The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says that the hotel keepers of Chicago report that the attendance at the Democratic con vention this year will be more than usually large, and that the manager of the Palmer House has written that all his rooms are engaged for the Democratic convention, but that he can still furnish some rooms for the Republican convention, to which there does not seem to be such a rush. Heretofore the Republican conven tions were the most largely attended. Speaking of the respective candidates the correspondent adds : It is understood that the Americus Club of Philadelphia will attend the Democratic convention in the interest of Mr. Randall, and the Tammany people will be there simply as lookers on, and with no purpose of under taking to dictate the action of the convention. If there should be any mob pressure brought to bear on the Democratic convention, it is antici pated it will come from those inter ested in Western candidates ; but this only in the contingency which abso lutely and irrevocably leaves Mr. Tilden's name from the list of candi dates, for it seems to have become so thoroughly recognized as scarcely to merit question that if he will be the candidate no other name will be pre sented to the convention. A Demo cratic Senator said to day that in all the conversations on that side of the Senate chamber it was universally agreed that Tilden would get the nomination by acclamation if he would only speak the word. A Mas sachusetts Republican of prominence says Mr. Tilden would get from 20, 000 to 25,000 votes from Republicans in that State, who would gladly seize the opportunity to show their disap proval of the fraud by which he was deprived of the Presidency. Mr. Tilden has never committed an error in his political calculations, and he has no doubt himself that, should he consent to run, he would be triumph antly chosen over any nominee the Republicans could put up. We have not the slightest doubt that if Mr. Tilden will come out of his shell, and say that he would ac cept the nomination, that he could and would be nominated, nor have we any doubt if, when the convention meets, notwithstanding his silence and apparent unwillingness to be a candidate, it nominates him with anything like unanimity that he will accept. It must be gratifying to him to thus see a great party looking to him as a forlorn hope, and beseeching him to lead it out of the wilderness up to the mountain top. We do not believe the sole hope of the Democ racy is in Mr. Tilden, and we don't believe he is the embodiment of all the virtues desirable in a candidate, nor do we believe that he could lead every other Democrat in the race. We believe that any State that will cast its electoral vote for Tilden would cast it for Bayard, Payne, Randall, Cleveland, McDonald, or any other good man that the conven tion might nominate. All this talk about thousands of Republicans in one State or another being anxious to vote for him to re buke the fraud of 76 is mere non sense. They could have rebuked it by protesting against it at the time, or by casting their votes for Hancock four years ago, which they took very good care not to do. They are not nearly as anxious to rebuke as they are represented to be. Whilst we recoguiza the ability, the patriotism and the services Mr. Tilden has rendered to the people, we cannot work ourselves up into any great degree of enthusiasm over him, and we believe now that if he were nominated it would throw a cloud over the canvass from the start. Re publican illustrated papers would be filled with all sorts of ridiculous car toons, and Nast's pencil would from week to week illustrate Mr. Tilden in all the phases from the spoon-fed invalid to the muscular athlete, with the Democratic party down on its knees before him beseeching him to come to the rescue. Nast not only helped to beat Greely but helped, to. kill him. One of th,a har4est things tQ encounter in political campaigning s caricature and ridicule. Falsehood s can be met and bad arguments answered, but the Gartoonist'n pencil or the jester's pen are. supreme in tb domiruQfl where reason or argument fall stillborn. There is work before the Democracy in the coming cam paign, and afterwards if we win, and we want a candidate of mental and bodily "vgjor, not only for the work that falls upon the standard bearer before arid during the fight, but for the work that must be done after the fight is over and the victory won We want a candidate to whom the party can look with pride, and for whom the boys oan throw up their hats and make the welkin ring. A correspondent of the Raleigh News from Carthage suggests the name of P. D. Walker, of Mecklen burg, for Attorney General. - A very comprehensive and valua ble cotton chart has just been issued by the Messrs.