Suppose so ciety should sanction lynching as It aancUona trial by Jury, what nee-would we have that the totally Innocent would never be lynched T A aeldom aa lynching occurs now, the newspapera report that nn Innocent man waa lynched In Louisiana only a few daya ago. And what HHHuranee would we have that unscrupulous men would not employ thijt mean to satisfy trivial wrongs? , . - la tht cae of bo brutal a murder aa occurred at Barbers Junction a ' m daya ago. In which at least ene of the murderera la known, would not , lynching be Justifiable! It would be Justifiable, If there were no other raeana of getting rid of thi- murderer. ' It ta complained that the law la too uncertain and alow. The law la very "rarely, If ever, uncertain In casi-a against negroes where the evidence la aofflclent to Justify a lynching. And tt th energy pent In lym-hlnga were tMiit In demanding the Immediate trial and eiecutlon of the murderer, thera would be no "delay f the law." However, we admit that. In this caaa, no great harm would be done If the law were Ignored and the mur derer lynched, provided thl lynching -would n3 taken aa a precedent to justify other leaa Justifiable lynching and other lawlcanes. The prece dent could not e dangerous If all of aoctety were thoroughly Imbued with a aense of JuMlce and love f-r peace. But there l a clans In every community that seize on every op- , portunlty and pretext to do violent deads. The security of our homes re- qulrea that tnis ciass ie cuwumru In Ita lawlessness. ine prscu-e m lynching encourages It to a fearful ex tant. But many sincere people believe that the negro must be shown em phatically that his crimes will no be tolerated, and they believe lynching rauat be employed for thla purpose. It la certainly true that the negro must be taught that we will not en dure hla crimes. But lynching ne ffroea ao arouses their spirit of re venge that they overlook the lesson the lynchers would teach them. The negroes are Ignorant and wo fully lacking In common sense. They believe they are unjustly treated by their white superiors; and. of course, they are In some instances If we will examine ourselves, we will find that despite our superior Intelligence we feel much unfair prejudlcu gainst the negroes. Hearing thla In mind, we can readily ee that they, lacking knowledge and common sense no much as they do, feel even more unfair prejudice against us than we feel sKalnat them. Bo every offense and unlawful move ment against the negroes arouses their hatred for us. Kvery lynching la fuel like oil poured on the already over-heated race prejudice among the negroea. Indignant men exclaim that they Will so arouse the negro's fear that others will not dare to repeat the Crimea This argument cannot sup port the theory of lynching. Fur, In the first place, the ure and Immediate execution of the law will produce the element of fear without engendering aa much of the spirit of revenge, fVhlch counteracts the effects of the fear. And It Is well to repent thai If the energy spent In lynchiugx were siwnt In demanding an Immedliite trial and the Immediate exerutton of the Judg ment, there would t- no "delay of the law." "Hanging Is too good for him." tome say. "If we burn a few of th.-m they will stop their devilment " The torture of negro crlmlnalm will certainly-work more harm 'ban good.
