We examined the books of the treasurer as treasurer ex-offieio of the various penal and charitable ins stitutioas and of the agricultural de partment, together with the vouchers accompanying tfeem, and find that they agree. Tbe officers of the treasury and au d iter's department, in whose offices our examinations were held, were particularly kind and courteous, and it gives us pleasure to certify to their efficiency. Signed, T. B. Womack, chairman, M. S. SobiDS, John E. Woodard, Q. M. Bulla. The balance of $532,521.32 is made up of funds as follows : Educational fund $22, 962. 98 Public fundapplicable to general expenses, 190,626.96 Interest fund, which is specially apptiable to payment or interest and investments, 318,931.38 Wilmington Review : Gravelly Hill, in Sampson county, boasts of a little boy 12 years old, who is a per fect genius. He has a decidedly mes chanicalturn and recently, while at a turpentine distillery in bis neigh borhood, made a careful inspection of the works. On his return home he got hold of an old gallon pot, an old gun barrel and some few other crude materials, and without any assistance manufactured for himself a miniature distillery. He has it now in good workini order and in full blast. He runs off four charges a day, making each day one gallon of spirits, which he sells in the neighborhood lor 30 cents. Such talents as these ought tfc be encouraged and developed. Fayetteville News : We regret to learn from Mr. Kelly Sessoms that his son Troy, down on South River, while handling shot gun cartridges had the misfortune to receive an in jury to one of his eyes from the ex plosion oi one. Alter careful exami nation under Dr. King Anders he was by advice sent to Wilmington and after examination there was found that the cap which was in the eyeball could not be removed success fully and he was then taken to Raleigh where the eyeball was taken out by Dr. Lewis. At last accounts he was doing fairly well. Asheville Advance: The mother of Geo. W. Parish, the engineer who was killed in the recent railroad acci dent near fWarm Springs, has em ployed counsel, as we have been in formed, to bring suitagainst the rail road company for damages. Alamance Gleaner : One day last week some of the authorities of the Richmond & Danville railroad syns dicate visited Company Shops and discharged over thirty of the hands employed in the railroad shops at that place. Carpenters, machinists, blacksmiths and others who have done faithful service, some for twens ty-five years, were dismissed with out warning or notice. No doubt it will go hard with many of them, be ing out of work at this season of the year, unless they succeed in getting work in the railroad's shops else where. The reduction of expenses is the reason assigned for this whole sale lopping off of employees. Gastonia Gazette: Gastonia has made a fine record during 1885. Her citizens had just cause to rejoice at her growth in 1884, but the present year has been the most marked of any two years which has preceded it. Our merchants are all doing a good business and are enjoying that ins crease of trade which it is natural to expect from a young and healthy town. In the way of substantial ims provemencs we have done well. , " o I As Seen front a French Stand point. Paris Gaatels. Vanderbilt, whose sudden death has just been announced, was the richest man in the United States. His beginning in life was difficult. Gifted with a genius for business, he soon amassed a considerable fortune in several, bold enterprises, "these consisted in oil wells, which he was one of the first to exploit, then mines, and lastly a vast network of railways that he succeeded in building and manipulating. He made ample amends, however, for his incalcula ble fortune by erecting schools, libra ries and benevolent establishments in all the principal American towns. A staff correspondent of the New York Star writes from Richmond Va: "On the cars coming from Washington a party of western New York farmers were met who were n a prospecting tour seeking new homes in Virginia. They said the cold win ters of northwestern New York were driving them to a more equable clis mate, and most of them bore the sure marks of consumption. Along the Virginia and North Carolina bound ary there are extensive colonies of Northern settlers, and they are re ported as prosperous and contented. In the party each had some friend or relative already settled here. There was One family man, wife, and three children, with all their house hold goods from the extreme north ern part of New York, who spoke of the three feet of snow they had es caped from, and at the dinner station they left the train and were met by some friends who had already set tled near the place. They seemed to be as happy as the genial sunshine which gave them an Old Virginia welcome." MrW. Winslow's Soothing: Syrup. Eev. Sylvanus Cobb tbus writes In the Boston Cnristlan Freeman : We would by nomeans recom mend any kind of medicine which we did not knw to be good particularly for infants. But of Mrk Wlnslow's Soothing Syrup we can speak from knowledge; In our own family it has proved a bless ing indeed, by giving an infant troubled with colic pains, quiet sleep, and the parents unbroken rest at night. Most parents can appreciate these blessings. Here is an article which works to perfection, and which is harmless ; for the sleep which it affords the infant is perfectly natural, and the little cherub awakes as "bright as a button." And during the process of teething its value is incalculable. We have frequently heard mothers say that they would not be without it from the oirth of the child till it had finished with the teething siege on any consid eration whatever.
