ELECTING A MODERATOR Tha election of a moderator for this session of the Assembly was taken up and match Interest was shown In the nominations and election. Mr. O. W, Bull made the first nomination, his . nominee being Hon. Allen G. Hall : ' of Nashville. Tenn. Mr. Hall is dean r ot the law department of Vanderbllt ' ' Vnlverslty. and Mr. Bull mads - - strong plea In favor of the election ' of a ruling elder Instead of a minister . as moderator of this Assembly. He referred to the fact that only ones In the history of the Mouthern Presby terian Church haa a layman occupied the moderator's chair. Ha referrod also to the Important questions to be considered and settled at this session, ' and urged tha election of Mr. Hall upon this ground also. Rev. J. w. tttagg nominated -Rev, J. W. Bachman. Rev. T. H. Rica nominated Rev. Josephus Johnston. Rev. A. J. McKelway nominated Jtev. J, w. Htagg. Rev. J. H. Thorn well -nominated Hon. B. H. Young, and Rev. E. M. Green nominated Rev. w. c. Hoggs. NAME OF MR. JOHNSTON WITH DRAWN. The name of Rev. Josephus John ston waa withdrawn In rnmpllan lth his request, his reason being that I) ss on the committee of Inveatlaa. tion in the case of Rav. William Cald well. a The ballot was taken by single vole in snswrr to tn calling of the roll. on the firm ballot no election waa ef fected. and ki motion of Rev. J. H. Howertun tha Assembly voted to drop tne name or trie two candidates re celvlng the lowest number of vote, provided the aggregate was equal to the number of vote received by tha candidate receiving the next highest number. The aggregate was not rrarhed'up on the first ballot, and only tha nam of Rev. J. W. Ptagg was dropped The motion further recommended that the name receiving the fewest vote be dropped sfter esch ballot. and thla motion was carried untl soma candidate 'received sufficient votes to declare an election. HON. ALLKN O. HALL CHOSEN Five ballots were cast before tha moderator waa elected, and tha ona elected was Hon. Allen O. Hall. Mr. Hall wsa conducted to tha modera tor chair by Mr. O. W. Hull and Rev. (I. H. Htrlckler and Dr. Plunkdt congratulated htm and the Assembly upon nis election to tnis position, after which he delivered to him the gavel. Mr. Hall expressed his appreciation t the confidence shown In him by the Assembly, snd asked that the A. eernbly glv him the support of pray ers. Tha Assembly adjourned at 2:4S o'clock to meet again at 4 o'clock. G la via. one of the propriatora, was Instantly killed and his brother, Ed- ward C. Olavin. the other proprie tor of Olavin Bros. Machine Shops, at Front' and Hanover street, was seri ously Injured by the explosion of a fHston head which they wera heat ing In the forge of the works to be repaired for ha Angola Lumber com pany to-day, a few minutes before noon. The explosion waa eitner caused by the generation of steam from water Inadvertently left In tho hollow of the piston head or from an accumulation of oil that had trick- lea into tne opening aunng coniinueu use. The explosion was or consld- ersble violence, the head of tha pis ton being torn asunder and sent fly ing in every direction, tho fire from he forge being also scattered over the plsce. Mr, Dsn Olavin. who was killed, was banding over the forge turning the pie of Iron to obtain a white heat, when the exposition came. 'A half piece or th heavy iron .rrom tha piston head struck him on the chin and. tearing off tha entire, left aid of tha face and ear, threw him serosa an anvil nearby; breaking his neck, right arm and left collar bone, Another fragment of the Iron struck him Immediately In the forehead, breaking tha skull and leaving an ugly 'Wound, which In Itself would hava killed him Instantly. Th brother, Mr. Kd Olavin, wa standing three or four feet away and waa blinded and severely burned about the faee and breast by the hot em bers, ashes and stesm from the forge. It Is doOhtful If his eyesight csn be restored, though the hope Is express ed thst he will recover front the burns. He Is now In the hospital and s being given the best of attention. The flying embers set fire- to the shop, a iart of tha wreckage from tha forge tearing through the roof, but he (lames were soon extinguished by he fire department, which responded o an slsrm, The young men wers hard-working machinists of the best class and had stsbllshed their shops here out of savings accumulated during years of service at their trade, The accident atiseii widespread sorrow among friends of the young men, who wers very popular.
