Columbia Hanker Will Tell Investi gating Committee That He Is Sorry He Cumw-il Not Likely That llo Will he Kent to Jail. Observer Uureau, 120 Main street. Columlba. H. C. June 2. It Is practically certain that W. O. ChlldH, the railroad and bank presi dent, who eloctrlfleii the town yes terday and through the newspapers the Ktste generally, by positively and most emphatically declining to he pushed Into repeating jokes he had heard about dispensary rcbate-tnklng. will not iro to Jail for contempt for either declining to answer questions or using various and sundry cuss words to make his declination emphat ic anil vigorous. The eruption "f Mr William D. Chllds caused scat trratlon of the antl-dlspensary peo ple and a hearty laugh on the purl of the other hide. Ijtsl week the at tack on Mr Lyon hy Major Hlaek i generally and severely condemned, but this time the position of Mr. Chllds Is genera lly endorsed and he Is the hero of the hour. The prediction Is that the Chllds Incident will end Tuesday by an apology from him, the committee declining to hack up Mr Lyon In his efforts to force Mr. Chllds to repent the stories he says It Is unjust to repent "I think I will go down Tues day," said Mr. Chllds to a friend to day, "and tell thai committee that I am sorry 1 cussed before them, for as a matter of fact I did not Intend any disrespect. I was mad and cuss ed before 1 thought." When those standing shout laughed. Mr. Chllds explained that he would not swear again, hut that the cuss word he had Ji.st used wus for the sake of the ensy conversation of the moment "Hut If they make me mad asaln I guess I'll uss again," he added In a reflective mood, a bit sad at the Idea that he inlKht explode again without think ing "It won't surprise us 11 hit," said one of his friends. "Are you going to Jit 1 1 If the com mittee Insists on your repenting Vhose Jokes about rebates'.'" asked another friend. "I certainly will before 1 will re peat them. I have already had half II dor.en lawyers tn volunteer their sirvlces to defend me, I don't think the courts will force me to do whnt Is wrong, and I really do not think the committee will go that far." The understanding Is that the com mittee will only require an apology from Mr. Chllds for his so-called dis orderly conduct In the presence of the committee. The summons In Mr. Chllds says nothing about his declln li.g to repent the Jokes. It notifies him "to show cause why you should not be attached for contempt of the committee in being guilty of disorder ly condui t and contempt In tha pres ence of the rommlttee." AMUSBIENTS Vivid are the scenes that are thrown on the screen during the so called moving pictures of Han Fran cisco's horror which have hitherto been offered and which could not pos sibly be genuine for the very good reason that the makers were this side of the Rocky Mountains while the fire was raging. With the Miles pic tures, which will be at the Academy for three nights, commencing Monday, It Is different and the management la willing to forfeit the gross receipts of a performance to anyone who can prove that the pictures were not genuine. Tha list Includes almost every locality that has been featured In the newspapers, Including the business portion of the city and the handsome residential section along Van Ness avenue. Many of the later were taken when dynamite was being used to arrest the progress of the de stroying flames. Two views which will be particularly Interesting are of Market street, looking towards the now famous ferry house taken four days before the earthquake, the other while the flames were ravaging the city. They we,re taken on the back of a. trolley car, the last, by the way, to traverse the famous thoroughfare until the present time.
