We present elsewhere this morn
ing an interesting article on the sub
ject of "Land Ownership," which will
repay careful perusal. We do not,
however, agree with the writer on
subject of the unalienable homestead.
Such a law would be freedom
abridged. It would be a long step
backwards, and one which we think
no modern nation could afford to
make. The reference to old Jewish
customs in regard to the ownership
of land is unfortunate, as an illustra
tion of the point to be proven. Tin1
very fact that the Jewish customs o'
3000 years ago have been discarded
is the very best argument of the
progress of the march of civilization
to-day. The world to-day wants no
feudal system ; it wants no vassalage ;
it wants no priviU ged classes. Free
dom and Liberty are written high in
the temple of human aspirations.
The "Give me liberty, or give me
death" of Patrick Henry goes sound
ing down the corridors of time. It
gathers force and volume with each
successive generation It has vital
ized a new nation on the western con
tinent, and we cannot afford to turn
our faces from the result, by whatso
ever means accomplished.

despatches. Hoar gave notice that

Van Wvcke offered a resolution
calling on the secretary of the interi
or to turnisli copies or tne mortgages
riven bv the Texas Pacific railway on
lauts granted uy act 01 Jiarcii o. j.oi,
also to inform the Senate of the
names of the railroad corporations
now claiming lands that were not
entered during the lifetime of the
g-ant, together with the number of
acres claimed by each uf said roads.
The resolution was agreed to. At the
conclusion of the morning hour, Sher
man called up and asked for the im
mediate consideration of his resolu
tion offered yesterday, that the Sen
ate do now proceed to the election of
officers, namely: A secretary of
Senate, chief" clerk, principal execu
live clerk, chaplain and sergeant-at-arms
The vote on taking up the res
olution wa taken by ye; sand nays,
resulting: yeas, 3i; nays, o(). The
division was upon strict party lines,
Senators Mahone and Kiddleberger
votinir with the Republicans, so it
was agreed to take the resolution into
immediate consideration, me reso
lut ion was then agreed to by a viva
voce vote
Gen. McCook was elected secretary
ami at once sworn in. 1 he remainder
of the Republican caucus nominees
were then elected, the Democrats
votu g for the present incumbents as
a dissent from the departure from
civil service nrin aoles and as a vote
ot confidence in the old otficers.
On the nomination of Win. P. Can
nadv for serceant at-arnis, which was
made bv Sherman Pendleton said
that the present incumbent, alluding
to Col. Bright, is the nominee of thdt
minority of the Senate for this posi.
tion. but he would not move an
amendment to the resolution offered
as it would onlv delay the proceed
ings of the Senate and .vould be of no
use. Beck called on tne gentleman
from Ohio, (Sherman) who offered
the resolution, to state what special
fitness the new nominee- had lor the
office to which lie was nominated.
Sherman replied that he was doing
iust what the gentleman from Ken
tucky (Beck) would under similar
circumstances would do witn a
straight face and without an apology.
and Saerman had no apology to otter
He said that the gentleman whom he
nominated wa well known to the
Senators on both sidea of the Cham
ber. He was a man of standing and
character and well fitted to perform
the duties of the othVe. lie (buer
in n) did not have a word to say and
did not say a word against the gen
tleman now in office.
Beck said he knew that whenever
it suited the convenience of the gen
ileman on the utlmr side of the Cham
ber they held the civil service idea to
be a mere humbug. Thev are now
seeking to remove an officer whom
they know to be the very best officer
who has ever been in the office. Beck
read frm the Congressional Record
some remarks of Anthony, made in
the Senate in 187'J. in whi.-h he ex
pressed himself in favor of retaining
mg in their offices the men who hail
faithfully performed their duties, et
now every ; enator on that side of
the Chamber was voting to put out a
man who hae done the work of the
office to the highest satisfaction of
every member. They had always
been very loud in their clamor when
the Democratic party put a man out
and the moment they get into power
the civil service rules are set wholly
at naught
The election of Cannady was effect
ed by a vote of 32 to 2S. The Senate
then went into executive session, and
when the doors were reopened went
into committee of he whole for the
purpose of continuing the considera
tion ot the new rules.
The question pending was the adop
tion of the first ot the new rules re-

might perform the duties of chairman

On motion of Garland a division of

the first two clauses, which were not'

To prescribe tnedicines which they have not compounded, or which are
not compourided by their direction at the drug stores to which they send
their patietlts. That is one of the reasons why so many of the physichr
shake their heads when you ask them if Brown's Iron Bitters will be eood
for you. It is natural that there should be some prejudice on the t -1
the physicians against a medicine which they have not made even t'lij -X
they Cannot help seeing th good work it does. But people who want t!
get well may wisely disregard this prejudice, and when they are ab'- to
see for themselves that Brown's Iron Bitters is doing in the way of redo
ing persons suffering with dyspepsia, indigestion, vcakness, apd'mVaria
to complete health. It is safe to try Brown's Iron Patters and let' t'ii
physicians take their chance Yet there' arc many physicians who hav e
overcome their prejudices, and who have found Brown's Iron Bitters so
valuable that they ireely prescribe it. For instance. Dr N Rubles
of Marion, Mass. He says he values it highly for enrichin- the blcocTand
removing dyspeptic symptoms. He is also glad to ?av that it dc-s
hurt the teeth. This is a very important considerath n, for it is well krown
teeth as worthless as if made of char. Dr. Newbiil, of Carter's Crce''-
Va.. has used Brown's Iron Bitters extensively in his practice. lie says Tit

Daughtrey, of Franklin, Va., says that he is highly pleased vii
