The Planter's Journal, published at Vicksburg, Miss., in an artide; on the industries and nrominent business Lmen of North Carolina, furnishes the following sketch of Mr. J uuan 55. Carr. President of Blackwell's Dur ham Tobacco Company: 1 Mr. Julian S. Carr furnishes the most striking exemplification of th kind of blood that is to redeeming, regenerating and disenthralling the South. This and the further fact that the writer was the recipient of many courtesies during his recent yisit.to North Carolina, at the hands of the last named gentleman, warrant all that will be said about . him in the course of this article, which owes its origin rather to impulse than any jprecpnceiTeo inienwpi t jut. uarr s success, wnue m uuo RpnsA almost phenomenal, is yet iva no wise a deDarture from the fixfed laws of cause and effect, and therefore bv no means bevond the reach ;of others who may desire to profit by hia exam-ole. But let us look a little into hia historv . He was born at Chapell HilL the seat of the Unirei aitv nf North Carolina, onlv twelve miles from his present home. 1 While yet a boy he entered the army, and vate in the rear rank," as he express ed it when in the company of a party nf rvilonflls And Ma torsi He obtained Aisdt education at the University of :orth:CarolinaJoni oon after the war, like so -marry 'other misguided young men m the older btates, ne was induced to believe that the Wdst was the place to make his fortune. And so he went off to Arkansas-fto Ldttle Rock, which was perhaps the Koot Yiooa ha nctnIA ViftVft Rmected. . mi " - j There he had that measure of success which most industrious, sober, intel ligent vounir men meet with wherev' fir thev ero. and in all probability he might by this time have been! onejof the leadine men of the Arkansas ostrtitai had h remained there. But it happened that during a visit to his native State his relatives pSrsuaded him, to settle oserto, .homej At that time (1870) Messrs. jaacKweu oc ureen were doing at verysafe1 snug -Jittle tobacco manufacturing business sat Durham, and were looking about for a partner with a view to enlarging it. For a few thousand dollars ? youfag Carr bousht a third interest witn them, and this was the beginning lof his career as a tobacco manufacturer. From the very day- f his - entrance into the firm, the foundation : for what is now five times the largest smoking tobacco factory in the woria. commenced being laid. Not with stone and mortar, for they staid tin their little wood factory several years longer,- but in head work and hahd .worfcr A policy was at once mapped out that needed only faithful, consis tent execution to bring about the success that has finally been reached. Mr. Carr soon demonstrated his abil ity not only to design but to perform. His hrst and foremost principle :in business was to erive to the Public a genuine, article, one that would come to stay, and the second was to let the world know that the product fof W. T. Blackwell & Co's. factory was the purest that grew in the fields of the 'Golden Belt." For seven years the bulk of the firm's profits were spent in advertis ing. Of course that advertisihg would have proven futile in the end had it misrepresented the article; but neither pains nor expense; were spared' in giving, the public, all that it had been led to expefcti 1 'And in this connection, Mr. Carr's statement that from his experience newspaper ad vertisements pay better than any, other; will be appreciated by us who five by "the art preservative i of all arts.', And another-significant fact of roterest to-one craft is that suchi a man as Mr. Carr declares it td be his rule to increase his expenditures; f n account of advertising jn proportion to the increase of his sales. X j Had it not been for the enterprise displayed by such .leaders in the tobacco manufacturing industry as Mr: Carr and 'his associates, it is more than likely that the unnatural state of affairs that has so long character ized cotton manufacture would have had, in great measure, its counter? part in tobacco; that is to say, the huUrofit would probably have been manufactured at the North, Indeed, we can all remember how for. ft long time after the warthis was actually the" case J bu V, thanks to : the :: pluck and enterprise of , a . few men. the rnufacture- of -tobacca is chiefly don6 just where that of cotton should be and soon will be done, in the midst of the very fields in which : it f grows. Although at the head of such in immense establishment, this typical North Carolinian, whom we are nay ihg so much to say about.'is not ypt thirty-nine years old 1 And, as has been stated, his connection with the enterprise, that has made him- rich, and wereboututo say famous, began only fourteen years agoi when he had no special advantage either In means, education or business experi ence, over thousands of his contem poraries, r Some may say. he has been fery bckyI WeUj perhaps he hafe? butyou.ort my goo4feciendJf:hate only to adopt Julian" SrCarr'sf wars of work pursuant to a fixed line pf principle, in order to have the san)e kind of luck that ie has had Per haps not quite so much of it, but still enough to satisfy every healthy asiii is ne married i you ssk . un ;t no man succeeds as he has succeed' without being married.'
