The middle and western portion of North Carolina; abound in a variety of minerals in greater camber than can be found anywhere in the world within the same area, and new discoveries are being constantly added to those already made. Some of these minerals exist in great abundance, others to a more lim ited extent, but few so limited as to be unprofitable, to the worker. ; Within the past few years there has been a considerable interest manifested by capitalists in the mineral lands of this State, and there is scarcely a day that some party does not visit the State on a prospecting tour and in conse quence a considerable amount of prop erty has changed hands. There is per haps more active operations in mining now in this State than at any former period, and with satisfactory results as far as our information goes. The new processes now being brought into prac tical use for desulphurizing our gold ores has added considerably to the val ue of gold bearing lands, for it has Wives are not beaten so much in Maryland since the whipping post has been erected for husbands who amuse themselves in that way. Ohio is not given to lag ging in the rear when offices are in question. The more our min ing lands are prospected and tested the better they prove, and it is held by ex perienced miners, who have worked in the western mining States and Territo ries, that the mines here can be worked to more profit than they can there the ores being on an average as good or better, while the cheapness of labor machinery. Sec., are all in our favor. The people of other sections have learned more of North Carolina's min eral resources within the past two years than for any dozen years previous to that, owing to the efforts made by indi viduals, the Department of Agricul ture and especially to the exhibit it made at the Atlanta Exposition, by the Agricultural Department and the Richmond & Danville rpilroad, to the latter of which, however, belongs the most credit, for through its efforts the best part of that exhibit was made. The advantages accruing to our State from the Atlanta Exposition Bhould inspire continued effort to keep our resources before the world, and wherever there is an industrial exposi tion there North Carolina should be represented, not insignificantly, but magnificently, not with a few speci mens picked up at random, here and there, but with a complete list embrac ing as wide an area and as many coun ties as possible. Added to these should be a collection of different woods, grains, &c., in fact all the natural pro ducts of the State. A splendid place for such an exhibi tion will be the Industrial Exposition, which opens in Boston in the fall, and which will be visited by thousands of capitalists ready to invest their money when there is a prospect of profit. Let some active, enterprising citizen of each county take this matter in hand, invite the people to send to him such specimens of minerals, woods, farm products, &c, as might be worth exhib iting, and arrangements could be easily made with the Richmond & Danville Railroad Company to have them ship ped in time and put on exhibition. With a little effort, even without State aid, we could have a considerable dis play at Boston, and one that would pay back a hundred fold all that it might cost in money, time or trouble. A Terrific Explosion and,, a Biff Scare. London, March 15 A terrific explo sion occurred in the local government board offices in Westminster at 9 o'clock to-night and destroyed much property.