-E wen Bros., cotton brokers, 33 and 31 Broad street, New York. It contains a great amount of information as to the cotton trade for the past eighteen years ; the annual productions; the: monthly receipts and exports ; the United States con sumption; the overland and inter state movement; the acreage; the monthly stocks of the United States, Great Britain and the Continent ; the cotton afloat to Europe from America, India, Egypt and Brazil : the cotton crops of East India.Egypt and Brazil : statistics of cotton mills; the world's consumption, with other facts and points of interest to the cotton raiser and cotton dealer. In the Republican district conven tion at Halifax Tuesday James E. 0'Hara,-colored, was renominated by acclamation for Congress; W. P. Williamson, of Edgecomce, for dis trict elector ; John C. Dancy, colored, of Edgecombe, ana Isaac J. Young, of Vance, for delegates to Chicago. Dancy is supposed to be for Blaine and Young for Arthur. In the district Republican conven tion at Asheville, J. B. Eaves, of Rutherford, and T. J. Candler, of Buncombe, were elected as delegates to Chicago. One is for Arthur, the other for Blaine. Dockery was the preference of the convention for Gov ernor. An excursion party of fifteen edi tors, representing the leading papers in New England, arrived at Asheville Tuesday. They were greatly delight ed with the country and the magnifi cent scenery along the way. COMMERCIAL FERTILIZERS. Analysis and Value of Commercial Fer tilizers as Tested at the N. C. A Remedy for Lung Diseases Dr. Robert Newton, late president of the Eclectic Colleee of the city of New York, and formerly of Cincinnati, Ohl, used Dr. Wm. Hall's Balsam very extensively in his practice, as many of his natlenta now living, and restored to health by the use ot this valuable medicine, can amply testify. He always said that so good a remedy ought to be pre scribed freely by every nhyslclan as a sovereign remedy in all cases of lung diseases. Frank Hard The Republican Movement to Strike Out the Enactinc Clanse of the Morrison Bill Litteif to Fail Another Con ference of the internal Revenue Re formers and the Adoption of Threatening Resolution. Correspondence of The Observer. Washington, April 29. The great est speecn yet made in this Congress, and one of the most powerful speeches of recent years, was deliv ered by Frank Hurd, of Ohio, this afternoon. It was a magnificent piece of oratory as well as ratiocination. At its cose nearly all the Democrats and mtmy Republicans clustered around him to offer congratulations. The speech not only took the House by storm, but increased the already increasing prospects of the Morrison tariff bill. Gen Olingman declared that two million copies should be printed and circulated. Mr. Hurd has a fine presence, strong physical powers, a superb voice, faultless elocution and a well ordered, logical, virile mind, stored with great learning in law, literature and politics. He has mastered every trench of the tariff subject and pre sents the revenue reforni side of it with the highest dramatic art and the finest analytical abilityr Theieport was current to-day on what I consider good authority that another conference had been held of those Representatives who are most directly interested in tho repeal of the internal revenue laws. It is said that a resolution to this effeci was adopted : If by the time the Repub lican motion to strike out the enact ing clause of the Morrison bill is made in the House (probably next Tuesday), the Ways and Means com mittee shall report an amendment or an independent bill embodying what is known as the Carlisle amendment of the recent caucus, that thea the members composing this conference will not vote to strike out. The inti mation, of course, is that unless this shall be done these Representatives will vote to kill the bill. It will be remembered that at the caucus ii was agreed that the internal revenue matters were to share the fate of the tariff ; if that was lost all was lost. The implied threat above stated would indicate a distrust or juggling for position. I would prefer to believe the former. Certainly somebody is playing double and I am not the man to accuse either the honorable Speak er, who offered the proposition in caucus, or the members from North Carolina, who insist on its ratifica tion by the House. Canadav has eone President- building, as he thinks, to North Car olina. It is understood that he will oppose Mr. Arthur in the convention Thursday, if that be practicable. ine Kellogg case is showing up ugliness in the ex Senator and present Representative. Price, the contrac tor, testified to-day to paying Kel logg $20,000 for his services in expe diting star-routes while a United States Senator. A prominent gentleman just from New York said this afternoon that a Conkling man told bim yesterday that if Arthur was nominated he would be beaten in the State of New York by 100,000 majority. This gen tleman said that knowing ones were surprised at the strength of Blaine in the recent convention and confidently predicted his nomination.
