In the two years ending September I, i8q8, 22,500,000 bales of mtton were produced and marketed at an average price of b'i cents. This increase in price is an aggregate of about $550,000,000, and is very largely the work of the Southern Cotton Association. In com parison with Mich an achievement the cost of maintaining its organiza tion is but infinitesimal, and it enters upon the coming cotton season with the greatest confidence in the ultimate realization of its purpose, ' namely : fair prices for the product of over-production of cotton ; and i C.aA-PWtn nrivilece of furnishinc Cod-given privilege of furnishing ing ever known at prices which will repay the Southern farmers for tlicir arduous toil anj tin trained intelligence employed in pro ducing it. The Southern Cotton Association has made its mistakes and has had its enemies to fight. The mistakes have not, however, been im portant, as shown by the result, and its enemies have for the most p.irt admitted its power and have been forced ultimately to align themselves with its purposes. The it nf September, HjoCt, will find the world absolutely bare of (i.ttnii. The visible supply will be the smallest on record. Whatever the si?e of the coming cotton crop, there is no reason why it should be sold at anything lens than the average price ob tained fur the last crop, through the efforts of the Soifthen Cotjon Association, namely 1 1)4 rents and 12 cents a pound. Interested and self-constituted authorities have of late been endeavoring to stampede Southern holders and producers of cotton into the belief that the coining crop ai likely to be an abnormally large one, pro duced from an acreage very much in excess of any previously planted. This disposition seems to have penetrated even into the Crop Intimating Hoard nf the I'nited States (io eminent, who ap patently have not as yet fully emancipated themselves from the 111.1l.uln.it lnllueiites which resulted in the scandal which the efforts ,ii the Suutheiti Cotton Association last vear disclosed.
