MARCH 2. . srtoiUD -f nctxK von raor. rdajr, none of the men employed in the High Point furniture or other fac tories who belong to anr of the various unions -which av been organised there recently' will be retained after this week. In other words, all union men who wish to hold their positions must withdraw from the organisations to which they belong before Monday next This action on the part of the High Point manufacturers Is doubtless considered necessary for the preserva tlon of peace In the Industrial life of the community. It was only recently that the organizers of various and sun dry unions appeared upon the scene and H is stated that so far about one fourth of the workmen have been se cured as members of the unions. The High Point Enterprise says of the conditions which have heretofore pre' vailed there: "For fifteen years in High Point the factory owner ami employes have pulled together and both have prospered. In un deniable proof of this many of the fac t'iry employes and office boys of years ago are now owners of and stockholders In many of the plants, and others have erected homes for their families. There Is no town on earth where under proper conditions the employer and employe can get as close lo each other as in High Point. A man who shows any Inclination at all to br-tter his condition lias been able i to get :,11 the help desired. The history I of the business Interests hero bears this out." I This Is the very condition which the outside organizers desire to break up. The idea of a mechanic becoming a stoi kholdr-r or proprietor of an estab lishment ilocsn't suit them at all; they are for organization first and perpet ual agitation afterward until their game ceases to bring them in the usual j fees ami pickings and then they are i off for pastures new. ";" ;;. .. - , " Special to The Observer. s Ashevlile, March 28. The movement to Induce Swedish immigrants to come I to Ashevlile and this Immediate vicinity is meeting with pronounced success. Rev. Mr. C. P. Edlund, local represen tative of the Swedish immigration movement, who has been here for the paet few, weeks, is greatly pleased with this section and Is convinced that Ashe vlile and the surrounding country is admirably suited to the Swedish peo, pie. Mr. Edlund will leave for New York next week, where he goes to per sonally conduct to Ashevlile the first of the Swedish immigrants. He will be accompanied here by 25 or 30 Swedes, who come to take places al ready secured for them. This advance guard of the Swedish movement will be taken care of in the best style pos sible. Permanent places have been se cured for them on a salary basis and the Immigrants will have nothing to risk In coming here. 'It was istated this morning that places already exist for fully 200 Swedes in and around Ashevlile and that, with the inauguration of the Im migrant movement next week, the Swedes will continue to be brought to Ashevlile to fill the places that await them and also to become agriculturists. It Is understood that Mr. Vanderbllt is desirous of securing a number of the Swedes for tha Hilt more estate. The Hans Rees tannery is anxious to take a number of the Immigrants while applications from farmers and dairy men for Swedish servants are being received almost dally. A letter has been received here from prominent native of Sweden in CHIEFS. T ffi which It is stated that Swedish Immi grants to America will be directed to Ashevlile and western North Carolina and that Asheville will secure many Immigrants direct from their native land. The Swedes make the best ser vants obtainable. They are also a great agricultural people ami the pur pose of the movement is to lot'ate the immigrants as both servants and til lers of the soil. They are hard work ers. I hev understand farming ami truck raising and are experienced In all lines of agriculture. Those who have taken a conspicuous part in the movement are greatly encouraged over the prospect of colonizing the Swedes In and around Asheville and believe that the servant problem, In so far as this section Is roncerned, bids fair to be settled. Letters have been received recently from a number of Southern Hies inquiring the met bods employed by Asheville in obtaining Swedish im migrants. sritVKYINW THOMiKY LINKS. 11 has ue t in- !
