The market has not been particularly active the past week but there have been frequent die plays of strength In the new crop he nonthst which seem to be gaining in DODularlty. The general oisposmon naa been In aunnort them and they are un doubtedly becoming attractive. The bull bull clique have again been showing their hands. Dut nave Deen maaina no vry emphatic demonstrations. The general list advanced or declined, according to the doings in May, the outcome of which la uncertain. We heard of the probabil ity of there being tendered an lmmenae amount amount of May at the proper time, but bulls profess no concern and believe that the cllaue nave the situa tion well In hand anp that the climax of the May deal win leave tne general mar ket none the weaker. Outside interest in the market has not materially broad ened but the situation Is a vicious one In that many bears are talking of a prob able Improvement In the market and shorts have been very careful to protect themselves from day to day. Liverpool Js doing a good spot business end follow our market and Manchester reports at the close of the week are cheerful. Weather conditions in the South are far from excellent and unsettled con dltlons in many dlatrlcts Drove amrnunl tlon for bulling. The approach of the Kaster holiday seem to attract buyers and the orobabll ties are that the mar ket will hold Its own the coming week and possibly do better especially for the new crop month. The only noteworthy news feature outside the weather was the Isnfie of a report of the splnnora' confederation of Great Britain, showing shout 1.600,000 stocks at mills, as against 600,000 less than last year. The general run of reports in reference to the acreage indicate some Increase but rather lexs than was some time ago considered prob able. President Taylor of the National dinners' Association stating that there will be no Increase except 6 per cent. In west Texas and 10 per cent. In Oklahoma. Liverpool is due to come unchanged on Monday. - miuuiuh At vas. Hayward, Vlck Jt Clark' Cotton Letter. Furnished by the Cotton Exchange and Board or Trade. New Orleans. La.. April 7. Extremely bullish week-end figures and about the strongest literature yet issued from the bull cumn In New York resulted In a rise of 16 points in the local cotton market this morning. This advance at the end of a bull week was surprising, us liquida tion by timid longs who would not care to carry their commitments over hum day might naturally be expected. As It was. lonss for the most part seemed to bo satlstied to sit on their purchases lor a further rise, it was cabled from Liverpool that the bull leader In New lork Had published a very Dullish cir cular in the morning papers ther which, together with the visible supply state ment, naa caused tne Liverpool luture market to close at an advance of 4 and 6 points when It should have gone Into a decline or 3 and 4 to have met the fluc tuations In this market yesterday after noon. 3'legrams from New York said that this circular would be- publish ed in the New York papers eith er Sunday or Monday morning and the anticipation of Its effect probably had much to do with lessening week end profit-taking and with creating fresh buying. Tito weather mup also stimulat ed buying, for It showed unsettled weath er over the western cotton belt and an area of low pressure that Indicated a severe storm just to the west of the cotton region. This storm will undoubt edly sweep the belt over Sunday and according to the popular belief will fur ther retard crop preparations. Just so long as unfavorable weather keeps up tne bears have no strong argument to uso and they will be unable to do much against such mill takings as were re rmrted for the week last night 261,000 bales- especially when coupled with the skillful manipulation practiced by the New York bull crowd. Snots were In very good demund. One export house bought a lot of 1,000 bales In the early hours, but. for the most part, trading was In small parcels. Prices were firm and 1-18 higher. C. P. Kill A Co.' Cotton Letter. Special to Tbo Observer. New Orleans, La., April 7.-Inteud of declining in response to the weakness shown by American markets yesterday, l .lv,mMlt M f I v n ,1 1 . o.l fiii. ru 1 1 . . , .... ...... i and futures closed at a gain of four to live points over yesterday's figures. !s Tho I cables attribute this Dart I v to the imhll. cution In a Liverpool paper to-dny of a very bullish circular from Theo. H l'rli-e. But In our opinion the weekly fig ures or me visiois supply ana spinners Ijikliin" announced afier the close last evening were in the main responsible for i iic mrengin. lleur scalpers who sold yesterday have been prominent among the buyers to day, Hiid the prices are to to 12 points higher. Th extent of the takings by spinners at these comparatively high prices Is Die best proof that the rosiest reports of the condition of trade arc not exaggerated and it Is pur belief that In dividual circulars will not be required to Infuse strength hereafter. The publica tion of the weekly figures from now on will constitute more stimulating circulars than expressions of opinion by Interested firms or Individuals and unless or until prices shall have been driven to a point that will check or diminish the current consumption tho poBTllon of cotton will continue to strengthen rapidly, and radi cally, hence we would discourage opera, tlons on the short side. Good weather and good crop prospects may eterclae a restraining Influence upon speculative buyers, but Oicy cannot prevent the de velopment of an acutely strong situation before uppllc from the new crop be come available. C. P. ELLIS A CO. Uubtmrd Bros. A Co.'s Cotton Letter. Special to The Observer. , New York, April 7. Tt appeared to ne another day of realisation on the advices from Liverpool which were much better than were generally expected by the trade. There seemed to be a large nuan Hiy w and iulys to buy. The difference opened at six points and at the close was only about thrse to four points premium on May. The, orders In the hands of the commission houses were few In number snd there seemed to be very little disposition on the part of out sider to Invest either way.
