' STOCK LBKI7r STjESS "ACTIVE, j ft.- :V-' Hi, Renewal ot Speculation in Itondliig . Was a Feature of the Trad.ntp TBoom of - Amalgamate Von False Jteport Was Followed by Keactlon Wlilch Unsettled tbe List. . .New Yorkv Jan. - 18.-.The trading In "Btpcks to-day for most of the time was V.ot up to yesterday's rate of activity and the market fell into positive dullness ttlmee. , Aa excellent medium for mar keting stocks -was offered, nevertheless, and' the profit-taking was' industriously furaued udder rover of the sustaining orce features of the trading. A very large number ot dormant industrial Stocks and specialties were awakened in to activity and made prominent ad vances. Of the more substantial standard stocks the feature of the day was the renewal of the recent active speculation lii Reading. This was a striking counter part of the reversion In Union Pacific and the Smelting stocks yesterday. Much of the activity in Reading was traceable to the same sourc.es as that which ac companied its long advance in the hands of the pool. The price was carried to a new record above 149. Meantime .there was conspicuous realising in Union Pa cific. Smelting and Lead, after rising- to new record prices, were also subjected to active realising. Next to these move ments the most prominent in the railroad list were tho Gould ' Southwestems. Creat interest centered upon Amalga mated CoDDer all dav. as action on the dividend was expected before the market closed. The general expectation was ot Vi per cent, dividend of the quarter, but after assembling of the directors a false rutnor was put in circulation that the dividend, would be placed on a 7 per cent, oi per cent, rate per annum. Amal gamated Copper, which, had sold aa low as 110, shot -up 'to 113 on enormous dealings, fell back to 1124 and fluctuated violently. On the announcement of the dividend It dropped to 110, but closed at lltr, -a net decline of H. The late break in - the stock unsettled the general market and the closing tone considerably. While still undisturbed in my expectation that the decreased demand resulting from high prices will ultimately lead to a substantial decline in the cotton mar ket, I feel it due to my friends to say that I have to-day covered a very considerable portion of my short Interest In the market. My reason for this action Is that, owing to bad weather throughout a large portion of the cotton belt, the ginning dur ing the Sixteen days ending laut Tuesday appears to be exceptionally light and while my returns are ex ceeding Irregular and make It diffi cult to forecast accurately the government figures, it is quite possi ble ehat they may show less than 200.000 bales ginned during the last period, which would give us a total ginned up to the 18th of January of very little 'over 9,00.000. While this is about 104 per cent, of the crop as estimated by the Southern Cotton AssoclAflon It Is undoubtedly below what many myself Included have expected and may possibly lead to a revival of crop estimates of about 10,000,000 bales, are a tempo rary though substantial advance. Should I receive later ginning re turns that induce me to modify this opinion I will promptly so state. Although the importance that Is at tached to the figures is, In my opinion, altogether out of real pro portion to their value, 1 think it may he assured that the market will ad vance on a report Indicating less than 9,926,000 ginned and decline on a report Indicating more than 9,950. 000 ginned. This may seem a little absurd, but the price of cotton at present Is largely a matter of senti ment, and not of bulnesr- THEODORE H. PRICES.
