In defiance f the order of the Senate committee en Inter-oceanlc canals that he an swer oertaln questions propounded to him In the Investigation of Isthmian canal affairs. William Nelson Crom well repeated his refusals to-day. He stated that the questions Involved confidential relations with his client, the New Panama Canal Co. The ques tions were read to him by Senator Morgan and when the first one was asked, which concerned the first work be did for the Panama Canal Company In America the witness calmly took from his pocket a pre pared statement which he proceeded te read. He stated that his knowledge of the subject under discussion was derived In the course of his profes sional employment and that he must decline t disclose the Interests of his employer concerning any private busi ness matters. In refusing he said he did so with the profoundest respect for the committee. After going over the previous rec ord at some length In order to give the witness another opportunity to answer the committee adjourned un til neat Tuesday, without having con cluded the record. The general Im pression Is that the question of Mr. Cromwell's recalcitrancy will not be concluded by the committee In time to certify the case to the courts dur ing this session of Congress, In the event It Is decided to carry the case that far. Oregg Cham bers, of the Reems Creek section of Buncombe county, had a narrow es cape from death Saturday afternoon hlle fishing along the banks or Reems creek. Mr. Chambers had gone a-ftahlng up the creek during the af ternoon when a heavy rain came up. After the shower the fisherman con tinued the sport of landing the speck led beauties. He was sitting on the bank of the stream some ten feet from a large tree. There was a vivid flash of lightning and Mr. Cham bers was rendered unconscious. He regained consciousness after a lapse of some time and, though daxed from the effects of the stroke, made hia way to the home of Jim 'Ray, not far distant. Upon Investigation It was found that the lightning had struck the tree near where Mr. Chambers was Ashing and, glancing off, had shocked the fisherman Into uncon sciousness. The tree was. badly torn by the lightning and It Ir considered miracle . how he escaped mutant death. Mr. Chambers feels no ill ef fect from his experience. He was not burned by the lightning. The Vogemann offices here will be closed at once, and E. Jt. J. Wlgge, agent for Harber A Co., will bo the Norfolk agent for the new company. The Havannnh offleea of the Voge mann line will be retained, and will be made the principal Southern offi ces of the combined Interests. Growing out of charges preferred against mm in opposing his election to the police force at last night's meeting of the bosrd of aldermen, former Policeman M. E. Ouy this morning made an at tack on Alderman E. F. Johnson near the place of business of the latter on Dock street. A risitcurt enaueu in which the ex-pollceman's eye was blackened and the alderman vest and shirt suffered to some extent Friends of the two men Interfered before the final result of the affray was apparent. The affair caused a sensation In local municipal circles, as both men are well known. Alder man Johnson submitted to a down town magistrate and Guy gave him self up to the chief of police.
