BeverAl thousand people witnessed the fire works display at tha foot of East Mooreihead street Isst night. carrlsces. baigeJe. automobiles, war on, bralops. and all other sorts of moving snd creeping things. Includ Ing several hundred pstnted Red Men on horsebss-k, were Jumbled together In one seenhlng mass, sll looking at the biggest fire works exhibition ever given in tree State. There were no electric l!shs nearer than th graded school corner and darknesa hung over the crowd like a blanket. Only the white dnesses of some of the vouna ladles could be seen. When the Are works were set off, the scene wa brilliantly lighted. Multi-colored candles snd rockets. whlril-gigs, spitting devils snd every other con ceivable kind of Illumination waa fired, much to the delight of the crowd. In a word, th exhibition was a signal success, snd In keep ing with the other features of the celt-brstlon. RED MEN'S PARADE. One of the most spectscular fea ture of the celnbratlons yesterday wa the parade of the Red Men, at :I0 o'clock last night. There were nearly 200 members of th order In line, about half mounted and the oth er walking. Among the parader were many visiting brave, from Concord. Salisbury, Oastonla and Wilmington. They marched In single file, Indian style, and with their Indian coatumes. war-paint, feathers and torches, made a most unique picture, rne line was more than half a mile long and the streets, wtth the thousand of specta tor, were brilliantly and beautifully lighted by the red fire. The Red Men line wa in charge of Capt. J. Jt. Anderon, chief mar shal, and Messrs. W. F. Mlllersham. P. B. Mulligan and w. f. Kobortson, assistant manorial. A body of scouts, consisting of the following named braves, rraarched In advance of the main body of warriors: Messrs. J. N. Watson. O. W. Hcsrtt. E. G. Orshsm. H. N. Dunks, J. W. Donahan and C. K. Kennnji. The line of march was as follows: Scouts. TfUrd Regiment Band, mount ed braves. Charlotte Drum snd Bugle Corp, dismounted brave. Durham, May IS. There .was a wreck on the Norfolk A Western road last night, ths particulars of which wer brought here when the Norfolk A Western passenger train reached her' near midnight, being nearly three hour Iste. The train was local freight No. 71. coming to this city from Lynchburg. Ths snglne and six csrs went on the ground st a point near Helena, Per on county. On of the cars was mashed Into kindling wood and about ISO yards of track torn up. Ths train from here to Lynchburg and the one coming this wsy had to transfer passengers, bsggage, mall and express at the scene of the wreck, Fireman Ewers, who wa on th wrecked train, waa ths only man hurt. He received a sprained ankle In Jumping, snd a bad cut on ths Ids of his fsce. His wounds are not of a serious nature. Just whst caused the wreck could not be learned. The train was round- ng a curve when the engine left the track and wa followed by six of he cars, the track being badly torn up. Elliott Rouse, a negro, sunk sn axe In his wife's head, killing her Instantly. He first grated her skull snd when she turned to run, he drove the weapon up to the eye. The killing grew out of the refusal of the woman to re urn to her home, she having left her husband on Hccnunt of alleged brutal treatment.
