So ter rible has Its nature been that when I blew my nose" small pieces of bone would frequently come out of my moath and nose. The dis charge was copious, and at times exceedingly offensive. My blood became so Impure that my general health was greatly Impaired, with poor appetite and WQrse digestion. Numerous medicines were used without re lief, until I began the use of B. B. The "ring" will nominate the Candi dates; and this course possesses the virtue of preventing the negroes from having any voice in the matter of selecting candidates, and keeps down opposition to the will of the "ring." Durham Reporter : Yesterday morn ing Mr. T. B. Ray and wife, two aged and highly respected citizens of Per son county, who live near More's Mill, were on their way to Mt. William Bowling's mill, the mule become frightened and backed the buggy off, precipitating Mr. and Mrs. Ray, to gether with the mule, to the bed of the river, a distance of some fifteen feet. Mrs. Ray was instantly killed, her body being mangled, andthte sup- Eosition is that the mule fell on her. r. Ray's injuries, though painful, are not considered .dangerous.. Farmer & Mechanic; Tom Argo's objection to the State tickets may nominate him for Congress as a means of keeping him in the fold. There was much excitement in Fayetteville last week over the; hos tile correspondence between Messrs. J. H. and J. R. Myrover, and Messrs. Josiah Evans and R. K. Bryan. Jr., editors of the Sun. Briefly stated: a letter was written to tht State Chron icle, by Mr. J. H. Myrover supposed to refer to the Sun. That paper re sponded in strong language. J Mr. Myrover promptly sent a challenge, and went to Shoe Heel to avoid arrest. In the complication which ensued (we have seen only one side of the story, and therefore refrain from comment), the Messrs. Evans and Bryan were placed under bond ; and declined Mr. M's proposal to fight regardless of the bond, f f THE CALUMNY BOOMER AN ti. The Sober Second Thought--Rook Keeping in the Treasury, f From an Interview with Senator Gorman in the . Baltimore San. " :i "Have these Republican tactics been successful, and to what extent will the slanders effect Governor Cleveland's vote?-' f "The Republicans," Mr. Gorman replied, "have been very successful in drawing attention to these charges. In the first place, they have been made at a time when there was a general dearth of political newsj and a large portion of the press did not refrain from giving them circulation. It seems to be the case that the public have been educated to look forward in every campaign for personal at tacks. We think it very fortunate that they have been made so early in the campaign, as there has j been plenty of time for sober second thought, and the slander will amount to nothing. I do not believe they will control a single vote. Every body who is familiar with J;he politi cal history of the country knowj3 that General Washington, Alexander Hamilton and General Jackson 1 were subjected to just such vile slanders as have been asseverated about Gov. Cleveland. ; This did not affect their political success, and it will notlaffect Cleveland's. The real issue of this aign cannot be dodged by the Republicans. There is a universal demand tnat the books ol tne rreas . ury Department shall be overhauled by new book-keepers. A long! con tinuance in power of the Republican party has made them careless, extrav agant and corrupt. Defalcations are being frequently brought to Notice. Depression in business is now upon us, and a change of men and an overhauling of accounts is de manded everywhere. Four years ago Senator Davis, of West Virginia, when chairman of the committee -on appropriations of the United States Senate, as the head of that conraiittee, overhauled thoroughly the accounts of the Treasury Department. He forced from unwilling witnesses, , all of whom were officers of the treksury, the testimony that there wereT 1,300 erasures on the treasurer's books, and millions of dollars entered so as to make the books balance, without a single item to ehow 'wnen the en tries were so made or what had be come of the money. This extraordi nary showing did not attract fproper attention at the time because ve were in the midst of great prosperitjt Now the case is reversed. Grant & jiVard's failure had the effect of drawing special attention to public institutions and public officers. Every nian in his private business is having ft bal ance sheet and account of stock. It is perfectly safe to say that the people of this country will appoint new agents to overhaul their affairs at Washington. j The Alankin Letter, j Raleigh News iand Observer. j The Statesville American prints a letter dated Roxboro, August 1st, addressed to "Dear Battle," and sign ed "J. H. Mankin." I . In order to-prevent any inference that this letter was intended for Mr. R. H. Battle, chairman of the Demo cratic State executive committee, it is well enough to state that Mr. Battle knows nothing of the letter or of the person whose name is? signed to it. ;. ' j . "We never heard of such a person, and if there be any such person, he is probably either a negro or a re ve rnier. ; ji The letter in itself is of no particu lar consequence, and all that we wish to say in regard, to it is that it is probably a Republican production, and that it in no wise concerns Mr. Battle, the chairman of the-f Demo- cratic baby. ? . "Rowan's" communication to The Observer in today's paper presenting tne name or Jonn fcj. Henderson, HiSq... as Rowan's favorite for Congress, reminds me of the fact our county