Uth and 12Ut of July. Thla la tha third annual meeting and tha indication are that It will surpass all others in attendance. Tha session are to be held In the Pullen build ing, at the A. M. College, an Ideal place for euch a gathering. Tha convention la to ba a joint meeting -of several organisations. T namely, "IB "Worth -Carolina- Dairy mans Association, the North Caro--Una -Farmers' : Protective. Association and the- North Carolina division of the Southern Cotton, Association. In addition to these Urge organisations, . a meeting of the farmers' Institute ' committee Will be held for consulta tion as to tha best methods of in atltute, work. Tha woman's depart ment of the .convention will be In L charge of -Mrs. F. U Steven. . A number of experts will ba pres ent at the convention. Three special ists from tha Department of Agrt ' culture la Washington will be on hand to assist those who have charge of tha meeting. The programme for the morning and afternaon were carried out In an Instructive and In spiring manner. The colored minister of th city are regular In attendance and are lending their Influence to th meeting. . There was some disappointment on account of th nonappearance of Prof. Charles U Coon at the meeting In the evening. It was due to a mis understanding of dates, a fact which was not observed until yesterday at a late- hour. This, however, will not deprive the association of the priv ilege af hearing Prof. Coon aa ar rangements were made to have his address at I:t0 to-night. Prof. J. H. M. Butler, formerly of the colored A. A ,M. College, at Oreensboro, but who of late year ha been one of th few colored teacher under the government in the Philip pines, favorsd the association with a graphic account of his life and exper ience as a teacher In that far away part of the world. A previously Intimated the associa tion was offilclally welcomed to the city and community last night by Mayor McNInch through Mr. John A. McKae. of the Charlotte bar. Mr. Mc Kae was Introduced by Dr. Sander. The speaker referred to the occasion of his being present a an evidence of the mutual good will between the races In this community. Ha then gave some excellent advice to teacher. , He closed with remark complimen tary to Kiddle UnlveYslty and aald that the white people of thla region are proud of Blddle University and Its One work. The speaker waa heart ily applauded. Prof. Alexander Graham, of the Charlotte graded, schools, waa pres ent. He kindly responded to a call and made a brief, but telling addrsess suited to encourage the teacher In their great work. Ha, has great confi dence In the educational future of the colored race. Prof. Charlea L. Coon aent a long distance message to the effect that he would be on hand for his addreea In connection with the educational ral ly to-night. Farmer and cotton seed oil men are watching with Interest tne outcome of an Important meeting held In Co lumbia on Tuesday, at which war present th leading cotton seed oil mill managers of the State. Th object of th conference waa a dis cussion of the practicability of manu facturing denatured alcohol from th potato, which can be done it la claim ed by using the same kind of me- c hlnery employed In the cotton seod oil Industry. Persons familiar with recent event ntall that after next May the gov ernment will remove the tax from denatured alcohol, which will enable the product to be sold at a low price. At It happens, potatoes are at certain seasons more In quantity than in de mand and are fully matured at the time when the oil mills close down for the season. It can readily be seen that th product can be manu factured very cheaply and finding a ready demand there I a great possi bility In the business, meaning a profit to the mill men and tha farm ers a well. It was discover ed to-day that hack saws had been lipped into tha county Jail and that several prisoner Were sawing , their way out to liberty. Th matter waa tipped off to tha Jailer and he found the saws in use, and made change Just In time to prevent a Jail delivery. B mid-night to-night tha prisoner at work would have sawed their way out.. Hodges, the wife-murderer, under sentence . of death; Freeman Jones, charged with burglary and attempt at criminal as sault, and C. A. Peters, charged with criminally assaulting hi daughter. Hanson, on of th best known teachers of this county, was elected principal of that institution. Prof. Hsnson has been principal of the Ob server school.
