Nordic Concere on bale Doings of a Day at Howan's CapltaL Special to The Observer. Salisbury, March 8. The report In this morning's papers relative to tbe rich ore discovered at Gold, Hill, was news that half tells the opulence of that region. It Is a gold vein, that now engages the attention of the- ex perts and they are thoroughly Jubilant. President Newman, of the Gold Hill Copper Company, la so much peaeed that he will not talk for once. The mines of Gold Hill have turned out several millions in their time but few yields have been so rich as this one, which now Is giving gold ore worth $1,000 a ton. The Southern Bell Telephone Com pany will shortly have completed a through long distance line from Salls ibury to Statesvllle, the first direct communication that these two town have had. The name company will alse install a complete local exchange at Cleveland, half way between these places. This Is to be done by the first of May. It Is a fine tribute to the industry of E. C. Land, a Greens boro boy who has wrought ao well with the Salisbury branch. When the North Carolina Midland was projected through Cleveland neighborhood " that funeral oration was prepared. But It never has been used end Cleveland has a bank, veneering mill, a large flour ing, mill and number of smaller enter prises. Whitehead Kluttz, who spoke there yesterday, explained the situa tion when he said: "If any man, standing in Salisbury, had said 12 years ago that, within 12 years, we would be riding to Spencer, a new town of 6,000 people. In street cars built In High Point, he would have been put down as foolish and a sor ry phophet." It is this universal growth that has kept Cleveland alive and is but the beginning of the un paralleled development in which the Whitney water-power will play a leading part. I The tickets for Norclda's concert in Salisbury weie put on sale this morn ing. The comingr of the great singer Is assured, provided the people want her and will pay the price to guaran- i tee her visit. The sale of tickets now Is purely tentative, if purchasers turn i out In sufficient number by Saturday, i April i, to warrant the belief that Norclda will draw as Bernhardt i then there will be no further question as to the date which ban been set for Saturday night. May 26. Persons wishing to communicate with the the atrical management relative to N'or dfca. will address T. B. Marsh, man ager of Meroney's Theatre, or Miss Lena R. Meroney, Salisbury, N. C. Little Hinri Has a Narrow Escape From Punishment A Tiger Bound Over Other Cases. The leading role in the recorder's show yesterday morning was taken by Henry Cornwell, better known by the nom de plume -of Little Hinri. Little Hinri has been off the gang for sev eral weeks nbw and there was no sur prise at his appearance before the city's tribunal yeateiday morning. The defendant had made himself too fa miliar In the office of Col. T. LeRoy Kirkpntrick. at the Piedmont building, and had been making himself some thing of a nuisance on the streets Little Hinri never fails to elict sym pathy on account of the absence of one leg and his youthfuiness, but' it must be confessed that the little fellow is an inveterate thief and a plague. The recorder was merciful yesterday morning and allowed Hinri to go, after delivering a lecture for his benefit. Another blind tiger was arraiged yesterday morning, he being the first in a week or more. The victim was John Slmonton. SImonton was bound vore to the Superior Court and re quired to give a bond of $200 for his appearance there. George Rivers and Grantham Wil liams were charged with a deadly af fray, the offense having been commit ted two or three months ago. Cause was found against both and both were sent to Jail in default of the bond re quired for their appearance at the Su perior Court. Sandy Thompson, a negro haekman. was fined the costs for driving in a morrow. The self-made man is usually an easy mark for the machine-made politician. .11 U WAJLK EASY 20 SONG HITS and I'NIQl'E DANCES IMC Pffil Of All HUSiai COKfDIES SPICE ' , , i-T.V CASHIEU RESIGNS. Mr. J.
