It baa been ascertained that Mayhew has gone West, it Is alleged, taking a woman f the neighborhood, whose, name has not been learned, with him. Creditors of Mayhew who live. In Statesville have attached his proper ty. It is learned from Investigation that MayHew left real and personal property valued at, 15,000 t Ji.ooo, while his debts aggregate $4,000. YeBterday, proceedings were begun to have Mayhew declared an -Involun tary bankrupt. It Is believed that his property will pay his Indebtedness, but It Is estimated that it will take all of It, In tho settlement through the courts, and his family will be left without a home. Mr. C. C. Moore, president of the North Carolina division, Southern Cotton Association, will be In States ville Monday, March 26, In the Interest of his association. Lee McCoy, who lives several miles west of Statesville. was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging him with embezzlement. McCoy was In charge of some wtrn last fall. working at Whitney. Th"V belonged to J. A. Davidson. After a settle ment was made. Davidson had a warrant sworn out for McCoy on the charge mentioned. Although the war rant had been issued several months ago for McCoy's arrest, ho was only located Wednesday. He gave a bond of $100 to appear for trial to-morrow. Messrs. J. K. Morrison nnd H. C. Sidney Gafther, the 14-year-old son of Mayor and Mrs. W. B. Galther, died about S o'clock this morning of pneumonia, after an Illness of less than a week. The fu neral will occurr to-morrow At 11 o'clock. 3. Felix Miller, of Forsyth. Correspondence of .The Observer. Winston-Salem, March 16. Mr. J. Felix Miller died suddenly at 7: SO o'clock last evening at his home, 603 West Fifth street, at the age of 46 years. Brlghfs disease Is thought to have been the cause of his death. Whle he had been indisposed for a few weeks, his condition was not regarded as serious by members of the family, hence his sudden demise Is a sever shock to the relatives and friends. Mr. Miller, for two years or. more, had been engaged In the manufacture of tobacoo. While he made nof preten tions as to the volume of his business, his trade was Increasing rapidly and the class of his goods promised to make his enterprise an Important ont within a few vears. Deceased wss s native of Frledberg. Davidson county, but has resided here for several years. He held a position with the R. J. Rey nolds Company before engaging in business for himself, Mr. Miller's wife died two years ago. Several chil dren survive. Mrs. Arthur Whitley, or Goldsboro, Correspondence of The Observer. Goldsboro, March 15. The death of Mrs. Arthur Whltely occurred very unexpectedly in this city to-day. Only her little son and daughter were at home, her husband, Mr. Arthur Whlt ely, being absent at his post of ser vice as superintendent of the Southern Cotton Mill at Conetoe. Neighbors hurried to the scene and every service necessary In the stricken home was cheerfully rendered. Mr. Whltely wa telephoned for and Is expected at the earliest possible moment. Mrs. Whlt ely was a daughter of the late Mr. Luke Pear sail, of Mount Olive, and was a most estimable Christian wom an. She had long been a sufferer from consumption, to which she suc cumbed this morning. She leaves a devoted- husband, three shall children, and a wide circle of relatives to mourn her d demlnc. K. L. ISogcrs, of Durham. Correspondence of The Observer. burham, March 15. Mr. E. L. Rogers, a well-known cltlaen, died suddenly at his home on Cleveland street this morning at 3 o'clock. This morning at 2:50 Mrs. Kogers was awakened by tha heavy breathing of her husband. When she tried to arouse him she failed. A physician was hastily called but the sick man, had passed away before the! feet, standard construction one story doctor could get to the house. For many years he was in the tobacco business. A num ber of years ago h? married Mrs. Bailey and of this union there Is one daughter, lie left a number of other relatives, moat of whom live In Gran ville county. The funeral will take place from the residence to-morrow af ternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Hev. C. J.
