The next session of the Ph'nr ' est)satinir committee will be held Here lTfciSut day, after Messrs. Lyod a id ChrtsUnsen tav. ma ' trip Sthe whikey centres In ftat cMon. Then the tug of war will coroe. to show Zml ot the eu.pictoua trancUone on the part of certain whiekey hoaaee. This ' frornM! to be one of the roost interesting mxiom the committee ha i yet Jiad. Much anxiety le manifested on the part f the whiskey concerns Interested1 in ti e SMMWO worth of claims the oommfttee in HdSgP Pending investigation and there I more or less general curiosity about when these claims are to be dlspos. "J w,..k., i vnn tnlrt a oronrietor of a whiskey concern tolay who called on him at his hotel to ask that his claim he released, will serve to show the pol'cy rSS i- hHj. adoDted toward thia iho fnmmittee has adopted toward phase of the Investigation. "While I personally am satisfied n Observation Mr. Christensen and I from made on our recent trip North." he said, that number or me ciaim hould be paid, still our sub-committee will not take the responsibility of re leasing any claim, not even If you show conclusively that all or your dealings Iive been fair and proper. We prefer Tor the remainder of the committee to tufcc their share of such responsibility. Is the new board in good business ahape, perfectly rellnble and ail that sort of thing?" the whiskey. man asked. "8o far as we huve been able to discover the board is perfectly straight, and has Known a dispoHitlon to conduct the busi ness to a manner It should be conducted. It is In really better financial condition Iran th old board, having some $300,000 on hand with which to pay eah tor Its purchases on nocount of the other claims being held up." The whiskey man wanted to know Whether caoli was being paid by the new board, incidentally mentioning that thous ands of dollars could be saved by a cash policy, bills being discounted at 3 per cent Mr. Lyon was unable to say whether cash waa to be paJd or not; he really did not know whether the $300,000 the board had Was getting unv interest from the banks. It has been urged before members of the committee that the new board h violated the resolution passed by the last legislature In reference to the purchase Of glass. This resolution directed purchas ing from the Carolina fllass Company for present needs, up to o days from the passage of the resolution, and prompt advertising for other bids, the advertise ment to state quantity and quality. It Is claimed that as the advertisement the board did put out and not mention quan tity or quality, failed to meet the re quirements of the resolution, and the board neglecting to award a contract at the quarterly meeting Just ended has de ferred the mutter until the June quarterly meeting (the resolution requiring the con tracts to be awarded only quarterly). When the glass concerns throughout the Country will be shut down, and none but the Columbia convern which is equlpfC'l with dispensary moulds, will lie able to 1111 the orders. It is pointed out that the new board has deferred this business in the Interest of the Carolina, concern, which bus been blacklisted. Along this line it will be of interest to Bote the difference between the bids for .glass contracts that were nn flic with the board when It held Its recent quarterly meeting. ...... The Carolina C.lnss Company, which the committee found selling In 100 cr.it.-. lots at $3.40 a gross for half pints. $4.lv a gross for pints and $.VtS6 a gross for quarts In January when officers of the concern were put on the gridiron, has enroe In with a bid of $-'.70 for half pints. 14.10 for pints and W.SO for quarts. The company also offers a "new style" for 12.75 for half pints. $4.1'. for pints and ' I7.HI for quarts. Demijohns, which were selling at 24 cents each, and are yet sell ing to the dispensary at that price, are Stow offered at 21 cents each. The Flaccus concern of Plttaburg. which the Carolina people bought out of the way. according to the showing of the January hearing, has come In with this bid: half pints $3.19, pints $4.7.1, quarts tS.td; (t-o. Baltimore, ovals $3.23. lft-ox. lime U-XO. 32-OI. same S.T&. brandy fours $t.7K; demijohns 24 cents. The Kastern Bottlers Supply Company makes a bid of $2.W for half pints. $4. tin for pints and $8.30 for quarts; flasks the same except In quarts, which are $R 90. Packham Bros and Cumberland !lnss Company, which are the same and which put the Carolina concern out tn the cold with the testimony of l. II. J'ai kham put In a bid of $177 for half pints. $4.4o for pints and $7.70 for quarts. Now. as will be seen, the Carolina Com pany lias come down from a monopoly of the business at prices above nil others. When It did business several years with the dispensary to the extent of 20tt cars a year, to a blacklisted suppliant for busi ness With a bid below all the others. It looks as if the hoard was placed in the predicament of awarding the contract to a higher bidder or patronizing a black listed concern. There