Special to The Observer, vs Durham, 'Feb. 26. This morning J. R. Hodges, who ao hru tally killed his . artfo yesterday morning In West Dur-bam,-was committed to Jail to await - trial In May for the fearful crime. He W;j5. repeated to-day the statement that h mad yesterday morning that he was (lad of what he had done and " added that he did not care what f el s' A "s lowed. !-..- . . . . .in ..a.. J- "DO you want a neannp or w m ."u waive examination, asked him. T want tn wnive examination.' Tie said. "I know that I cannot Ret out ri of this. There would be no use of a ' hearing. In fact, I would not get put t"s"of It If I could." He then said tnai Im knew what he naa done. v That he waa glad of the death of Mi "wlf and l now ready to take trie ' consequence of his enormous crime, does not seem to be reprntent In the least. . . After this talk with chief TVoodall ''"the mayor Issued the clmmltment for ' the prisoner A large ( rowd had g" "red In front of the police station. The . nan was hurried out one door and S i through another, this carrying him to :AM':tbm cell In the county Jail. He did not raise his head. Had he looked up he might have seen the funeral pna.--0lou Of his dead wife, which passed - '. ha viii4 hnui nt that time. The body .-wan r.arrlo1 tn hpr olfl home III the Stoountry for burial. TRIED TO END HIH MFK ,.;vr -rh prisoner Maid to-day that he" ' " wanted to end Til lire and tried to di JtM-mt flundsv irriniliiir after the crime had been committed. "When 1 left the Vt'T house," he said. "I went to the ruil- road and down the road towards Dur- .ft ' ham. It was then that he tried to fv'yt s-hnot himself but the nlstol would not flre. I then lay down between a pile of "'..- log and waited for the next train. ''l'Hjr Intentions were to throw myself W'rn front of the first engine tnai passen -.m -'over the track. I lay there until I "i-j- almost frose to death, leaving my 'pistol, I decided to do Into town, get some whiskey, nnd then surrender to Chief of Police Woods!!." That is his Story Of Ills actions nnd, Judging from hi Independent conduct and uncon ' cerned air since then. It Is probable Chat he wanted to kill himself. - A POWERFUL MAN. The wlfe-slayor Is now about 50 years Of age, but still a powerful man. The . left arm of his wife was torn and j bruised by the force of the brute's hands when he Jurked her from the , bed. With the woman he brought the bed Clothes and the pillows. These Were with, the dead body when the first , person arrived. The top of the sew ing machine had been torn off In the , efforts of the woman to get hold of something that would prevent the mur derer from dragging her further away. While the crime is one of the worst ever committed In this section there has been but little talk of lynching or anything of that kind. The people stand appalled at the enormity of the crtme but know that the man must hang and are waiting. '" This morning quite a large number of people attended the funeral and -v followed the body to the last resting ( place In the family burying ground ' southeast of the city. PEHSO.NAIj.
