No admission will bf Charred to-night. " Th cllirax for yesterday's features was the baby show in the afternoon. At -9; o'clock babies, accom panied ny fathers, mothers, or nurses were present to bs entered for the :VtM "' The flrat that were Viewed by f,he judges were tne babivs not over t'yi 'oonths old. the next from six tnunths to one year old, then those from' one ..year , id eighteen months, and the lust from eighteen months to tv years. 'The contest was Interest ig, - and anntnlated as well, so far as the adult admirers of the little Xo'k? were concerned. Every baby veil coaxed and vouraged to smile Its sweetest smile and give very .evl--d-nce of its intellectual training, and the little ones, seeming to have at !tat a partial appreciation of what tva expected of them seemtd to vie with .each other In their efforts to mako. the most, favorable impression npon the Judges. The ladles to whom the responsible work, of decision was given Were .deliberate and careful, but they confessed their task- was a difficult one. A baby show is Inter esting, and often amusing, as well, lo onlookers, and yesterday's show was no . exception. Every mother's baby is of course to her the dearest and the prettiest, and more than one -omment like -these was made after tho decision was announced: "Don't vu think my baby as pretty as the one who got the srize? I certainly do." . v v : . "I don't see how the Judges could Kive the prize lo that- baby, when mine Is Just aa pretty." And one fond mother, before the show ex pressed the thought that was no loubt echoed many an other mother's heart, when she said: "Well, tmy baby will get a prise If the Judges are fair.' It all depends upon their fairness," v Tl-e babv show was a success, and the little boys and girls made four prettv pictures worth remembering, tven if at.one-Urne.it'' did seem they .vero all cryingmaking one chorus f twenty-seven voices. They were soon pursuaded to bannlsh tears for i-mtlw. and their laughter was at .nore than one time as united as their obs had been. Tlie Judges were Mesdame? W. W. Hagood. 3. Q. Adams and J. O. Blnrd. he following babies were ttie wln ..eia of the prises: Frances Harriet Ueattie. six months old, a go-cart: Leonard LeGrande Hunter, ten montlife old. gold baby-pins; Mildred Lathi op Henderson, eighteen months )ld srold stick pin; William Baxter Kustey, twenty-three mintn.s old. Bold ring. The contest for the stick pin vas so cIobc between little James Mason and little Miss Henderson that the Judges could not decld. and. It was necessary for the decWIon to be left, to another lady. The programme last night consisted of music and elocution, by Mrs. B. H. Stewart.5 Miss Mary Stewart. Mis Ju ila A'exander and Mrs. P. D. Lee. Dinner will be served to-day as Usual. THK "BTABAT MATER." An Enjoyable Hondltion or a Fine and Elaborate Musical. Composition Tito Elizabeth Choral Society Glvo a Concert to an Appreciative Audience. The choral society of Elliabeth Col lege rendered last night. In the college auditorium, Rossini's "Stabat Mater," the sololstB being Miss Bel L. Sey mour, Mrs. R. H. Matthews. Mr. W. H. Overcarsh, Mr. B. P.-Tlngley and Mr. J. C. Watson. The accompanists were Miss Gertrude Cappelmann at the piano, and"Mr. F. W. Pe Golyer at the organ." Prof. H. Zehm.was the direc tor and deserves much praise for the beautiful success of the event. The auditorium was crowded to Its utmost limit and ths audience being an Inspiration, not only In numbers but in personnel, being composed of the representative music lovers of the city. The music In the Stabat Mater Is especially lovely and the rendition of it all last night, from the prelude, by the organ and piano, to the final amen, was so finished and enjoyable It seems difficult to discriminate in prais ing any one part in preference to an other. , The duet between Mrs. Matthews and Alls Seymour wa particularly bautiful. the contralto voice of the former and the soprano of the latter blending In exquisite harmony, Both were becomingly gowned In white. The bass solo. "Through the Darkness Thou Will Lead Me.' was admirably rendered by Mr. Tingley. and was fol lowed by ft very beautiful part of the programme, recitative and chorus, Mr. J. C. Walaom being the soloist and be ing in excellent voice. The quartette, "I Have Longed for xny salvation," was. charminalv rendered by Miss Sey mour. Mrs. Matthews, Messrs. Watson and Overcarsh. The finale, "Even as Our Trust Is In Thee," being exquisite. The caratlna, ,ri will sing of Great Mercies,"-! was sung by Mrs. Matthews, and her rich contralto voice was shown to - lovely- advantage, The Inftamma tus. sung by Mra. Seymour . and the full - chorus, was ., rendered, with drar matlc effect and every note of R was sincerely: enjoyed by every 'One, The lovely Quartette, "Hear us. Lord." waa sung by Mrs. Matthews' and Miss Sey mour ana Messrs. overcarsh and Ting irjjf xnv mini? mu mnrit, ux. uq.iuu chorus; was a superb climax and was thorougniy appreciated. -Charlotte neonl. have learned that. anything booh j for ,EUzabeth means an evening, of pleasure for all-who attend and the large crowd which en- Joyed the Stabat Mater last night will anticipate with pleasure returning at the flrst. opportunity to. anytmng- at this' popular Institution.
