We have heretofore in these col umns referred to the miserable slan ders on the private life of Governor Cleveland, which first found the l light through the columns of an in fcuificant little local paper in the City of Buffalo, and from that were -copied into a number of Republican papers4 of greater pretensions, and thus heralded through the country. Some of the leading Republican organs, laying claim to respectability, declined to publish the Bladders as thpy priginally appeared, but so re ferred to them editorially as to con vey' $ha, impression that theyE were true, and not published only because . they were not fit to be read. PARLIAMENT PROROGUED. ! The Queen's Speech Congratnlates the Country on the Happy Outlook. London,' Aug. 14. Parliament was prorogued today with the usual cere monies. The Queen, in her speech closing the session, said: f I sincerely regret that an important part of your labor failed of its result i4 legislative enactment. Friendly intercourse subsists with all foreign- powers. Diplomatic relations ; have been re sumed with Mexico, and a- prelim inary agreement for a treaty of commerce has been signed. I have to lament the failure of the confer ence to devise means to restore the finances of Egypt which aire s6 ini s portant to the well being and good, order of the country. I shall con tinue to fulfil faithfully the duties growing out of tha presence - ot my troops in the valley of the-. Nile. I trust that the special mission which I have determined to send 'there wjll materially aid me in Considering what steps to adopt. f s I view with unabated satisfaction the mitigation . and diminition of agrarian crime in Ireland, and - the substantial improvement in the con dition of - the people. I design at an early period to call y out attention to the great subject of representation of the people. I rejoice to observe amid the numerous ' indications -of interest in the subject constant proofs of loyalty to the Queen, and respect for the law. These indications inspire me with the full belief that the great national aim will be pursued - with order and moderation, the best secu- rities for such a 'settlement as may conduce to the happiness and liber ties of the people and the?strength of the Empire. . f .
