The ..de Jrture of 52 of Finkerton's men for Sard City last night was due to 85 tact that the mill owners are pay Soff their men and making; prepa Sons for a long restncVihey will no longer feel like .incurring the noonse of maintaining ; the Pinkers L force. One or two of the mill owners who had; comparatively few Iocs to saw and who nad expected, haa the strike not occurred, to 'be compelled to shut down in: Septem ber,We ncunf;Jy ; will not start their mills,. again this year ,n(i that 4heir employees ' will be forced to seek employ caent elsewhere. The men employed ' by , Hamilton, McClure & Co. , whose milt had been running two days; were intimidated lastniffht and declined to go to work this morning, consequently; the mill Inrain shut down; and ; it will riot be started e gain -until thec strike is over. It is reported that the men employed in the salt works of E F. Gould, at Carrolton, were driyen ; : out this morning by strikers; armed 7 - with dubs. The works were -shut down and turned over to1 the sheriff The State militia are employed ;in guard ine the water works! and other prop- ftrtv. The report nas gone out tnat the average of wages : paid the mill employees was oniy; i zo per aay. This is a mistake, f ' Tie common labor in the mills is paid 10, 11 and 12 shillings, . but the proportion . of common labor -to wqaat tscalled skiuS ed labor is comparatively small.: - An investigation of tne-pay -rolls 01 tne mills at this end ofrthe river shows the average pay to be $1 75 ;per day There is no talk of concession on part either of the emplpyers or working men. Cleveland, July 17. Tne iron ward streets were deserted early, and there was no excitement whatever. Very few policemen were on duty in the ward, and there were none at the mills. A stranger would not - have known from appearances that the day before had witnessed -a bloody not, in which several persons ".were severely injured. 'A' feeling jof i iriseV cunty had settled upon the .citizens, andtney are anxious to see the .end of the .trouble; .Nof ice was posted in' the mills this- mominer' anriouncine that the mills would .be closed indefi nitely, or until the hien were willing w return to work. Thisvhs some what allayed the feeling of unrest as men who were' willine' to' resume work in the mills were afraid to do so for fear of being way laid and; mur jered, or having their bouses burned Police authorities- are confident that were will. not be another 1 outbreak until the mills are started Up or -the men paid off. !
