Beech
er's counsel moved to dismiss the suit.
Judge Barrett said that the plaintiff
had failed to make out his case, but he
would give him one day to produce evi
dence of a limitation of the contract,
otherwise the case will be dismissed.

Monroe Express: Littleton Watts,
colored, was shot and it is thought mor
tally wounded', in Pleashnt Hill town
ship, Lancaster county, S C, by another
colored man a few nights ago.
We learned from a prominent citizen
of Richmond county, in Wadesboro on
Tuesday, that the probabilities are that
none of the newly elected officers of
Richmond county (all of them being
Republicans) will be able to give their
official bonds. The Register of Deeds
elect is a negro-.
Will Staton, colored, who was con
victed at our late term of court of an
assault with intent to commit rape on
a young white girl, but appealed to the
Supreme Court, was bailed out of jail
by Mr B F Staton, who carried him
home to work for him, but the circum
stance created so much talk among Mr
Staton's neighbors that he has returned
him to jail.

Henry Johnston was Sunday evening
severely slashed in the left arm with a
razor, wielded by Jim Vaden. The
slashing took place in the southern part
of town, and when Jim was arraigned
Monday morning for felonious assault
he declared that he was only "foolin'
with Henry. In default of bail he was
sent on to the Inferior Court.