are some however, who are wicked enough to think that the contract was deferred until the Carolina concern is the only one nble to (111 the orders, when It will bo In position to ele vate its bid slightly. All this might have been cleared up had the newspaiwr repre sentatives been admitted to the sessions of the board. These figures come from Mr. T.yon. who calculates the difference, txtween the hid the Carolina concern now makes and the contract it was operating on in January at $24N a car for half pints. $HiO a car for pints and $ixn.wi a car for quarts, a total difference of PZ.m m the orders for m , various methods of massage Includ cm ahead th U'gllnture took ay!i, th niihni.i.r .ii,,.ii.. from the Carolina company. "it I, to these two thoughts that I ta.1!! your attention this mom r In ; L Ths sUvery of alfL X. Free iConf in Jesus Cbrist The slavery of sin Js te fee considered In Its three - ' fold nature; the jruilt of sin, the pow . sr of lti and the environment of sin. "Guilt makes the sinner deserving ot the natural consequences of sir, . 1 "It J not the. fear f wrevtli that makes th inner fear God It J the consciousness tnat God 1 a Just God that makes the alnner fear Him. It ha not the fear of Dower that makes ttoei sinner fear, God. bat H Is the cotieciousnes of God's Justice that matnes the sinner fear Him. ".3uilt drives the sinner away from Godr: It blinds the sinner to the love of Gd and to him God is only a God of justice. Guilt drives the, sinner more and more Into the slavery of sin. Grilt destroys all restraints to sin; It destroys self respect, shame .and fear of public opinion, which are the only ri stratnts to sin. "The effect of sin on conscience is two-foltl: 1. It deadens the conscience to sin. - 2. It awakes the conscience to the awfulness of sin, which is far worse. Oft repeated Indulgence in sin produce deadneso-to Its danger: each commission of sin makes the next eas ier. There Is finally, however, an awakening; to the danger of sin, -and the awakening is worse than the dead ening. The awakening will come, ft not here, it will come hereafter. "Thei power of sin is poisonous, by fascination, sg)d It is corrupting. It corrupt! the mjnd. the feeling, the con science. And the will. Sin Is seen also in the power of habit. Habit Is power ful even when not sinful, and when sinful it holds man to evil. "Again, sin gathers to Itself the as sociations and influences of lis own kind. Bin binds man in hopeless sla very. "If all this be true, you ask why this world Is not a (hell? Because it is the theatre of redemption. Because Christ is here, the Bible Is here, and the gospel is here. Imagine, If you can, a world where none of these help ful agents are present Imagine God letting a soul alone and you have the picture of a state worse than literal hell. "Blessed fcy God, Christ breaks the bondage of din. Guilt makes the sin ner deserving of the natural conse quences of stin, but Jesus frees him from this takes It away. "Guilt hides the love of God, but Jesus tells of His love. He reveals to us a God whoBe own hoaom ia the refuge from deserved punishment. "When the sinner looks to God for help. God takes him to the foot of the cross to look upon H3m who was made a curse, for us, upon Him who became sin for us to save us from sin and Its power t'o save us fiim bearing the burden of sjln. As the sinner looks, he enters Intfci Christ and dies to sin; he goes Into" the tomb, and comes forlh a free inan; there is no condem nation for him in Christ Jesus. "There come then to the sinner peace of conscience, and the burden of sin, i-pmorse and corruption, are taken away. "The llfe-gtvtng, life-restoring blood of Jesus enters the sinner's veins and drives out the blood of sin, and be comes the sinner's life. "Jesus Christ ii the life breaks the power of any sinful habit, the habit of drunkenness, drugs, licentiousness, or any other habit. There is in the human soul a powipr that absolutely dominates the body, but In order to do this, there must be the motive, the power, and the fafth there. We do not preach the power of our religion enough. Mn can overcome any habit thotugh this power. "Yes, Jenuf saves from nil the pow er of sin. Take His promises In faith and overcome through Him. You may have i millets after you trust Him, but from the day you transfer your allegiances from sin to Jesus you are free. 1 ou may have to fight, yes, but on the l,ord's side. "The testimony of the Christians of all ages tells y-rru that if you are free lit Ohlrst you are free Indeed. "Will you longer serve the usurper of Jesus? Will you not renounce sin. and accept Christ; for your own sake, for God's sake, I beg you to be free. I beg you to come, simply saying, " 'Out of my bondage, sorrow and night Jesus, I come, Jesus. I (Ome, Into thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus I come to thee.' " BY MGHTXING IX IMJLPIT. Preacher Killed While Atldrosxlnc Ills Congregation, Church Taking 1'lrc. Carson. Iowa. March 25.