has & favorite, one who would create more enthusiasm among the Democracy, not only of this county, but .of the district, than any man that could be nominated. In presenting the name of Thos. F. Kluttz, Esq., it needs no introduction. lie made himseir familiar at every precinct in the old 7th District, as an Elector on the Hancock ticket. He is well known in every county in the present Dis trict. His personal popularity is second to no man's in this District. Rowan has always looked upon him as the man who could poll the largest vote of any man in her borders. Two years ago when the county was con ceded to the Liberals and Republi cans, he was forced to run against his will and. he then saved the county from defeat, and he was the only man that could have done it, carrying the county by a good majority, and that was at a time when the Democracy was not solid and their was a division in the ranks. It took work and a popular man, and Thos. F. Kluttz, Esq. , filled the bill. Should the Democracy make him their standard bearer in this-District, he will make such a canvass as will reflect credit upon the party for their wise selection. Mr. Kluttz is comparatively a young man. He is recognized as the leader of the young Democracy of the 7th District. When the party has needed his services it was only necessary to direct him to his work and it is well known it was always well done. It is to be hoped that on the 9th of September the Democratic convention, when it assembles at this place, will select a man of ability. Considering his strength, personal popularity, and his ability to meet and argue the issues f the day , if they will be guided by these qualifi cations, there is no doubt in whose hands the standard of the Democracy will be placed. It will be that sterling young Democrat, Thos. F. Kluttz. , Justice. "The Plnmed Knight." Indianapolis Sentinel. Blaine has been proclaimed by the Republican party to be a plumed knight. This is only one more proof that that party is a party of false pretences. The action of Mr. Blaine in flying to the court gives the lie to the whole pretence that he is a plum ed knight. The action belies the character. The knight of old was one whose acts were deeds of gallant ry ; whose warfare was one of give and take; who went forth to battle his opponent with like weapons ; who never exhibited his wounds, but went down in the contest, if it were his fate to go, asking no sympathy. The knight of old spurned money honor was his reward. Let the Republican campaign clubs take their plumes to the junk dealer. Even the false pre tence of his being a plumed knight can exist no longer. He can masque rade in the character no more. Speaking after the manner of men, he has given himself dead away. It was, however, a logical result, for his title was won when he was walking down the halls of Congress reading garbled extracts from his stolen let- ters, which contained damning proofs of his official corruption and pecula tion. The Sentinel accepts Mr. Blaine's blundering wager. He has voluntarily placed his own and his family's repute in issue. The Sentinel has made no disrespectful remark concerning the latter, and J. G. Blaine is a mongrel knight to thus interpose his wife and children for raking up sympathy. But he has "shied his castor" into the Sentinel ring. We shall confront the tattooed knight. The General Assembly of North Carolina do resolve, that the Representatives from North Car olina in the Congress of the United States are hereby respectfully re quested to use their influence to so alter the revenue laws on brandy and tobacco as to make them less oppres sive on the citizens, and if this can not be accomplished, to vote for the repeal of the same. Every paper in the United States ought occasionally to keep the fact before its readers that burnt corn is a certain and speedy cure for hog cholera. The best way is to make a pile of corn on the cobs, elf ectually scorch it and then give the affected hogs free access to it. This remedy was discovered by E. E. Docks at the time bis distillery was burnt in FuL ton county, 111., together with a lot of store corn which was so much in jured as to be unfit for use and was hauled out and greedily eaten by the hogs, several of -which were dying daily. After the second day not a single hog was lost, and the . disease entirely disappeared. The remedy has been tried in a number of cases and never failed. Cornered by a Little Dried Up Man. Balelgh News and Observer. They tell a good joke on Dr. York that took place at King's Creek when York was canvassing alone. The ins consistent Doctor was pouring hot shot into the Democrats quite regard less, and after awhile he pitched into Hendricks without gloves. Presently a little dried up Wilkes county man asked him if he didn't vote for Hen dricks m 1876. York was completely nonplussed. At first he attempted to deny voting for him, but after squirm ing and twisting, said he "reckoned if Hendricks was on the ticket with Tilden he maybe voted for him." Mr. Hendricks in the Senate. From Blaine's "Twenty Tears In Congress," He was but thirty-one years of age when first chosen, and his record in the House had not prepared the pub lic to expect the strength and ability which he displayed as a Senator. He was in the full maturity of his pow ers when he took his seat, and he proved able, watchful and acute in the discharge of his public duties. He was always at his post, was well pre pared on all questions, debated with ability, and rapidly gained the respect and consideration in the Senate.
