New York, March SR-Pilces recovered strongly . from the weakness with whfog to-day's stock market opened and which m oinfA In th tnm Af nnu of the COHI- era. in- which nomine losses ran from 'i to S points. The anthracite carriers were most affected, as to which the announce ment from Indianapolis of orders to sus- pena mining tn tne antnracue region uu Monday came as something of a surprise. The rup'ture of relations in the soft coal Trade was quite fully expected and it a doubtful If the action taken there had much effect on the opening break in prices. In fact, the recovery in the mar. set was attended by professions of confi dence that the soft coel strike would prove short-lived owing to the divided sentiment uniong the operations. Coupled with the depressing influence of the strike news was the early rise in , the call loan rate, to 8 per cent, and above, arousing fears that the rate mlKlit go much higher before the close of the day. As the day progressed, however, the call loan rate showed a tendency to recede and this was a notable Influence towards the recovery. Ioana made to-day at the stock exchange carry over until Monday. Hay ward, V'lck - A Clark's Cotton Letter. Furnished by the Cotton Exchange and Ilourd of Trade. New Orleans. March 9. Conflicting opinion made cotton rather a dangerous thing to play with to-day. The chief fea tures were extremely bullish but senti ment around the ring was plainly against an advance. Dig people looked with real or affected Indifference at all the selling and made no open attempt to, advance prices. All the same, toward noon the market showed steadiness and advanced materially from the levels to which It had been put by the general selling of the earlier hours. ,The feature of the day was the correc tion In the stock of cotton at Bremen which decreased It by 104.000 bale of American and Increasod it by 1.000 bales of other kinds, making a net decrease of 10(1.000 bale. Students of the market Im mediately recognised that this correction would make a very bullish visible supply statement and would cause spinners' tak ing to compare more favorably with taking hint year than they have In the riant have, not been larger. Some well formed cotton men predict that more corrections of stocks fit Kuropean points will follow. The returning of stocks nt a higher figure than they actually are Ik certainly a very handy and effective method of keeping down spinners' takings and Kuropean consumers seem fond of nicking use of II. An old time cotton man nick ne use or II An old t me cotton man to day recalled that once before, ten or! twelve years ago, Bremen was farced to nuike a "correction" of about 100,1)00 bales in lis slock. Bullish its the day's correc tlon was. however, It had no market value. When It wus officially announced the ring Jutned on prices with both feet. New York said that this sudden hurst of beiirishrieMS was due "to the undermining of confidence In the market by the d -chirtng of the coal strike." Private ad vices early In the day said that the strike was actually on. The weather was nothing for the hears to brag of. as Ihe map showed scattered rains over a great portion of the belt, while the forecast promised more rain for the Atluntlcs; fulr weather was predicted for the western belt, which undoubtedly tempted some short selling.
