A Live Woman Advertised by Her Hus band as Dead. Richmond Dispatch. In the Portsmouth Enterprise of ves- terday it was stated that a Mrs. tMalis- sia Bute, the wite ot John 1. Jrite, has been published in tbe illichmond Chris tian Advacate as haviugdied in Ports mouth, Va., on the 8th ut December. It was also statea mat .airs, rsnte was not dead (nor jet sleeping), but that she was alive and well ana a resiaent yet ot Portsmouth. Inquiry at the Advocate office elicited the tact that aboutjthe13, of Februarys death notice was received there through the mails, and being ac companied with the payment necessary, was duly inserted in tne issue or tne Advocate, of date February 13th as fol lows: "Mrs. Malissia Brite wife of Mr. John T. Brite, and daughter f Margaret and Solomon Skidmoie, was born in the city of Portsmouth, Va., July 8lh 1855, and died in Portsmouth, Va., December 8, 1S82. "A Friend. "Edenton, JN. (J., papers please copy. There is a mystery connected with this matter, for Mrs. Brite is living in Portsmouth, in excellent health, and it i3 supposed that the notice was put in by her husband, John r.ii3nte,who deser ted her a littlejmore than two.years ;ago and left her with two youug children, since which time she has not seen him. It is supposed that he is now in Rich- mono, and it is reported in Portsmouth that he was niariied last August to a young lady in Richmond, and that the death riotfee was published in the Chris tian Advocate to create the impression on the mind of the young lady that his former wire was dead. But the faet that he is reported to have been married in August last, and the deatb'notice not appearing until February of the next year, would fseem to preclude the idea that the notice was published in order to consummate the second marriage. However all this may be.it is certain that the death no tice is incorrect, and it is equally true that if John T. Brite married a Rich mond girl no record of the transaction appears. This, however, is no proof that a marriage did not take place, and it may be a matter for the police to look into after all. Twnty-Four Hours to Live.
