The Republican county convention - which met in the court house in this city yesterday was not much, of; a convention after all, so, far as the character or amount of work .done went. It seems, to have fallen into the hands of the; machine manipula tors, and the negroes who went into it with the intention "of demanding recognition from the pa-ty, and; a fair share ?C the- nominations for office were" left, . so' to speak. The solitary nomination that was inade does not meet with much favor by the negroes who moved for colored recognition -on the ticket.. J. C. Maxwell, the negro ; nominated for the Legislature, is an unsophisticated resident somewhere in the neighbor hood of Huntersville, and the impres sion among many of the negroes is that his nomination is simply a i blind, and that he is put up. to be ' taken down when the convenient op portunity presents itself. The negro rights advocates under John Schenck demanded three members of the Leg islature and proposed to give the balance of the ticket to the white Radicals, but through the manipula tions of the bosses who ran the con vehtiun they only got one ' and he was one thev didn't want. And thn is about all they mil get - except in the way of promises, never to be fill- :- ed, which are easily made and abun dant before elections. 'As voters, the colored brethren are splendid fellows, but when it comes to demanding a share of the offices from, their , white -alliest is a horse of ' anofoef color. ; From the present ' outlook (the white bosses have gotten "away with John Schenck and his followers. , ' ' K THE CIIOUSSA at. t -ts kelortlortae Put Twenty-Foar 'Rom, Sept;.adaay-Silietto' showing the ravages of: cholera -in Italjrffuring the past 24 hours is as ? follows: :: i&;;;5;f;.rkof5 , XT r -i" I KrP- '- esh Cases? At last night's session of the Republican State con vention Melvin Edwards, the present incumbent, was nominated for Secre tary of State, Theodore Thomas, of Gunnison, for Attorney General and George R. In convention resolutions were reported as follows: , : That the Republicans of Colorado, in convention assembled, affirm and approve the platform" of principles adopted by the National Republican Convention which nominated the great orator and1 eminent statesman of Maine and the most illustrious citizen soldier of the Republic for President and Vice President. That the wool interest of the coun try, now greatly depressed, mainly by the reduction of the import duty by the recent act of Congress, ought to be fostered by proper legislation. To that end we-ask that the import duty by the act of 1867 on wool be ro stored at the earliest possible day. That the South Western part of the State is being devastated by bands of roving Indians, and the lives of the citizens jeopardized. We there fore demand ..that our Representa tive in Congress use their ..utmost endeavors to secure the removal of the Southern Ute Indians from the State. : The report was adopted, and the convention adjoured sine die. : The French Cabinet Discn'ssiBg the Chinese Question. t ....
